Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Eton College: 1440-1875 An historical work on Eton admits of several modes of treatment, and commands the interest of persons of various tastes and habits of thought. According to some, it should be a biographical register of successive Provosts, Fellows, and Masters, who have guided a great national institution through more than four centuries of almost unbroken prosperity; according to others, it should trace the continuous existence of an ecclesiastical corporation, richly endowed and boasting a picturesque pile of medieval buildings; some think that it should follow the careers of a vast number of England's greatest men from the cradle to the grave; others that it should be a record of educational progress, a treatise on grammars and exercises; while yet another class would wish to see in it a faithful picture of school life at different periods, with long accounts of popular games and boyish adventures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eton College Register, 1753-1790: Alphabetically Arranged and Edited With Biographical Notes Nearly sixty years have passed since the late Mr. H. E. Chetwynd-Stapylton published the first instalment of his well-known Eton School Lists which covered, when completed, the period from 1791 to 1892. Though the number of books dealing with Eton which have been produced in the intervening years has not been small, no attempt has been made to issue an earlier biographical register of Etonians. Nor need this fact call for any great surprise. Mr. Stapylton had taken the date 1791 as his starting-point for the very sound reason that this was the first year in which it had occurred to anyone at Eton - and we owe the idea to William Hexter, the ingenious writing-master of the day - to put into print the School-list which was annually compiled at Election time. By a curious coincidence, too, the earliest entrance-books known in Mr. Stapylton's time to exist were those of Dr. Heath, who became headmaster at the end of that same year. Thus, in the absence of printed school lists and entrance-books, the task of editing a register was none too easy. Yet an earlier register was certainly to be desired, if Eton were not to fall behind other schools in this respect. Before, however, such a work could be undertaken, it was necessary to see if sufficient foundations existed upon which to build it. From direct sources in print little help could be gained. It is more like a folksy talk. No effort has been made to scrape star dust, or to produce a tall specimen of literary skill, but rather to write in common everyday language for common people like you and me. We release the book with fear and trembling. We are sure that some readers will find cause for complaint - some times over what is included and at other times over what is omitted. Probably every reader will recall bits of information which would have been invaluable if included in the book, but we beg all to please remember that you may possess information this poor scribe has never known. This book is not perfect. We have done the best we could. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Eton Colleger: 1898 1902 During the few years that I had the honour of enjoying the bounty of King Henry the Sixth as a Colleger of Eton, I met many people, wholly or partially ignorant of Eton life and its ways, who were most anxious to know how we got on in College. They asked many questions, and I gathered from their general tenor that the world at large, or such part of it as was at all interested in Eton, believed that the Collegers were badly housed, badly fed, and generally had a most rotten time of it, if I may use schoolboy slang. Looking back on my school-time, I can say with perfect sincerity that, far from being badly housed and badly provided for, I have never spent such happy years as those with Mother Eton in the classic shades of College. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the King's College of Our Lady of Eton Beside Windsor Prefaces are proverbially left unread, but they serve an office similar to that of the letters to the Chancellor of the Exchequer signed with initials and enclosing the halves of bank notes. They are the method by which the author pays conscience money; and anyone writing a history of Eton will find that his debts cannot fail to be heavy. After Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte's monumental book there are but beggarly gatherings for the gleaner, and I cannot express too humbly how much I am indebted to him. Next to that, Willis and Clark's Architectural History of Cambridge, and Etoniana, a brilliant book by a non-Etonian, have been of great service. The Sloane MSS. in the British Museum and the Rawlinson MSS. at Oxford contain a good deal of matter in a somewhat chaotic state and with a great deal of repetition, but they are the foundation of all the histories of Eton. I should have liked to have made more detailed examination than has been possible of the Eton muniments, which sadly want proper calendaring and arrangement. Some gleanings have been afforded by the Calendars of State Papers and the Reports of the Historical MSS. Commission; but it is much to be wished that some more of our Etonian families would search their family papers for old letters and diaries that would throw light on the daily life of Eton boys in past times. The Eton Manuscripts were the first to which I had access. When I was an Eton boy, the College authorities generously allowed me to examine them. The kindness was a great one, and I hope it was not misplaced. The least I could have done in return was to put at their disposal such knowledge as they had helped me to gain; and this is what I have tried to do. That there are mistakes and omissions in this volume I have not the least doubt: yet I cannot but hope that there is also a good deal of information which will be helpful to scholars both in England and abroad. My sincere thanks are due to the College for undertaking the printing of this Catalogue: and to the Provost, Dr Hornby, and the vice-provost and Librarian, Mr warre-cornish. The former has always been most kind in giving me access to the Library while the latter has helped me and furthered my work in every possible way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eton College Hunt: A Short History of Beagling at Eton There seems to be no real reason for writing a Preface to this book except for the purpose of thanking the many Old Etonians who have given me their assistance in its production. At the same time I should like to take this opportunity of explaining that, when I began compiling this record of the Eton College Hunt, it was mainly for the purpose of amusing myself during the intervals of school work, football and beagling in the Michaelmas Half of 1921, and it was not until the book was nearly finished that I became bold enough to imagine that it might be of interest to others who, like myself, have hunted the hare on the ploughs of Dorney and Datchet. I am only too conscious of the inadequacy of my own work, but, in Spite of its defects, I hope that this short history of a pack of Beagles which has been in existence for 644 years, and which has given their first experience of hound lore to so many eminent amateur huntsmen, may be of some interest to Etonians past, present and future. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... XII ETON AT THE PRESENT DAY It must not be supposed from the last chapter that the only antidote to the ordinary routine of work in or out of school was to be found in games. A more serious interlude was often performed by the leading boys in the school. In 1811 Charles Fox Townshend, a member of a family renowned at Eton and in the annals of the State, founded a debating society, known as 'The Eton Society.' At first its members were known as 'Literati.' The name, however, by which the Eton Society is most widely known is that of 'Pop, ' the origin of the name being traced on fairly certain grounds to the fact that the Society met for some years in a room over a confectioner's shop, or popina, kept by Mrs. Hatton. In 1846, on the abolition of the old Christopher Inn, 'Pop' removed itself to part of these premises, where it has remained until the present day, although the old inn building is now at the time of writing doomed to destruction. The Society at first consisted of twenty members, a number afterwards increased to twenty-eight. Most of the brilliant Etonians of the early part of the century--Gladstone, Selwyn, Derby, Sir Francis Doyle, and others--made their dtbut as orators in 'Pop, ' and the high tone of the debates was kept up until quite recently. In later years, however, when the qualifications of a boy for 'Pop' became due more to his social weight in the school than to his personal talents, the quality of the debates began to decline, and at the present day debates have nearly, if not altogether, ceased to take place at all, 'Pops' being merely a select clique of chosen 'swells.' It is greatly to be hoped that some effort may be made to revive the drooping glory of 'Pop' as a famous Etonian institution, and that the familiar.
