The temptation was strong to include other countries, but if more than a most cursory account of these had been attempted, the space allotted to the three mentioned must have been considerably curtailed, or else the volume would have swollen to unconscionable proportions. After all, Italy and France were the two main arteries through which the Renaissance flowed, and nearly all the phases of development can be traced in them alone. French work has been treated in this volume with considerable fulness, partly because it has long been a special favourite of mine, and partly because hitherto no reliable books on the subject in English have been available. In Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, as in England, the Renaissance was always struggling, never absolutely free. In all it was hampered at first by vernacular traditions, and when it finally threw those ofi', original development was checked, to a great extent, by the overpowering influence of Italian design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Architectural Development, Vol. 1 of 3 This volume was commenced a few years back, but, owing to various causes, has only recently been finished. Its aim is to trace the development of architecture through the planning, construction, materials and principles of design of the buildings described, and to try and indicate the broad lessons which may be learned from them. No one practising architecture, however able he may be and however keen his imagination, can afford to ignore these lessons. For the history of architecture is the history of evolution; and all work in all countries and at all periods has been evolved from preceding efforts. Various influences from time to time have combined to give to the buildings of each country their distinctive character; and it is in the successful solution of the difficulties which arose in consequence of these that the value of architectural studies lies. Such influences are - religion, climate, tradition, geographical situation, the materials available, the condition of the labour market, the wealth or poverty of a people, their life, character, and requirements: these and others have made themselves felt in turn; some with great power, others with less effect. In treating, therefore, of architectural development, these factors cannot be ignored. The connection between countries and the influence which one country exercised upon another also require consideration, otherwise the links binding their arts together remain hidden. An analysis of these is necessary in dealing with the early work which fills this volume - work extending from the Pyramid days of old Egypt to about 1000 A.D., the year in which it was foretold the world would come to an end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Architecture, Vol. 2: Romanesque and Oriental The author received his first lesson in this great truth - the mis chief of restoration - when in 1860, he saw the great Cloth Hall at Ypres undergoing restoration, and made a drawing rather carefully of the fourteenth century spandril with a shattered monster, already lowered from the scaffolding, and what lay alongside of it - the care fully cut copy of that monster, ready to hoist into the newly decorated wall. His schooling still going on when, in 1882, he watched the workmen slowly carving the great corner capital of the Venetian Ducal Palace, the huge block of Istrian stone which had been already set in the place of the split and obviously unsafe stone which had borne the sea-winds during four centuries. The photo graphs of the details of Reims Cathedral which appear in this history were taken from the scaffolding reared against its walls in the way of restoration in 1883, and before those scaffoldings were taken down the simpler architectural details had been denatural ized. The French restorers have always been careful of the statues in their porches, but they are less in awe of the floral sculpture in'the hollow' mouldings above; while the pierced and wrought parapet, the geometrical tracery of window or of panel, and even the simply sculptured crocket or finial were assumed to be fully understood by the modern workman, and the old stones were simply replaced by new ones. This book has a particular interest for the home builder or owner, as is indicated by the popular appeal of some of the chapter titles; while its great est value will be ih the large number of hints it contains as to such little considered but im portant details as garbage disposal, fireplace design, heating, electric lighting, etc. In the large number of illustrations, many prove to be of interesting and commendable houses, and many of the drawings are such as would be clear to an untrained reader. In general criti cism, the publishers have made a cumbersome volume by using an unnecessarily thick paper, which indeed does not show up the half-tone illustrations as well as might have been done on a thinner stock; but this does not necessa rily detract from its value to the home builder, and it should prove a popular book.
