Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sound of the choir of King's College, Cambridge - its voices perfectly blended, its emotions restrained, its impact sublime - has become famous all over the world, and for many, the distillation of a particular kind of Englishness. This is especially so at Christmas time, with the broadcast of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, whose centenary is celebrated this year. How did this small band of men and boys in a famous fenland town in England come to sing in the extraordinary way they did in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries? It has been widely assumed that the King's style essentially continues an English choral tradition inherited directly from the Middle Ages. In this original and illuminating book, Timothy Day shows that this could hardly be further from the truth. Until the 1930s, the singing at King's was full of high Victorian emotionalism, like that at many other English choral foundations well into the twentieth century. The choir's modern sound was brought about by two intertwined revolutions, one social and one musical. From 1928, singing with the trebles in place of the old lay clerks, the choir was fully made up of choral scholars - college men, reading for a degree. Under two exceptional directors of music - Boris Ord from 1929 and David Willcocks from 1958 - the style was transformed and the choir broadcast and recorded until it became the epitome of English choral singing, setting the benchmark for all other choral foundations either to imitate or to react against. Its style has now been taken over and adapted by classical performers who sing both sacred and secular music in secular settings all over the world with a precision inspired by the King's tradition. I Saw Eternity the Other Night investigates the timbres of voices, the enunciation of words, the use of vibrato. But the singing of all human beings, in whatever style, always reflects in profound and subtle ways their preoccupations and attitudes to life. These are the underlying themes explored by this book.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Western Music Theory is the first comprehensive history of Western music theory to be published in the English language. A collaborative project by leading music theorists and historians, the volume traces the rich panorama of music-theoretical thought from the Ancient Greeks to the present day. Recognizing the variety and complexity of music theory as an historical subject, the volume has been organized within a flexible framework. Some chapters are defined chronologically within a restricted historical domain, whilst others are defined conceptually and span longer historical periods. Together the thirty-one chapters present a synthetic overview of the fascinating and complex subject that is historical music theory. Richly enhanced with illustrations, graphics, examples and cross-citations as well as being thoroughly indexed and supplemented by comprehensive bibliographies of the most important primary and secondary literature, this book will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: Boy choristers have sung the daily liturgy in English cathedrals and collegiate churches for fourteen hundred years. They are treasured as a unique part of our religious and cultural heritage, unmatched anywhere else in the world. Yet their history, in cathedrals and monasteries, in royal and collegiate chapels, from the middle ages, through the upheavals of the Reformation, in Georgian neglect and Victorian revival, to their CD-celebrated triumphs of today and the introduction of girls, has never before been told. The English Chorister, with its vivid, sometimes bizarre, sometimes hilarious detail, will interest musicologists, church historians and a wide general readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1986 The Architectural History of King's College Chapel provides a complete picture of how and why King’s College Chapel came to be built. Francis Woodman uses the evidence both of structure and style and finance and patronage to present the organisation and mechanics of the structural campaigns spread over more than seventy years. He proposes a completely new sequence of constructions from that hitherto accepted, together with clear evidence of changes in policy concerning the intention to vault the Chapel part-way through construction. The book also contains the first complete analysis of the remarkable Tudor building accounts and their significance for the study of mediaeval architectural history. King’s College Chapel is placed within the context of the contemporary architecture in both England and France and, for the first time, English late mediaeval architecture is considered and presented as one part of a wider European movement. This book is a must read for scholars and researchers of British architecture and architectural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where religion refuses to expire, two responses predominate. The first, to retrench within the certainties of one's native or adopted faith, questioning nothing; the second, to sneer and snarl from the secular side-lines. Here, Stephen Cherry offers a third alternative for religious believer, agnostic, and atheist alike - to engage with the study of theology. Confessing himself to be a reluctant theologian, Cherry puts forward three positive reasons why more people should take theology seriously - because it's fascinating, fun and important. He suggests that genuine theology is the antidote to fundamentalism, contrasts the theological approaches of Jesus of Nazareth and Richard Dawkins, introduces some of the biggest puzzles unravelled by theology, and reviews the history of the subject in fewer than 20 tweets. Drawing people at all stages of life into a more serious engagement with the riches, delights and fun of theology, it is a book for any who find themselves to be a little God-curious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bettina Varwig places the music of the celebrated Dresden composer Heinrich Schütz in a richly detailed tapestry of cultural, political, religious and intellectual contexts. Four key events in Schütz's career - the 1617 Reformation centenary, the performance of his Dafne in 1627, the 1636 funeral composition Musikalische Exequien and the publication of his motet collection Geistliche Chormusik (1648) - are used to explore his music's resonances with broader historical themes, including the effects of the Thirty Years' War, contemporary meanings of classical mythology, Lutheran attitudes to death and the afterlife as well as shifting conceptions of time and history in light of early modern scientific advances. These original seventeenth-century circumstances are treated in counterpoint with Schütz's fascinating later reinvention in nineteenth- and twentieth-century German musical culture, providing a new kind of musicological writing that interweaves layers of historical inquiry from the seventeenth century to the present day.

By challenging narrow and inadequate conceptions of the field, Estelle Jorgensen raises the possibility of alternative views that can dignify the teacher's task, enrich and enliven the profession, and validate an exciting range of additional ways in which music education can be undertaken in the contemporary world. One of the most respected leaders in music education, Jorgensen emphasizes world music and ethnomusicology as equal partners alongside the more conventional sounds and styles that have dominated the classroom. Exemplifying sound scholarship, thorough research, and compelling argument, In Search of Music Education will be especially welcome wherever teachers strive to deal with requirements for responsible music education.
