Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Infant Feeding The great importance of this subject can be real ized only when we consider a few statistical facts. Statistics as we know are proverbially misleading, proving usually what is the wish of the compiler; however, only through these means can we make comparisons. The percentage of children dying during the first two years of life has been variously estimated and although these estimates are far from being accurate they bring us to two very im portant and shocking conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Feeding The systematic attempt to place the nourishment of the infant upon a truly scientific basis was first begun by Czerny and Keller when they published their epoch-making book in 1905. Previous to the appearance of this volume, though much scientific and practical work had been done on the nutrition of the infant, it was all more or less frag mentary, and there had been no extended attempt to sepa rate the good from the bad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Infant Feeding Iibut rather to amalgamate the best points taught in this country and abroad into what I hope IS a homogeneous whole. It 1s desirable, of course, to make any subject as simple and as easily understandable as possible, and infant feeding need not be made complicated, but, on the other hand, any presenta tion which does not explain underlying processes and the basis of symptoms is not enough for the thinking practitioner of today. As I heard an eminent Philadelphia pediatrist say not long ago, there is at present a tendency to try to make infant feeding so easy for the physician that there is a chance of for getting whether or not the methods used may be suitable for the baby. The general standard of infant feeding in America has, however, improved greatly in the last ten years owing to the increased interest that general practitioners have taken in it, which is shown by the continually increasing numbers coming for instruction to the large post-graduate schools, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Medicine and the New York post-graduate School. To such men as this I respectfully offer this book, and sincerely hope that they may find it of value and interest. I wish especially to thank Dr. W. W. Howell for so kindly consenting to write the chapter on Premature Infants; Dr. R W. Lovett and other members of the staff for permitting me to use several pictures and Roentgen-ray plates taken from their cases in the Children's Hospital; Mr. J. V. Footman for kindly making the prints and taking many pictures, and the publishers for their many courtesies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of the Infant In his endeavour to make his practice as exact and scientific as possible, the author was at one time greatly discouraged by the fact that infant feeding apparently presented almost insuperable obstacles to its rational management in health, and to exact diagnosis and treatment in the presence of disorder. While this applied, to some extent, to the management of breast feeding, it applied with greater force to substitute feeding. In hospital and private practice he was only too familiar with the various attempts to meet the requirements, and had frequent opportunities of testing the results of practically every method at all commonly used. But there were many failures, and, what was even more unsatisfactory, the 'successes' were achieved by means so essentially empirical that they taught no lesson for the future. It must be confessed that others were satisfied where the author was greatly discontent. For it was said to be unreasonable to expect that 'artificial feeding' should be so conducted that its results could be at all comparable with those of breast feeding. This attitude seemed to be the more serious in view of the number of women unable or unwilling to nurse their infants. It was under these circumstances that the author turned to the work of Dr. T.M. Rotch, of Boston. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Food and Infant Feeding From various causes, it happens that a large percentage of infants are deprived of their natural nourishment, and it becomes necessary to resort to some substitute to sustain life. This deprivation of their natural food is sometimes complete, but more often it is only partial. It is difficult to say whether this percentage of infants deprived of mothers' milk is on the increase or not. Judging from the number of so-called Infant Foods on the market, the number of children who derive at least a part-of their sustenance from this artificial source must be much greater than is commonly supposed. In many cases, no doubt, it is absolutely impossible for the child to obtain nourish ment from the mother. Under such circumstances, of course resort must be had to some other food. Whenever the food is other than that provided by nature, too much care cannot be exercised in se lecting that which most resembles, in its chemical and physiological properties, that most suitable of all infant foods - mothers' milk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant-Feeding Its Principles and Practice This manual is designed to supply the practitioner with a reference hand-book, of moderate size, in which he may find an exposition of the present theory and practice of infant feeding. The material here presented can only be secured by reading a vast journalistic literature, which is extremely conflicting in its statements and of little practical use, without extensive sifting. In giving some five hundred literary references I have endeavored to select the articles that are most valuable and accessible, sometimes regardlessof priority. These references do not, of course, include a tithe of the immense literature on this subject, but the reader will find most of the leading articles of the last decade duly noted. Therefore, we would consider the book as incomplete and of comparatively little value, especially for the farmer for whom it is mainly intended, if the prescriptions were omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simplified Infant Feeding: With Seventy-Five Illustrative Cases Extensive experience in teaching post-graduate students the subject of infant feeding has shown the need of something concrete in the form of a book that will tell the busy practitioner just how to feed the different babies with whom he comes in contact day after day. There has been so much written upon the theory of infant feeding that the general practitioner is lost in its mazes, since the theories are constantly changing and eminent pediatricians differ so widely in their ideas upon the subject. That is the reason that "theory" has been left out of this book as much as it has been possible to do so, using facts and rules where they can be made to apply. The book that tells in detail just how to feed an infant is of much more assistance to a physician than one which deals in generalities. There seems to be much objection to the words "method" and "system" in describing infant feeding. It is very popular to say that "every case is a law unto itself." Such a statement tells nothing and is, moreover, not true. In every other branch of medicine, we have a definite method of procedure, and while it is true that there are individual peculiarities of infants, they may he classified to a certain extent, at least, as the author has undertaken to do in this work. Dr. Abraham Jacobi in taking issue with the statement that to speak of a "method" of infant feeding is taking a distinct step backward, said, "It is possible to be guided by the rule. Not every case needs to be fed from the individual standpoint from the beginning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Infant Feeding and Allied Topics: For Physicians and Students The author's purpose in publishing a work upon "Infant Feeding and Allied Topics" is to meet the many requests received from his students and from his medical colleagues who have honored him with! their confidence. The contents will be found to be largely clinical and practical, and to embody the author's personal experience with the problems presented. Theorizing and the presentation of a medley of views of different authorities have been studiously avoided. Credit has not always been given for views expressed which are not original, although the attempt has been made to do so where the fact stated is eminently new and, as yet, has not become a part of common medical knowledge. Quotations and references have been avoided as much as possible, as they are time-consuming and generally annoying, distracting the mind of the reader from the text. In not a few instances the author has indulged in the repetition of certain facts and statements. This has been done largely for the sake of emphasis and to insure the individual completeness of the presentation of the particular topic under discussion, and also to avoid references and cross-references. A serious attempt has been made to emphasize the importance of breast feeding and the digestive problems which present themselves in this class of patients.
