It did not, I believe, continue through its first year." In 1842 Dr. L. M. Lawson began the publication of the Western Lancet, a journal which under various names has regularly appeared until the present time. In January, 1858, it absorbed the Cincinnati Medical Observer, for twenty years afterward being known as the Lancet and Observer; then it was united with the Clinic in July, 1878, and its title was the Lancet and Clinic, later the Lancet-Clinic, its present name. The Clinic, the issue of which began in August, 1871, was the first weekly medical journal in the West, and up to the time of its union with the Lancet and Observer was under the control of the Faculty of the Medical College of Ohio. Since 1847 there has been regular publication of the Dental Register (Dental Register of the West prior to 1866), and since 1843 of the Eclectic Medical Journal, which for seven years before had been published at Worthington, Ohio. The Cincinnati Medical Journal, originally known as the Cincinnati Medical and Dental Journal, has been in existence since 1885, and the Ohio Medical Journal (for two years known as the Journal of the Medical College of Ohio) since 1890. A number of journals, general and special, have from time to time appeared in our city, and after awhile suspended publication. Among these may be named the Obstetric Gazette, the Cincinnati Journal of Health, the American Psychological Journal, the Cincinnati Journal of Medicine, the American Medical Journal, the Cincinnati Medical Recorder, the Cincinnati Medical News, the Cincinnati Medical Repertory, the Journal of...

The district surveyed extended one hundred and twenty miles west of the. Pennsylvania line, and from the 41st parallel to Lake Erie. Mr. Hutchins adopted a system of surveys by meridians and parallels, dividing into ranges, towns, and sections. Each township being six miles square, and subdivided into thirtysix sections, of one mile square, or six hundred and forty acres. This plan has ever since been in use by the government in surveying the public lands. It was used in all the surveys made in Ohio, except in the United States millitary district, in the Connecticut reserve, and in the Virginia military district. The political subdivision of the Miami purchase began in 1790. On the 2d day of January of that year, governor St. Clair arrived at Cincinnati, I or then Losantiville, and soon afterwards organized the county of Hamilton. Judge Symmes, in a letter to Jonathan Dayton, one of the proprietors of the Miami purchase, dated January 9, 1790, says of that event: "Governor St. Clair arrived at Losantiville on the 2d instant. He could be prevailed on to stay with us but three nights. He has organized this purchase into a.c0unty. His excellency complimented me with the honor of naming the county. I called it Hamiton County, after the Secretary of the Treasury, General Harmar has named the New Garrison Fort Washington. The governor has made Losantiville, the county town, by the name of Cincinnati. so that Losantiville will become extinct." Judge Burnet, in his Notes on the North Western Territory, relates a very romantic story as to the cause of Cincinnati becoming the emporium of Ohio: The New Jersey Company had intended that North Bend should be the great city of the Miami country. But this...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Aaron, one of todays foremost scholars of American history and American studies, began his career in 1942 with this classic study of Cincinnati in frontier days. Aaron argues that the Queen City quickly became an important urban center that in many ways resembled eastern cities more than its own hinterlands, with a populace united by its desire for economic growth. Aaron traces Cincinnati's development as a mercantile and industrial center during a period of intense national political and social ferment. The city owed much of its success as an urban center to its strategic location on the Ohio River and easy access to fertile backcountry. Despite an early over-reliance on commerce and land speculation and neglect of manufacturing, by 1838 Cincinnati's basic industries had been established and the city had outstripped her Ohio River rivals. Aaron's account of Cincinnati during this tumultuous period details the ways in which Cincinnatians made the most of commerce and manufacturing, how they met their civic responsibilities, and how they survived floods, fires, and cholera. He goes on to discuss the social and cultural history of the city during this period, including the development of social hierarchies, the operations of the press, the rage for founding societies of all kinds, the response of citizens to national and international events, the commercial elite's management of radicals and nonconformists, the nature of popular entertainment and serious culture, the efforts of education, and the messages of religious institutions. For historians, particularly those interested in urban and social history, Daniel Aaron's view of Cincinnati offers a rare opportuniry to viewantebellum American society in a microcosm, along with all of the institutions and attitudes that were prevalent in urban America during this important time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From the History of Cincinnati and the Territory of Ohio: Showing the Trials and Hardships of the Pioneers in the Early Settlement of Cincinnati and the West These Indians owned, or pretended to-own, all the Northwest Territory as far west as the Mississippi River. And that southwest of the Ohio River as far south as the Carolinas and Georgia. According to their traditions, these lands came into their possession and were held by right of conquest, their fathers, many years before, having conquered all the tribes possessing them. The right of the Six Nations to dispose of this territory has been a Subject of much discussion; but whether they had such rights is but of little consequence now, either to its present inhabitants or to the purpose of this work, further than will assist in showing by whom, and under what circum stances the City of Cincinnati was first explored, and the difficulties that followed that exploration previous to its settlement.
