In the first place, it constitutes the general introduction to the Town Studies of the Wisconsin Domesday Book. In the second place, it affords a tentative sketch of the history of agriculture in this state, which it is hoped may prove serviceable until a more complete treatment of that subject shall have been made possible through the intensive local studies which the Domesday Book plan calls for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisconsin Agriculture: The Rise of the Dairy Cow But if someone had taken a farmer aside, before and during the Civil War, and said, why not make better butter and cheese and sell it all over the country and the world? The farmer probably would have laughed. That took time and a lot of work. Why be tied to a cow? Wheat was the thing. It was easy to plant and harvest and the market was good. Who ever heard of making a living off old bossy? So the farmer sowed more wheat and the price climbed until it topped two dollars a bushel. The kids chased the cows out of the woods, milked them, and the wife made butter and cheese. And in winter the cows stayed in the woods and went dry. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Wisconsin State Board of Agriculture for the Year Ending January 31, 1914 The Crop Statistics gathered and compiled in this office during the past season would indicate that never in the history of the State have crops been more abundant nor prices, as a rule, better. Government re ports confirm this statement. Their figures show that Wisconsin in not only the Greatest Dairy State, but that the yield per acre ot nearly all farm crops equal or exceed the yield reported from other states. Greater interest among those interested in securing land for agricul tural purposes is shown in the increased demand for the Crop Report! Published monthly by this Board. The demand for copies or the last Report issued in 1913 exceed the demand of one year ago by over seven thousand copies. With ten million acres of rich agricultural lands await ing development in the Northern Section of Wisconsin, this Board can lend valuable aid in attracting those interested in securing agricultural lands, through furnishing reliable crop statistics, and I would recom mend that this work be extended and improved. In corresponding with the Boards of Agriculture in various states that are doing work along this line, we find that the average expense for collecting and compiling the statistics for their monthly Crop Reports averages approximately eight hundred dollars annually. I merely call your attention to this fact in order that you may compare their expense with the expense of collecting and compiling the statistics in this office. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisconsin Lead Region The present volume is the third in the General series of the Wisconsin Domesday Book, the first being the author's Agriculture in Wisconsin, the second his Four Wisconsin Counties, Prairie and Forest. The publica tion, in atlas format, of the so-called Town Studies was experimental and has had no successor in the Domesday series. The lead region study differs from the Four Wis consin Counties in combining the history of an impor tant extractive industry, lead mining, with the history of the development of agriculture. Unlike the previous study, also, which did not deal with the industrial cities of the lake shore located within the boundaries of the counties surveyed, this book takes account of the lead ing towns, none of them large, which have served the several communities. Download or read book Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey written by A. R. Whitson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey: Soil Survey of Dane County, Wisconsin Before the greatest success in agriculture can be reached, it is necessary that the farmer should have a thorough knowledge of the soil upon his own farm. A soil may be well adapted to one crop, and poorly adapted to another crop. Clover will pro duce a vigorous growth and profitable yields on the average loam soil which contains lime and is in a sweet condition; but on a sandy soil which is sour, or in an acid condition, clover will not make a satisfactory growth. We may say, therefore, that failure is certain to be invited when such important facts are disregarded, or overlooked. The degree of success which it is possible to win on any farm is in direct proportion to the prac tical knowledge possessed by the farmer concerning the soil and its adaptation to crops. A thorough knewledge of the soil is as essential to the farmer as a knowledge of merchandise and business methods is to the merchant. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Agriculture in Minnesota In 1859 and 1860, all the grain was handled in seamless sacks; at first they started at 125 bags to a carload then they got up to 140, and, as long as it moved in sacks, 140 sacks was the limit, a little over eight tons to the carload. Later they did without the sacks by building bulk barges, lined on the inside and with cargo boxes with covers over them to keep the grain dry; and in that way it was transported in bulk. Milwaukee was practically the market for all our grain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
