Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emigration in 21st-Century India is the first definitive exposition of contemporary Indian labour migration. The book provides a comprehensive appraisal of the policies, legislation and institutional architecture governing emigration at both federal and state levels. It posits that, geographically, emigration is now a more inclusive, pan-India phenomenon with many distinct features. It draws critical attention to the multiple dualities in Indian emigration, showing how the artificial distinction between a universal pravasi (‘expatriate’ or ‘migrant’) and a restricted aam pravasi (‘common emigrant’) distorts emigration governance. On the basis of extensive data from the Kerala Migration Survey (KMS) and National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) Rounds, it projects the emerging profile of the emigrant from new source states as also the likely number of migrants by 2021, drawing cross-country comparisons where appropriate. The work will be invaluable to scholars of migration and diaspora studies, economics, development studies and sociology, as well as policy makers, administrators, academics, and non-governmental organisations in the field.

Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook on Crime and International Migration is concerned with the various relationships between migration, crime and victimization that have informed a wide criminological scholarship often driven by some of the original lines of inquiry of the Chicago School. Historically, migration and crime came to be the device by which Criminology and cognate fields sought to tackle issues of race and ethnicity, often in highly problematic ways. However, in the contemporary period this body of scholarship is inspiring scholars to produce significant evidence that speaks to some of the biggest public policy questions and debunks many dominant mythologies around the criminality of migrants. The Routledge Handbook on Crime and International Migration is also concerned with the theoretical, empirical and policy knots found in the relationship between regular and irregular migration, offending and victimization, the processes and impact of criminalization, and the changing role of criminal justice systems in the regulation and enforcement of international mobility and borders. The Handbook is focused on the migratory ‘fault lines’ between the Global North and Global South, which have produced new or accelerated sites of state control, constructed irregular migration as a crime and security problem, and mobilized ideological and coercive powers usually reserved for criminal or military threats. Offering a strong international focus and comprehensive coverage of a wide range of border, criminal justice and migration-related issues, this book is an important contribution to criminology and migration studies and will be essential reading for academics, students and practitioners interested in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic rise in international migration over the past thirty years has brought a tide of new immigrants to the United States from Asia, South America, and other parts of the globe. Their arrival has reverberated throughout American society, prompting an outpouring of scholarship on the causes and consequences of the new migrations. The Handbook of International Migration gathers the best of this scholarship in one volume to present a comprehensive overview of the state of immigration research in this country, bringing coherence and fresh insight to this fast growing field. The contributors to The Handbook of International Migration—a virtual who's who of immigration scholars—draw upon the best social science theory and demographic research to examine the effects and implications of immigration in the United States. The dramatic shift in the national background of today's immigrants away from primarily European roots has led many researchers to rethink traditional theories of assimilation, and has called into question the usefulness of making historical comparisons between today's immigrants and those of previous generations. Part I of the Handbook examines current theories of international migration, including the forces that motivate people to migrate, often at great financial and personal cost. Part II focuses on how immigrants are changed after their arrival, addressing such issues as adaptation, assimilation, pluralism, and socioeconomic mobility. Finally, Part III looks at the social, economic, and political effects of the surge of new immigrants on American society. Here the Handbook explores how the complex politics of immigration have become intertwined with economic perceptions and realities, racial and ethnic divisions, and international relations. A landmark compendium of richly nuanced investigations, The Handbook of International Migration will be the major reference work on recent immigration to this country and will enhance the development of a truly interdisciplinary field of international migration studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those involved in family and sexual relationships today face a bewildering variety of medico-legal dilemmas. These are encountered from as early as the preconception state of the embryo and continue throughout the period of child raising until the status of the mature minor is achieved. This book dissects a wide range of legal, medical and ethical issues surrounding reproduction and the parental relationship with the resultant child. Questions posed in the various sections include: what constitutes sexual intercourse, what are the implications of contraception and sterilization, is the abortion issues dead?. Is there a right to reproduce and, if so, how is this applied to the modern methods of assisted reproduction?. Is surrogate motherhood acceptable or workable?. The concept of fetal rights is explored and specific attention is given to the management of defective neonates in the light of recent judicial decisions. Other chapters look at the parent/child relationship in respect of medical treatment and the book concludes with a review of the interfamilial protection of young children under both the civil and the criminal law. Many of the views expressed are novel in that they represent those of a medical doctor exploring the legal field. It is neither a conventional book on family law nor one on medical law; rather, it draws on both to examine a specific area which affects both in a particularly significant way. Both statute and case law have been extensively updated since the publication of the first edition.
