In German East Africa General Smuts has achieved great success at the head of troops drawn from England, India, and South Africa. Side by side the men of South Africa have fought and died, and not one of them has paused to say to his neighbour, 'are you English or Dutch?' for all alike have fought for the honour of the land in which they have a common heritage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of South Africa, Vol. 1 of 4: A History of the Origin of South African IT has been said that History unenlightened by Philosophy is no better than an Old almanac. This surely cannot man that the sirnple narration Of the events which have led to, or in themselves may have been so many steps in, the development of a country, is without value. It is sincerely hoped that this is not so, for in the present work there will be found nothing Of the nature Of a philosophical disquisition on the springs Of human con duct, or on the origin and growth Of civil society, nor any views respecting the right principles to be adopted in the formation and government of Colonies; yet it is believed that a straightforward. Unbiassed account Of the circumstances Of hardship, endurance and perseverance under which the Eastern Province took its rise and con tinned to struggle for so many years will be read with interest, and the lack Of philosophy pardoned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of South Africa The new rulers of the Cape soon found themselves at loggerheads with the colonists - not only with the old-established Dutch burghers, who naturally had no sym pathy with the regime, but also with the British settlers who were now streaming into the country. The Albany settlers of 1820, who had been accustomed in England and Scotland to relatively democratic institutions, were in no mood to submit to the dictates of autocratic governors; and, after an heroic struggle to establish themselves in the new land, many of them played an important part in a prolonged agitation for freedom of the Press and representative institutions - demands which the government was forced to concede, inch by inch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of South Africa, in the Century Every reader naturally wishes to know with what authority the book in his or her hands, if it professes to be a history, has been written. What, it is asked, were the author's sources of information? What reason is there to believe that his material has been used in a judicious manner? My sources of information are archives, in which I have been making researches for a quarter of a cen tury, many hundreds of printed volumes upon South Africa in various languages, and an intimate ao quaintance with the country and its people, Euro peans and natives. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of South Africa From the Foundation of the European Settlement to Our Own Times, 1834-1854 IT was my intention originally to keep the history of the Cape Colony and of the States founded by the emigrant farmers in separate volumes, such as those published during the last few years. But I have been compelled to change that plan. In February 1892 the whole of my completed manuscript and all my notes and memoranda, except those for the period 1834 to 1848, were destroyed by fire. Before that occurrence the history of the Cape Colony had been brought down to 1834 in three published volumes, and the history of the emigrant farmers was before the public in two others. Even under favourable circumstances several years would be required to prepare another volume, and I am so situated as to be barely on the right side of the line that separates the possible from the impossible, so far as writing history is concerned. My publishers had previously informed me that the edition of my first volume upon the emigrant farmers was nearly out of print. I therefore resolved to alter it somewhat in form, and to add to it the history of the Cape Colony from 1834 to 1848. As it now is, the five completed volumes are continuous in chronological order, the history of the Cape Colony is brought down in them to 1848, the history of Natal to 1846, and that of the Republics and Native States to 1872. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English and the Dutch in South Africa: A Historical Retrospect As past events throw a good deal of light on the present position in the Transvaal Republic, I have endeavoured to detach the thread of anglo-dutch relations from the tangled skein of South African history, and to give a plain account of the policy of the English towards the Dutch from the beginning. Most of the facts connected'with the earlier part of the story are given on the authority of Mr. George m'coll Thea], Whose personal know ledge of South Africa and its various peoples, and careful study of the Cape archives, has enabled him to compile an inexhaustible mass of valuable information in the five monumental volumes of his History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of South Africa, Vol. 1 IN the presenting of these volumes on the birds of South Africa, it has been my endeavour to create in the minds of my readers a love and a keen appreciation of our beautiful and useful allies. From my earliest youth I have made an intimate study of the creatures of mountain, veld, forest, and stream in their native haunts. The results of some of these studies have already been published in book form in the Natural History of South Africa and Snakes of South Africa. My intention was to have published these volumes at an earlier date, but, owing to unforeseen circumstances, their publication has been held over. The results of several years of research and study of the birds of South Africa were recorded in a number of diaries. These records were lent to a naturalist friend with permission to take notes from them. Alas! He lost them all. It was a sad loss to me, resulting in further years of investigation. In the historical chapters, however, and in those which deal with recent politics, no changes have been made save such as were needed for the correction Of one or two slight errors Of fact, and for the mention of new facts, later in date than the first edition. I have left the statements of my own views exactly as they were first written, even where I thought that the form Of a statement might be verbally improved, not only because I still adhere to those views, but also because I desire it to be clearly understood that they were formed and expressed before the events Of the last few months, and without any reference to the controversies Of the moment.
