Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual Hebrew Grammar for the Use of Beginners The following pages are intended for those only who have read or may hereafter read Hebrew with the author. The lessons and rules, though comparatively few and brief, are, I know, sufficient to give an easy and rapid insight into the general formation of the language. Some years' experience in teaching, and the favorable opinions of those whom I have had the pleasure of teaching, convince me that with proper attention to the following rules under my instruction, (or the instruction of any of my pupils), any one desirous to become acquainted with this language may be enabled in a short time and with little trouble, to read with much pleasure and 'satisfaction; and to use advantageously a larger work on Hebrew Grammar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Hebrew Grammar for the Use of Beginners The following compilation is strictly what it professes to be, "An Introduction" to Hebrew Grammar. No language can be acquired by means of a compendium. But experience has taught me, that a large and comprehensive grammar may impede the progress of beginners, especially when the chief part of their time and strength is necessarily devoted to other subjects. For such the following pages may serve as a practical outline. The original intention was that it should not exceed two sheets. But having learned that the study of Hebrew was to be introduced into King's College School, it seemed necessary to add more complete tables. Mr. Duncan obligingly allowed me the use of the stereotype plates of the tables of verbs, reprinted from GeseniuS' "Lehrgebaude," by the Rev. Dr. Lee. The larger Grammars recommended for the study of the advanced student are those of the Rev. Dr. Lee, Professor Ewald, and the late Dr. Gesenius. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar The following pages are an attempt to supply a want suggested by the experience of two Lecturers for the first part of the Theological Tripos at Cambridge. A few words of explanation may serve to make this clear. There is at the present time a division of opinion among teachers as to the best way of learning a new language. Some insist, especially in the case of a dead language, on a long course of grounding in grammar before anything serious is attempted in the way of reading or speaking. Others seek to minimise the learning of grammar and to push on almost at once to some form of literature. The standpoint adopted in this book is that a certain amount of spade-work is necessary, in the way of learning by heart grammatical forms and usages; but that a good deal of memory-work may be saved by starting the beginner in actual reading as soon as he knows the more elementary grammatical forms. So the student is expected to work through the ordinary classes of nouns to the end of the regular (strong) Verb, before he reads the Old Testa ment; but at that point he is given assistance in starting the Hebrew text, before going on to the second half of the grammar. In this way he becomes accustomed to the sound and sight of many forms before he tries to commit them to memory. A smaller type has Often been made use of for subordinate matter but very little has been inserted in the body of the work for mere reference. In the Exercises and in the illustrations of rules, I have sought to confine myself to strictly Biblical expressions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hebrew Grammar As in many respects this grammar differs from other grammars, the plan which has been adopted requires a few explanations. Although modern works on Hebrew Grammar have been consulted by me, I did not think it advisable blindly to follow them. Experience has taught me that this would be far from prudent. The greatest scholars sometimes venture to create rules which have no sufiicient basis and even to quote examples which only exist in their imagination. Most curious instances of this could be given. But for what purpose? In spite of a few inaccuracies they remain men who by reason of their learning and hard work are entitled to our respect. I merely wish, therefore, to point out in few words in what particulars this manual follows a more or less independent course, and the motives which have induced me to do so.
