Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Konkani is a modern Indo-Aryan language and a state language of the Indian state Goa. Until recently, it was considered a dialect of Marathi, but it is now considered an independent language. Konkani has several varieties, including the Manglore variety spoken in the south of Goa, the Gawdi variety spoken by the Gawda ethnic group, and the Goan (Panaji) variety. The latter is the focus of this description, and is the variety used in schools, media and state administration. The book provides a descriptive linguistic analysis of Konkani based on spoken and written data collected by the author during extensive fieldwork. The linguistic features of Konkani phonology, morphology, word-formation and syntax are described in detail, and where significant, compared with the Manglore and Gawdi varieties. Since Konkani is undergoing standardisation, and since it has close contact with Marathi, significant similarities and differences between the two languages are also discussed. Konkani has the honour of being the subject of the oldest European grammatical work on any Indian language: Thomas Stephens’ Arte da Lingoa Canarim published in 1640. This grammar is thus the most recent addition to the long tradition of Konkani grammars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades there has been a significant amount of research and publication concerning the sociolinguistics of South Asian languages. Language and Society in South Asia is the first major attempt to assess the impact of this new literature. It exposits the methodological and theoretical assumptions of sociolinguistic descriptions of south Asian languages, and contrasts them with the assumptions of earlier characterizations of these languages. An important feature of this book is its detailed examination of numerous schools of linguistic analysis within which most past descriptive work on South Asian languages has been carried out. This is done in language accessible both to the professional linguist and to non-linguists interested in social aspects of language use in South Asia. Among the topics treated in this book are traditional taxonomies of South Asian languages, South Asia as a linguistic area, social dialectology, bi- and multilingualism in South Asia, pidginization, creolization, and South Asian English, ethnographic semantics, and the ethnography of speaking. The work also contains an extensive bibliography of the scholarly literature pertinent to the study of South Asian languages in their social contexts.

D. research students, research guides, writers of research papers or research articles, teachers, scholars of literature and literary criticism, students of linguistics and all those who wish to know more about research in literature and languages. Being Indo-Centric, rather than Euro-Centric, it discusses the basic questions of research, such as: How to select a topic? How to prepare the initial synopsis? How to prepare the detailed outline of the thesis or the paper? How to develop the argument or the point of view? How to cite references? How to prepare a bibliography and the final synopsis? And how to face the Viva? It discusses fundamental questions like what is to be searched in literature and languages and why. It is clear in views, highly informative in its content, lucid and enjoyable in its style and a recent statement on the subject concerning globalisation and national development. For foreign readers, this book provides an Indian perspective of literature and research in literature and languages with reference to the concept of ‘world literature’ in the process of globalisation of human life.
