Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 1 Georgia's history has heretofore existed, at least for the reading public, only in detached fragments, or in meager chronological outlines. This statement is not intended to convey any disparagement. The histories written by McCall, Stevens, and Jones, are works of surpassing value and, for the periods covered, are exhaustive of detail. But these histories deal only with the State's Colonial and Revolutionary epochs. Isaac W. Avery has made a luminous contribution to the history of the Civil war, dealing, however, principally with political events connected with the picturesque personality of Georgia's war governor. Lawton B. Evans has written a splendid epitome of the states political history, while U. B. Phillips, of the University of Michigan, and R. P. Brooks, of the University of Georgia, have each treated the subject with great ability from economic and sociological points of view. Gen. Clement A. Evans, and Prof. Joseph T. Derry, have each discussed the subject in its military aspects. The necessity for a work, therefore, weaving together in one continuous narrative the complete history of Georgia has long been felt. It was the purpose of Col. Charles C. Jones, Jr., the states greatest historian, to bring his masterful work down to the present time, but ere his stupendous task was half finished, death sheathed his shining pen forever. The present work is not designed to complete the unfinished task of Colonel Jones. That glorious Georgian will always occupy a niche in the Temple of Fame peculiarly his own. This work is intended only as a sincere and earnest contribution to the state's political annals, to bridge the gaps which have heretofore existed, and to connect the more or less familiar story of Georgia's remote historic past with the narrative of recent happenings. It is to be regretted that important records no longer exist on which to base an accurate account of the period immediately subsequent to the Revolution. This is due to the fact that when Georgia was overrun by the British, some of her most precious documents suffered destruction. The loss is an irreparable one, since the period in question was a period of beginnings, marked by organic changes. Original sources of information are also lacking for other periods; all of which emphasizes how important it is for the state to create a Department of Archives, in which to safeguard its immortal things. The necessity for providing quarters in which to house current volumes often relegates the old records to dark nooks and corners, where the agencies of decay make sad havoc of priceless values. New England's dearest care for generations has been her sacred memorials. Georgia's history is not one whit less glorious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Georgia, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing Brief Sketches of the Most Remarkable Events, Up to the Present Day IT is the practice of almost every writer to preface his productions with apologies. Per haps their are few who have a better claim to the lenity and indulgence of critics, than the au thor of this work never-having contemplated ap pearing in the character of an historian, he has re. Luctantly, and not entirely with his own consent, offered the following sheets to the press. With out map or compass, he entered an unexplored forest, destitute of any other guide than a few ragged pamphlets, defaced news-papers, and scraps of manuscripts. In many instances he has been obliged to resort to the aged, and appeal to their memories for a connection of events, re lating to the history of Georgia in its infancy. In commencing the enquiries and collecting the facts which have terminated in this work, it was the author's intention to proffer them to an histo rian, who was capable of doing justice to the task, and he made the offer to several gentlemen whose talents were equal to the undertaking, but he uniformly found that their avocations inter fered with the accomplishment Of a plan, which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, Vol. 1 The compilation of the Colonial and Revolutionary records of Georgia has been attended with unusual difficulties. These difficulties were due to the loss or destruction of many of the most important documents and record-books pertaining to those two periods of the history of the State. When Savannah fell into the hands of the British in December, 1778, the Secretary of State, Captain John Milton, by order of Gov cruor Houstoun, conveyed the most important records of his office and that of the Governor to Charleston to prevent their capture by the enemy; but the older records, pertaining to the early Colonial period, and many of those relating to the period of the Royal Governors, were left behind and lost. Georgia's earliest historian, Captain Hugh mccall, who wrote about the beginning of the last century, in speaking of the records saved by Captain Milton says: These records, principally belonging to the office of Secretary of State, were almost the only public papers of Georgia which were preserved. Of those thus saved at that time many were doubtless subsequently lost in their frequent removals from place to place in the efl'ort to save them from capture; and many of those still in exis tence are in a mutilated and fragmentary condition. Prior to the fall of Charleston, in May, 1780, Secretary Milton again removed his records, this time overland in wagons from Charleston to Newbern, North Caro lina, where he left them in the care of Governor Nash of that State, and returned to the army. Later on, when Georgia and South Carolina had been entirely overrun by the British and Tories. And North Carolina was invaded, and the Georgia records were again in danger of capture, Cap tain Milton got leave of absence from his command and carried them to Maryland, where they remained until after the close of the war, when they were brought back to Georgia. Thus were saved through the War of the Revolution most of the papers and documents pertaining to the office of Secretary of State, and a part, and only a part, of those belong ing to the office of the Governor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Savannah: Compiled and Written by Savannah Unit Federal Writers' Project in Georgia Works Progress Administration The authors of this book have caught the spirit of Savannah, and the reader will glean from its pages an understanding of that intangible hold which she has on her people, which makes them think of her with longing affection even after years of enforced absence, and brings within her doors time after time visitors who have once come under the spell of her charm. The easy, informal style of the volume differentiates it from the usual guide book. While its primary purpose is to introduce the visitor to the points of special attraction, it will prove of interest also to the armchair traveler who has no immediate prospect of seeing Savannah for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Georgia, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its First Discovery by Europeans to the Adoption of the Present Constitution in 1798 Entering a field of enquiry which has been reaped by four predecessors, I could scarcely expect to do more than glean here and there a sheaf which the sickle had spared, or the reaper neglected. My success in collecting materials has more than equalled my most sanguine expectations, and enabled me to present a fuller and more authentic work than could have been written at any former time. By virtue of a resolution of the Georgia Legislature, passed December 23d, 1837, the Governor appointed the Rev. Charles Wallace Howard an agent of the State, to repair to London, for the purpose of procuring the colonial records, or copies thereof, now in the Colonial Departments of Great Britain, that relate to the history and settlement of this State. By the further liberality of the same body, the papers which were the result of his mission, were placed in my library, for the purpose of preparing this history.
