Book Synopsis A High-latitude Empirical Model of Scintillation Excursions by : Jules Aarons
Download or read book A High-latitude Empirical Model of Scintillation Excursions written by Jules Aarons and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using observations of the scintillations of beacons from synchronous satellites, a high latitude model of scintillation excursion is being developed. Phase 1 of the development has been completed and is described in this report. Several years of continuous recordings taken at Narssarssuaq, Greenland, Goose Bay, Labrador, and Sagamore Hill, Massachusetts, were reduced. The data base consists of values of 15-min scintillation excursions in dB at 137 MHz. Equations are developed which yield scintillations at this frequency as a function of local time, magnetic index, solar flux, and month of the year. The concept is to predict, at sub-auroral and auroral latitudes, scintillation at this frequency and at higher frequencies. The aim is to give to users an indication of expected scintillation excursion when one predicts magnetic activity and solar radio flux. The equations developed have been checked with one additional set of observations and are being checked with additional data. Phase 2 of this model will incorporate geometrical terms to take account of the propagation angle of the observer vis-a-vis the irregularities and will allow for frequency dependence to be ascertained. In addition, it is expected in Phase 2 to validate the model with additional sets of data, extending the model to auroral latitudes greater than 63 deg. and to polar latitudes. (Author).

Book Synopsis Global Scintillation Model by : Joseph Horace Pope
Download or read book Global Scintillation Model written by Joseph Horace Pope and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A global model for obtaining scintillations was developed at Stanford Research Institute by Fremouw. This model uses a number of input parameters including sunspot number, day of the year, time of day, location of the receiver and transmitter, the frequency to provide an average value of scintillation activity under the specified conditions. The model was later modified by Pope at NOAA/ERL to better represent certain measurements of scintillation activity in the high latitude regions and to include a variation in the magnetic activity index. The model uses the Briggs and Parkin theory appropriate for weak scatter. Certain convenient mathematical forms are assumed for the different regions of the earth. These include the equatorial, mid-latitude, auroral zone, and high latitude boundary regions. The coefficients in these mathematical functions were determined empirically by means of appropriate scintillation activity data that were taken in many different regions of the globe and over different portions of the sunspot cycle. The model is valid only for that frequency domain (VHF, UHF) upon which the observational data were based. The model is described in this report with its uses and limitations. Details of a computer program based on the model that gives scintillation activity as a function of the various input parameters are also provided.
