Book excerpt: After Japan entered the war, the 2/2nd had been sent to Timor and following the Japanese occupation of the island in February, had been conducting a guerrilla war using 'hit and run' tactics. The 2/4th continued this guerrilla war and from September carried out many successful ambushes, blew bridges and roads, and manned two observation posts in the mountains outside Dili where they reported the movements of Japanese ships and aircraft. However, during the last few months of 1942, the Japanese had intensified their efforts to end such resistance and they made the situation untenable for the Australians. In mid-December the 2/2nd was evacuated from Timor to Darwin, as was the 2/4th in January 1943.
Book Synopsis The First Commandos by : Ralph Coyne
Download or read book The First Commandos written by Ralph Coyne and published by Petaurus Press. This book was released on 2009-12-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time they were extremely secret. Still little known, Australia’s first commandos were repeatedly put in dangerous situations to achieve results disproportionate to their small numbers. Their story is historically important, for these few hundred men possibly changed the course of Australia’s history. Establishing commando units was a bold and dangerous gamble for the Australian military authorities facing Japan’s entry into the Second World War. They did not know how commandos would be used when conventional army operations relied on large numbers of soldiers supported by heavy weapons, sometimes naval gunfire or aircraft, and comprehensive supply trains. Very quickly the commandos showed they were extremely efficient and could perform a role which exceeded the ability of forces many times their size. The 2/4 Independent Company, which included Ralph Coyne, was sent to Timor to supplement and then replace the original (2/2) company. Outnumbered nearly one hundred to one but assisted by Timorese natives, the commandos kept a Japanese force of 20,000 men fully occupied and unavailable to fight elsewhere, possibly preventing invasion of Australia and at least greatly improving the chances of stopping the Japanese advance in New Guinea. After Timor more drama followed in New Guinea and Borneo. In one terrible incident Ralph Coyne was one of only four out of forty-eight commandos left alive and uninjured. Against the odds Ralph Coyne survived to tell his fascinating tale. Sometimes humorous, tragic, horrifying, even macabre, but usually dramatic, this book records the experiences of one of Australia’s first commandos.
Download or read book The Killer Bees written by Gregory Blake and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Independent Companies and Commandos were a unique form of sub-unit within the Australian army during the Second World War. They were units composed of an exceptional group of individuals with very special attributes and skills who thrived on the unconventional and doing things very much in their own way. The army found it very hard to accept this at first but ultimately allowed the Independent Companies and Commandos to fight in their own style. They did this in the Jungles of Timor, New Guinea and Bougainville using tactics and procedures all of their own. As exponents of jungle warfare they were second to none and contributed significantly to important Australian military campaigns from 1942 until 1945. This history follows the story of some of these remarkable soldiers and units and the manner in which they fought the war against Japan at a time when Australia was engaged in a struggle for its very existence.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the Double Red Diamonds who fought the Japanese in Timor, inflicting casulties far in excess of their number, and showing the usefulness of guerrilla forces against a numerically sperior enemy. While all other forces in Asia had been destroyed by the Japanese, the Double Reds were the sole Allied unit to remain undefeated. Colin Doig, who was one of their now rapidly dwindling nubmer, and who died in 1996, said. "The object of the story will be to tell of the humour and pathos which occurred to the men who proudly wore the Double Red Diamond Colour patch through five long years of peril, and had a wonderful comradeship which only comes through day by day contact in all sorts of surroundings."

Download or read book Rangers written by Michael Julius King and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Leavenworth Paper is a critical reconstruction of World War II Ranger operations conducted at or near Djebel el Ank, Tunisia; Porto Empedocle, Sicily; Cisterna, Italy; Zerf, Germany; and Cabanatuan in the Philippines. It is not intended to be a comprehensive account of World War II Ranger operations, for such a study would have to include numerous minor actions that are too poorly documented to be studied to advantage. It is, however, representative for it examines several types of operations conducted against the troops of three enemy nations in a variety of physical and tactical environments. As such, it draws a wide range of lessons useful to combat leaders who may have to conduct such operations or be on guard against them in the future. Many factors determined the outcomes of the operations featured in this Leavenworth Paper, and of these there are four that are important enough to merit special emphasis. These are surprise, the quality of opposing forces, the success of friendly forces with which the Rangers were cooperating, and popular support.
Book Synopsis Command Of The Air by : General Giulio Douhet
Download or read book Command Of The Air written by General Giulio Douhet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.
