Book excerpt: I always had a keen interest for a picture that stood slanted on the mantel of my childhood home. It was a centerpiece, so it was difficult to not do just that, but there was a deeper connection that took place; maybe it was the art of the way its purpose was to be hung on the wall, but there it stood in defiance of that certain standard. Or maybe it was the way it was so intricately drawn: the way that every time you were to look, it revealed another line that you hadn’t noticed before. The one fact I knew for certain is that the caption incessantly repeated in my mind every day of my life: “A Heap of Livin’”. At the time, I didn’t quite know the definition, or rather the significance, but it came to me one day, as I reflected upon it with open eyes and experience, wondering what new thing I would come to discover that day. That is when I decided that my poetry was the very embodiment of a painting I held so close to my heart and the sanguine idea of this book was borne.

Book excerpt: His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teaching-a beautiful and accessible presentation of the time-honored path to enlightenment–is one of the world's great spiritual treasures. The Joy of Living and Dying in Peace underscores the importance of "practice"-of awareness through meditation, compassion, patience, and effort—in lending rich and joyous meaning to this lifetime, and so to our passage to the next. His Holiness the Dalai Lama offers his thoughts on achieving a meaningful life and death. At the heart of his eloquent presentation is this lesson: by cultivating compassion, wisdom, and positive thought and action-in short, by living a good life-we can approach death without fear or regret, and welcome our passage and rebirth. He teaches that the way to a peaceful death is to live a meaningful life by practicing love and compassion. The book also provide straightforward lessons on how to embrace death and impermanence, which ultimately leads to a life of peace, joy and spiritual fulfillment.

Book Synopsis The Art of Living Chinese Proverbs and Wisdom by : Hong Yingming
Download or read book The Art of Living Chinese Proverbs and Wisdom written by Hong Yingming and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a contemporary look at the popular, 400 year-old text Vegetable Roots Discourse. Ming Dynasty scholar and philosopher Hong Yingming wrote many books, but only Vegetable Roots Discourse has survived into the 21st century—remaining a widely studied text in China, Japan and Korea. In it, Yingming offers 360 observations and proverbs about life, human nature, heaven, earth and more. These witty and timeless sentiments derive from Yingming's own informal compilation of thoughts, as well as the understandings of Buddhism, Daoism (Taoism) and Confucianism. In The Art of Living Chinese Proverbs and Wisdom, Professor Wu Yansheng and Dr. Ding Liangyan have provided original commentaries for each of the 360 snippets of wisdom. These help readers to expand their understanding of the meaning behind the original text, whilst demonstrating its significance in a contemporary context.

Book Synopsis Love in Education & the Art of Living by : Becky L. Noël Smith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common for teachers and students of education to feel disheartened about the profession and their own aims and purposes once they become conscious of the dehumanizing tendencies of the schooling institution. As teacher educators, we have also known many students who, after studying critical perspectives aimed at exposing the power and privilege flowing through the public schools, then look to us with the question, “Where’s the hope?” Our attempt to answer our students’ questions has led us to consider what beauty and love in education look like. Where can it be seen, and how can we bring this forward so it can be instructive to those who are faced with similar questions about the incredibly important craft of teaching? This collection of narratives, essays, and poetic expressions includes the perspectives of students and educators who, in varying ways, express gratitude toward those who came before them and a deep desire to keep the faith alive. The authors share narrative accounts of someone or something in the public schools or learning experiences in general that inspired and nurtured the passionate desire to achieve goods internal to some shared practice – that is, some art at living – such that there was a transformative readjustment to the very nature of experience itself. We share with readers the stories and intellectual habits that have fueled us, inspired us, and that continue to push us to engage in the practice of cultivating educational dynamics that are meaningful and transformative for ourselves, our students, and our communities. The book concludes with an exploration into how teachers might not only root their craft, but the habit of love in general, in a sense of freedom.

Download or read book Arts of Living written by Kurt Spellmeyer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts of Living presents a social history of the humanities and a proposal for the future that places creativity at the heart of higher education. Engaging with the debate launched by Allan Bloom, Harold Bloom, Bill Readings, John Guillory, and others, Kurt Spellmeyer argues that higher education needs to abandon the "culture wars" if it hopes to address the major crises of the century: globalization, the degradation of the environment, the widening chasm between rich and poor, and the clash of cultures.
