Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of German Grammar The subject matter has been arranged topically, and not in the form of lessons. For reviews and for convenience of reference this plan should prove most serviceable. Abundant examples are given in the text to illustrate the various points of grammar, and, in addi tion, English exercises to be translated into German are given in the back part of the book. The list of nouns given under sections 322 - 339, will, it is hoped, help to simplify vowel mutation and the declension of nouns. The Appendix contains a new treatment of the declension of nouns, which may appeal to many teachers as a simple and practical way of presenting this rather difficult subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar IN preparing this book I have tried to meet the needs -of those who already have some acquaintance with Ger man and with the elementary facts of English grammar. While this assumption that the reader possesses a certain minimum amount of knowledge has not relieved me of the necessity of discussing the most rudimentary matters, such, for example, as the declension of the definite article, it has enabled me to dispense with many explanations and definitions. It has also guided me in the treatment and arrangement of the materials of the grammar. The first part contains a succinct, but I hope suflicient, ac count of the inflections of the language, this being the phase of the subject which I can presume to be best known by any one who uses the book. The second part passes on to a relatively more extended discussion of the syntax. The consideration of the formation of words has been car ried over to the third part. This is a departure from the usual order of arrangement, but seems to me to be justi fied by the fact that every one who learns a foreign lan guage is, at the beginning, more vitally interested in the inflection and use of words than in their derivation. The two sizes of type used throughout the book reflect my opinion, probably often little better than a guess, of the relative importance of the matters discussed. Careful distinction of the contents of the book by variety of type, according to their degree of immediate importance, has been attempted throughout. Especially, I have meant to put into the largest type (sm. Pica) just about so much as the scholar ought to learn carefully and thoroughly in his first course of grammar-lessons, preparatory to reading. This a class should acquire, according to the age and capacity and previous training of its members, in from twelve to twenty-five lessons; and should then at once be put into reading, while the grammar is taken up again, and such part of what was before omitted is learned as the judgment of the intelligent teacher shall direct. It is solely as auxiliary to the first course of lessons that the Exercises are intended - to furnish, namely, to the teacher the opportunity of drilling his pupils in the practical application of the more important rules and principles while they are learning them, or gaining practice in parsing, subject by sub ject, instead of leaving the whole work to be taken up at once when reading is begun. While believing that they will be found valuable in this way, I would not press their use, but would leave it to each one's decision whether to employ or neglect them. Nothing has been put in the largest type after the subject of conjugation is finished, nor anything anywhere in syntax: the main principles of construction, and the use of particles, are sufficiently alike in English and German to allow the pupil to begin reading without having studied them especially in German. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of German Grammar Such is the theory of this book. Nothing has been inserted that cannot be kept constantly before the pupil; nothing has been intentionally omitted which should be kept there. Some points may seem essential that are not to be found but they are so clearly logical developments of what has been stated, the pupil in following his own judgment would be so sure to get them right, that it seemed a waste of time to discuss them. Then, too, cer tain subjects have intentionally not been treated exhaustively, so as not to confuse the slower pupil, or to deprive the teacher of an opportunity to add interest to the recitation by developing the point and giving the brighter pupils additional food for thought, while the rest are busied with what has already been given them. It will be observed that there are no notes; sentences have intentionally been simplified so that the pupil could do them without aid, that he might not be impressed from the very start with how much he did not know, and with the vast number of irregularities in the language. The best way to interest the pupil is to give him something that he can do, which has been the constant aim of this book. That the sentences are less valuable because not quite so idiomatic, no one will assert, if he believe in the disciplinary value of thorough linguistic training. It appears in the author's Modem German as an appendix. It is so used there because the author believes in the importance of the student's seeing from time to time whole declensions and conjugations as completed topics and the entire treatment of points of syntax in a connected form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of German Grammar The method of using the book is too plain to require long explanation; and the principal steps of general method are given under How to learn a foreign language. The grammatical part will be found to contain all that is needed for a class of beginners, and no time need be wasted in dictating grammar notes. The amount of grammar practice must be left to the teacher, who will do well to refer to the matter given as frequently as possible. Certainly instruction in German is a waste of time without some solid knowledge of grammar, unless the object is merely to acquire a small stock of conversational phrases. The answers to the questions are easy to find; and as there are over eight hundred of them, the teacher and the student are at liberty to select the easiest for a first semester, adding the rest when repeating, and supplementing them by as many more as may be feasible. In many cases the answers, when put together, will be found to form a tolerable composition on the subject of the questionaire. An effort has been made to aid the student of the language by adding necessary historical remarks and by furnishing complete lists of important classes of nouns, adjectives, verbs and the like. Exercises. Particular attention has been given to the Exercises in this book. In the first place, all exercises have been constructed in the form of connected discourse, thus encouraging the habit of natural, logical thought and discussion in the language from the beginning. Much time is wasted by the student who learns disconnected sentences without making the language a vehicle of his own thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of German Grammar In every branch of knowledge there are essentials which should be thoroughly learned, yes, memorized, by the student; and he is Often puzzled to know just what those essentials are to which he should cling. This book contains a brief outline of the parts of speech, of the word-order, of case-constructions, and of the subjunctive mode; in fact, it gives those things which even student of German should master sometime early in his course. It is not intended that this book should take the place of a complete German grammar, because many details had to be omitted, to keep it within the bounds of essentials. As the parts of speech are given in regular order, an index was not considered necessary, and is not inserted. While the outline is my own, I have received valuable hints from the excellent grammars of Whit ney, Joynes and Thomas. My aim throughout has been to enable the student to grasp the subject more easily and thoroughly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
