Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Richland County, Ohio (Including the Original Boundaries), Its Past and Present: Containing a Condensed Comprehensive History of Ohio, Including an Outline History of the Northwest, a Complete History of Richland County, Its Townships, Cities, Towns and Villages, Schools, Churches, Societies, &C The work was commenced about one year ago. It was thought best to include an outline history of Ohio, as histories of the State are quite rare. Over one hundred pages of the book are devoted to this subject, giving in as condensed a form as possible the narrative of the growth of Ohio. Mr. N. N. Hill, J r., a resident of Mansfield and a very accurate, careful writer, was engaged to assist in writing and compiling the history. For this purpose he visited nearly every township in the county, and gathered its local history. -to his persevering efforts, much of the detailed history is due. Mr. Hill made the drawing from which the picture the first cabin in Richland County was made. Agents to canvass the county, and to gather the history of families, were secured, and sent into the county. Each township was kept separate, and the history of each family properly condensed and prepared for press. In some instances, the agents have gathered longer biographies than was necessary (noticeably the case in Worthington and Monroe Townships, the compiler not having time to revisit and rewrite their biographies. Only the facts are aimed to be given, and are all that should appear in any history. The compiler does not hold himself responsible for the statements made in any biography. Each one was written at the dictation of the persons whose history it preserves, or by competent persons who knew the family, and who only can be held responsible. In this volume, the aim has constantly been to give the simple narrative of facts as they occurred. History is simply a narrative of events. In works of this character, it is impossible to obtain that accuracy of detail desirable. The memory of no one is infallible, and in this book the larger part is obtained from the recollection of those who passed through the scenes here recorded. Often such persons came to the compiler and desired to correct their statements asserting they had forgotten some valuable part, or unconsciously and unintentionally made a slight error. All statements were verified as far as it was possible to do so and, where any discrepancy arose, two or three statements were obtained, compared, and the proper one determined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio’s small towns have great stories. Little Ohio presents 100 of the state’s tiniest towns and most miniature villages. With populations under 500, these charming and unique locations dot the entire state—from Lake Seneca in the Northwest corner to Neville, bordering the Ohio River and the state of Kentucky. Little Ohio even ventures into Lake Erie, telling the story of Put-in-Bay. The selected locations help readers to appreciate the broader history of small-town life in Ohio. Yet each featured town boasts a distinct narrative, as unique as the citizens who call these places home. Some villages offer hundreds of years of history, such as Tarlton, laid out before Ohio had even gained statehood. Others were built with more expedience, such as Yankee Lake, a town that was incorporated simply so its founder could host dances on Sundays without breaking state law. With full-color photographs, fun facts, and fascinating details about every locale, it’s almost as if you’re walking down Main Street, waving hello to folks who know you by name. These residents are innovators, hard workers, and—most of all—good neighbors. They’re people who have piled into small school houses to wait out roaring flood waters, rebuilt after disastrous fires took their homes, and captured bandits straight out of the Wild West. Little Ohio, written by lifelong resident Kieran Robertson, is for anyone who grew up in a small town and for everyone who takes pride in being called an Ohioan. It’s one book with one hundred places to love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE It was the worst two-week killing spree in Ohio's history. On the night of July 21, 1948, Robert Daniels and John West entered John and Nolena Niebel's house with loaded guns. They forced the family including the Niebel's 21-year-old daughter, Phyllis, into their car and drove them to a cornfield just off Fleming Falls Road in Mansfield. The two men instructed the Niebels to remove all of their clothing, and then Robert Daniels shot each of them in the head. The brutal murders caught national attention in the media, but the killing spree didn't stop there. Three more innocent people would lose their lives at the hands of Daniels and West in the coming week. Scott Fields tirelessly researched the killings, the capture and trial of Daniels and even interviewed a surviving member of the Niebel family to weave this tragic story into a must-read novel bringing the reader back to those dark days in the summer of 1948. What led to these brutal killings, and why was the Niebel family singled-out to be savagely murdered? It has been more than sixty years since the tragedy, and, yet, this question still remains unanswered. The killing spree is not only remembered to this day, but is an important and dark part of Mansfield lore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chilling true crime history reveals the story of a young woman in nineteenth century rural Ohio who poisoned her family for love. It was a cold and rainy day in Ohio’s Pleasant Valley in the spring of 1896, one that began like any other for the Rose family. What they didn’t know was that young Ceely Rose was brooding. She’d been told to forget her obsession with handsome Guy Berry. She’d been told about the danger of Rough-on-Rats poison. She’d heard about murdering those who stand in the way of love. By the time Ceely was done, her family would be dead and others threatened. Later, the place where these crimes took place became Malabar Farm, the estate of Pulitzer Prize–winning author and conservationist Louis Bromfield. In The Ceely Rose Murders at Malabar Farm, Ohio author and historian Mark Sebastian Jordan examines the story of the Poisoner of Pleasant Valley, and how it has resonated throughout the years.

In addition to exploring the film and novella from which it was adapted, this book also traces the history of the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, which served as the film’s central location, and its relationship to the movie’s fictional Shawshank Prison. The last chapter examines why this film has remained both a popular and critical success, inspiring diverse fan bases on the Internet and the evolution of the Shawshank Trail, fourteen of the film’s actual site locations that have become a major tourist attraction in central Ohio.
