The first Hebrew grammars published by Christians were modeled after those of the Jewish Rabbins, from whom the knowledge of the Hebrew language was received. Among these, the most distinguished was Reuchlln's Rudimenta linguae Hebraeae (l506), which was used by most learners of the Hebrew until the publication of Munster's grammar (l556).The latter continued in general use until Buxtorf published his Thesaurus (l609), which so far excelled all other works of the kind then extant, that it came into almost universal use. A most important addition was made to the syntax of the Hebrew language, by the noble work of Glass, styled Philologia Sacra and published at Leipsic in 1623. In 1679, Alting of Gronlngen published his Fundamenta punctationis linguae sanctae; and in 1696, Danz of Jena, his Literator Ebraeo-Chaldaeus. Both works were constructed upon the principles of Buxtorf; and for more than half a century, they guided the Hebrew studies of Holland and Germany. These I have continued only as far as the declensions of nouns; for I would advise the student, when he gets thus far, to begin the practice of reading and parsing in the Chrestomathy. Nor should I deem it best, on the first going over, to make him commit any thing more of the Paradigms, than the first one of the regular verb. Let all the rest be learned in the way of practice, gradually, and not by burdening the mind at once with abstract paradigms and all the minutiae of the language. I would refer teacher and learner to my Hebrew Chrestomathy, where, in the introductory remarks to the notes on Part I. And Part II., will be found a full explanation in regard to the method of learning, which I should think it adviseable for the student to pursue. To avoid all loss of time in searching for Paradigms, I have thrown them into a body at the end of the work; which will greatly facilitate the labour of the student. The index at the close of the volume, i have made more full than before, in order to render easy the finding of any thing which the work contains. A few words of explanation may serve to make this clear. There is at the present time a division of opinion among teachers as to the best way of learning a new language. Some insist, especially in the case of a dead language, on a long course of grounding in grammar before anything serious is attempted in the way of reading or speaking. Others seek to minimise the learning of grammar and to push on almost at once to some form of literature. The standpoint adopted in this book is that a certain amount of spade-work is necessary, in the way of learning by heart grammatical forms and usages; but that a good deal of memory-work may be saved by starting the beginner in actual reading as soon as he knows the more elementary grammatical forms. So the student is expected to work through the ordinary classes of nouns to the end of the regular (strong) Verb, before he reads the Old Testa ment; but at that point he is given assistance in starting the Hebrew text, before going on to the second half of the grammar. In this way he becomes accustomed to the sound and sight of many forms before he tries to commit them to memory.
