Book excerpt: For more than forty years, Clark Clifford was Washington's consummate Democratic power broker - attorney and adviser to the nation's most influential leaders. His 1991 memoir, Counsel to the President, looked back on a remarkable career of public service. But the very year his autobiography was published, the Clifford legend began to crumble. Caught up in the scandal that destroyed the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, the eighty-five-year-old Clifford was arrested on charges relating to his law firm's involvement with the outlaw bank. Though his case never went to trial, and his protege, Robert Altman, was found not guilty, Clifford's reputation was in ruins. How could such a man come to such an end? What happened? And why? In Friends in High Places, a noted investigative reporter and a chief investigator in the Senate inquiry on BCCI provide the answers. Drawing on original documents, more than a hundred interviews with Clifford's friends and adversaries, and fifty hours of interviews with Clifford himself, the authors reveal the drive and shrewdness that led Clifford to the pinnacle of power - and demonstrate convincingly that his involvement with BCCI was no aberration, but the bitter fruit of seeds planted at the beginning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth book of the Aṅguttara Nikāya, the Collection of the Numbered Discourses of the Buddha, collects 746 suttas or discourses whose subject matter is centered on groups of ten topics. The most frequent are the eight components of the eightfold path expanded to ten and also ten components of ethics. This book is especially thick because of the continuous repetitions upon repetitions with very slight variations. The volume is also notable for including extensive content on monastic discipline. As the most outstanding sutta we have AN 10.26: With Kāḷī. Fierce criticism of the Brahmanical meditation methods called "kasinas" which, in early medieval times, were included by Buddhaghosa in his entrance work to a famous Sinhalese monastery and which today some claim as "effective" methods of meditation within Buddhism. The most interesting suttas in this volume are: AN 10.6: Contemplation. Perceiving without perceiving. One of the most curious things one feels when entering current. AN 10.14: Emotional Sterility. Doubts about the Master cause emotional sterility. AN 10.19: Abodes of the Noble Ones (I). When one stops searching. AN 10.29: Kosala (I). Tremendous criticism of wrong practice. AN 10.31: With Upāli. The reasons for the establishment of the monastic code. AN 10.64: Faith. On those who have entered the stream. AN 10.65: Happiness (I). Family and friends who get together and annoy you. AN 10.76: Three things. A beautiful sutta on renunciations. AN 10.92: Dangers. Teaching on perishability and faith. AN 10.108: Physicians: Interesting sutta on physicians and the list of diseases known and treated with varying degrees of success. This book does not contain false suttas. In summary, this time the arduous and exhaustive work of research and reconstruction in comparative linguistics has been especially dense and thick.

Book excerpt: Many struggle to live a victorious life as a result of their ignorance of the potency, which the Spoken Word carries. Challenges are made to be faced, but it is only revelation and incessant confession of God’s Word that is capable of making any man triumphant. The Spoken Word is 365 days devotional, exploring all areas of life, and revealing the power of God to heal, transform, enrich and bless. This devotional is released by God in this season to satisfy the hunger of men, heal the broken hearted, liberate the captives, and empower the weak. Who would ever believe that the wisest man – Solomon, was born out of the erroneous affair of David and Bathsheba? In this case, the author recounts, “From the shells of total shame, and from the marrows of the utmost disgrace, God can still birth fame” When you think all is over, and when you have given up to an ill fate; God will start something fabulously new in your life.

Book excerpt: This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses the Zohar, the most important book of the Kabbalah, as a late strata of the Midrashic literature. The author concentrates on the 'expanded' biblical stories in the Zohar and on its relationship to the ancient Talmudic Aggadah. The analytical and critical examination of these biblical themes reveals aspects of continuity and change in the history of the old Aggadic story and its way into the Zoharic corpus. The detailed description of this literary process also reveals the world of the authors of the Zohar, their spiritual distress, mystical orientations, and self-consciousness.

Book excerpt: Medieval Europe was a meeting place for the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic civilizations, and the fertile intellectual exchange of these cultures can be seen in the mathematical developments of the time. This sourcebook presents original Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic sources of medieval mathematics, and shows their cross-cultural influences. Most of the Hebrew and Arabic sources appear here in translation for the first time. Readers will discover key mathematical revelations, foundational texts, and sophisticated writings by Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic-speaking mathematicians, including Abner of Burgos's elegant arguments proving results on the conchoid—a curve previously unknown in medieval Europe; Levi ben Gershon’s use of mathematical induction in combinatorial proofs; Al-Mu’taman Ibn Hūd’s extensive survey of mathematics, which included proofs of Heron’s Theorem and Ceva’s Theorem; and Muhyī al-Dīn al-Maghribī’s interesting proof of Euclid’s parallel postulate. The book includes a general introduction, section introductions, footnotes, and references. The Sourcebook in the Mathematics of Medieval Europe and North Africa will be indispensable to anyone seeking out the important historical sources of premodern mathematics.
