Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1952, A History of Ireland Under the Union was written by an historian who played an active part in the political events of the later part of the period. In Ireland there are two national traditions: that of the Kingdom of the Gael, established at the end of the 4th Century A.D. and the other colonial tradition evolved by the descendants of various generations of Planters from England. The book provides a full account of 19th Century Irish history and shows how the colonial nationalists discarded their nationalism after 1801 and how the emerging Gael, under Daniel O’ Connell adopted and fused the two traditions into an Irish national tradition which was vitalised by Irish literature and culture. Containing much original source material the book throws light on aspects of Irish history whose significance is often overlooked such as the part played by the RIC and the Secret Societies in Ireland and the USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first edition was published in 1967, it was acknowledged as a notable addition to the literature available to the student interested in Irish history and development. This new edition not only uses that earlier material, which has been amended and brought up to date, but also contains a new concluding section which offers an insight into events up to 1973. This terminal date has been selected because it can be seen in two separate ways as a critical point in the Anglo-Irish political relationship. In 1972 both countries determined upon becoming members of the EEC, and the Northern Ireland parliament was suspended. The author contends that the last remnant of the Act of Union may have been placed under death-sentence then and that, if that is the case, 1972 will prove to be the closing entry in a ledger which reads, 1801, 1922, 1972.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years of Ireland’s union with Great Britain are most often regarded as a period of great turbulence and conflict. And so they were. But there are other stories too, and these need to be integrated in any account of the period. Ireland’s progressive primary education system is examined here alongside the Famine; the growth of a happily middle-class Victorian suburbia is taken into account as well as the appalling Dublin slum statistics. In each case, neither story stands without the other. This study synthesises some of the main scholarly developments in Irish and British historiography and seeks to provide an updated and fuller understanding of the debates surrounding nineteenth- and early twentieth-century history.

Book excerpt: This work takes Irish history from the Act of Union in 1801 through the next ten years of its volatile history and relationship with England. As a contemporary account saturated with documentary evidence by an astute Catholic political historian it is unsurprising that it too caused a scandal. Upon refusing to pay a libel charge, Plowden fled to France where he ended his days at the Scots College in Paris. Plowden's History is an essential resource for understanding the making of Ireland. --both works available together for the first time since original publication --continuation of the above work --contemporary Catholic account of the first ten turbulent years of the Union

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together thirteen of the leading historians of the period to investigate the political, social and cultural significance of the Irish Act of Union. Marking the bicentenary of the passage of the act, the contributors combine to provide an authoritative account of the state of the historical debate. Divided in four sections, the book investigates the origins of the act, its actual passage into legislation, the political debate which surrounded the act in Ireland and beyond, and the central role played by religious considerations in its final shaping. This book provides the results of recent research into the passing of the Union, and supplies the reader with an indispensable starting-point for understanding the significance of the 1801 union of Ireland with Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides the first comprehensive analysis of industrial development in Ireland and its impact on Irish society between 1801-1922. Studies of Irish industrial history to date have been regionally focused or industry specific. The book addresses this problem by bringing together the economic and social dimensions of Irish industrial history during the Union between Ireland and Great Britain. In this period, British economic and political influences on Ireland were all pervasive, particularly in the industrial sphere as a consequence of the British industrial revolution. By making the Irish industrial story more relevant to a wider national and international audience and by adopting a more multi-disciplinary approach which challenges many of the received wisdoms derived from narrow regional or single industry studies - this book will be of interest to economic historians across the globe as well as all those interested in Irish history more generally.
