Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome: From the Earliest Times to the Death of Commodus, A. D. 192 It is a fact which can not but be surprising to every one who has at all looked into the subject, that, notwithstanding the extraordinary efforts which have within the last thirty or forty years been made by great men of all countries in investigating the History of Rome - her Constitution, Laws, Religion, Literature, and Social condition - and notwithstanding the important results which have not only changed the aspect of the early History of Rome, but have, at the same time, given a different tone and color to the later history of that extraordinary nation - the books on Roman History which are used in our schools still continue, to a great extent, to be what they were half a century ago. Old errors and misconceptions, which have long since been exposed and exploded by scholars, are daily repeated and impressed upon the mind and memory of the rising generation, and the student is left to discover these errors at a maturer age, when it is not always an easy matter to get rid of them. But why, in the name of truth, should boys continue to learn that which has been proved again and again to be false and incorrect, and which afterward they have to unlearn? The teacher has so much to do in storing the minds of his pupils with knowledge, and in training their mental powers to independent activity, that it is worse than waster of time to teach that which is false or unsound, and which, in the progress of their studies, must prove an obstacle rather than an assistance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome: From the Earliest Times to the Death of Commodus, A. D. 192 A nation which has exercised such an influence upon the fate of its cotemporaries, and upon posterity, has a claim to the most careful consideration of every thinking man; and all that can be said of the importance of history in general holds good in a much higher degree in that of Rome. As there is no modern nation whose history pre sents so many points of resemblance and comparison with that of Rome as the English, so the history of Rome de serves the greatest attention of every Englishman, who has nere an opportunity of seeing the history of his own coun try, as it were, foreshadowed in a mirror. There is a class of persons who look at all historical studies, and more es pecially at the study of antiquity, with disregard, if not with contempt, and at best treat it only as a matter of curiosity. Such a mode of thinking, however, is only the fruit of ig norance, which generally depreciates that which lies be yond its comprehension; and, surely, no one ought to listen to the advice of persons who talk about things of which they are ignorant. That school of modern philosophy, moreover, which would fain turn our eyes from the past, and persuade us to look only to the present and the future, is of the very shallowest kind it removes from under our feet the firm ground on which we stand, and shows as much wisdom as it would if it taught us to believe that men were made for flying instead of walking. He who wishes to comprehend the resent, and divine the future, must take his lessons from the past; for it is there that he finds the roots of the present, and the germs of the future. D.; By the Library Method, for Schools and Colleges The accompanying work is the outcome of several years of experience and experiment in the teaching of History. The frequent complaint, I don't like History, led to discard ing the old method of assigning a uniform lesson from a single text-book, with its brief outline of important events. Mommsen's four-volume History of Rome, Philip Smith's three-volume History of the World, and two or three brief school text-books by different authors, were placed upon the teacher's desk. Several topics were written on the blackboard, and the class told to look them up in any of the aforesaid books. The inability of the young pupil to use a library became at once appar ent. He could not find his way among the multitude of minor details and side issues in the more elaborate works. Thus, learning to use books became a practical part of the advantage in this method. To avoid unnecessary discouragement attendant on this experience, the teacher added to the topics the volume, and later, the pages, on which the essentials of the subject were to be found. The topics are arranged, so far as possible, in a chronological order; but when unity of subject has occasionally demanded it, chronology has. Been sacrificed to logic. Book excerpt: The emperor Commodus (AD 180-192) has commonly been portrayed as an insane madman, whose reign marked the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire. Indeed, the main point of criticism on his father, Marcus Aurelius, is that he appointed his son as his successor. Especially Commodus’ behaviour as a gladiator, and the way he represented himself with divine attributes (especially those of Hercules), are often used as evidence for the emperor’s presumed madness. However, this ‘political biography’ will apply modern interpretations of the spectacles in the arena, and of the imperial cult, to Commodus' reign. It will focus on the dissemination and reception of imperial images, and suggest that there was a method in Commodus’ madness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient times, the Roman games—that heady cocktail of mass slaughter, gladiatorial combat, and chariot racing—made strong political, social, and cultural statements. The Roman emperor Commodus wanted to kill a rhinoceros with a bow and arrow, and he wanted to do it in the Colosseum. Commodus’s passion for hunting animals was so fervent that he dreamt of shooting a tiger, an elephant, and a hippopotamus; his prowess was such that people claimed he never missed when hurling his javelin or firing arrows from his bow. For fourteen days near the end of AD 192, the emperor mounted one of the most lavish and spectacular gladiatorial games Rome had ever seen. Commodus himself was the star attraction, and people rushed from all over Italy to witness the spectacle. But this slaughter was simply the warm-up act to the main event: the emperor was also planning to fight as a gladiator. Why did Roman rulers spend vast resources on such over-the-top displays—and why did some emperors appear in them as combatants? Why did the Roman rabble enjoy watching the slaughter of animals and the sight of men fighting to the death? And how best can we in the modern world understand what was truly at stake in the circus and the arena? In The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino, Jerry Toner set out to answer these questions by vividly describing what it would have been like to attend Commodus’ fantastic shows and watch one of his many appearances as both hunter and fighter. Highlighting the massive logistical effort needed to supply the games with animals, performers, and criminals for execution, the book reveals how blood and gore were actually incidental to what really mattered. Gladiatorial games played a key role in establishing a forum for political debate between the rulers and the ruled. Roman crowds were not passive: they were made up of sophisticated consumers with their own political aims, which they used the games to secure. In addition, the games also served as a pure expression of what it meant to be a true Roman. Drawing on notions of personal honor, manly vigor, and sophisticated craftsmanship, the games were a story that the Romans loved to tell themselves about themselves.
