In June 1882 I undertook to finish the work - not willingly or with a light heart, but after considerable pressure and at much personal sacrifice. There were various difficulties which could be foreseen, and not the least among them was the conviction that my portion of the work must necessarily appear at a disadvantage when compared with the high standard of excellence attained by my predecessor. There was, moreover, a stipulation for the completion of the work by June 1885; and, allowing for a pre-arranged and necessary absence of six months from England, this left only two and a half years for writing the history of nearly 200 species. I therein sketched out the plan of the work which I proposed to follow. Since the issue of the first volume, two species have been added to the British list. Of the Sub-alpine Warbler (Sylvia subalpina), a specimen was shot in St. Kilda in June, 1894, by Mr. J. S. Elliot, as recorded by me in the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club, Vol. IV. p. ix. Coues' Redpole (Cannabina exilipes) has been obtained by Dr. Bendelack Hewetson near Easington on the west coast of Yorkshire during the winter of 1893-94, as has been recorded by Mr. John Cordeaux in the "Naturalist" for March, 1894 (p. 84). While the criticisms on the first volume of the "Handbook" have been wholly favourable and kindly, three notices in particular have appeared, in reply to which I should like to say a few words. Dr. P. L. Sclater seems to imply ("Ibis," 1894, p. 566) that the nomenclature adopted by me in the "Handbook" is introduced into my writings for the first time, and he alludes particularly to the names of the genera in the Family Corvid, but these names are not of my own foundation. I adopted them, after monographing the whole of the Family in the "Catalogue of Birds," twenty years ago. My conclusions have been followed by naturalists in many countries, and, I hope, will continue to be so. I would further remark that Dr. Stejneger's "inconvenient discoveries" have not had a "great attraction" for me, as my kindly critic suggests. The merits of the work having been at once fully recognized, a Second Edition was called for in 1845, and then a Third, which last appeared in 1856, but a few months before its author's death. A large impression of each has been sold, and the work has been generally and deservedly regarded as the standard authority on British Ornithology. A New Edition is now demanded, not only by the public at large, but by many who possess the other issues, and a few remarks on the mode in which it is proposed to be conducted may not be out of place. The Second and Third Editions, with the exception of some few though not unimportant additions and alterations (to be presently mentioned more particularly), were, as a whole, mere reprints of the First, which, as has been already said, appeared some thirty years ago.
