Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Requirements for Admission to the Colleges of the United States Several motives suggested the compilation of this little book. When students wisely conclude to make a college education their ambition and aim, they very natu rally send for one or a dozen college catalogues, to ascertain their requirements and other information which will enable them to decide what college to enter; but the great mass of facts which these catalogues contain often tends to confuse the mind, and to render of little avail the trouble occasioned and expense incurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical and Critical Discussion of College Admission Requirements IN order to discuss intelligently any problem relative to the American college it is necessary to devote some attention to the unique character of that institution, and to the traditions which determined it. These conditions are most clearly exemplified in the development Of Harvard University. In the first place, Harvard was the first college established on this Side of the Atlantic, and thus became the connecting link in the transit of learning from the Old World to the New. Sec ondly, Harvard was the onlv college in the country for over half a century, and was consequently the most closely identified with the early development of colonial life. Thirdly, Harvard may rightly be called the mother of American colleges, so potent has been her in uence in determining the character Of subsequent colleges and the direction of collegiate study in this country. In short, the history of Harvard College in itself comprises a complete account of the development of American university problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admission to College by Certificate As long as the question of admission to college by certificate 4 is looked upon merely as the formal transfer of individuals from one institution to another, and no more, just so long will the system be adjudged unsatisfactory. The adoption of the system means, usually, the transfer Of responsibility for deter mining standards from the higher to the lower part of the system. The lower part, however willing it may be, is not pre pared to bear the burden alone. The college cannot afford to shift the control of its own standards to high schools unless it is willing to assist the schools in maintaining those standards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Requirements for the Bachelor's Degree Sir: The liberal arts curricula in the colleges and the universities of the United States have undergone significant changes in recent years. To some extent, these changes have been accentuated by the recent war. At the same time greater attention has been given to the relationships between secondary schools and higher institutions, particularly with respect to college entrance requirements. In order to facilitate the work of college educators and administrators in formulating curricula leading to the cultural bachelors degrees, and in making readjustments in college entrance requirements when necessary, I recommend the publication of the bulletin entitled "Requirements for the Bachelor's Degree," by Dr. Walton C. John, Specialist in charge of Land-Grant College Statistics in the Bureau of Education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Better not educate the man' at all than sharpen all his powers and then leave him without a conscience 'to direct him. Conscience is the guardian of the man, and righteous ness is the teacher of conscience. Righteousness is the finishing touch to the picture, the final tempering of the tool, the governor of the engine, the compass of the ship. What is man worth without a ten der conscience P What is education worth without righteousness Just as much as the picture without the finishing touch, the tool with 'out temper, the engine without governor, the Ship without compass. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of a common American culture has been in retreat for a generation or more. Arguments emphasizing difference have discredited the grand synthetic studies that marginalized groups and perspectives at odds with the master narrative. Surface and Depth: The Quest for Legibility in American Culture is a fresh attempt to revitalize an interpretive overview. It seeks to recuperate a central tradition while simultaneously recognizing how much that tradition has occluded. The book focuses on the American zeal for knowing or making accessible. This compulsion has a long history stretching back to Puritan anti-monasticism; to the organization of the landscape into clearly delineated gridwork sections; and to the creation of a national government predicted on popular vigilance. It can be observed in the unmatched American receptivity to the motion pictures and to psychoanalysis: the first a technology of visual surfaces, the second a technique for plumbing interior depths. Popular literature, especially the Western and the detective story, has reinscribed the cult of legibility. Each genre features a plot that drives through impediments to transparent resolution. Elite literature has adopted a more contradictory stance. The landmarks of the American canon typically embark on journeys of discovery while simultaneously renouncing the possibility of full disclosure (as in Ahab's doomed pursuit of the "inscrutable" white whale). The notorious modernism of American literature, its precocious attraction to obscurity and multiple meaning, evolved as an effort to block the intrusions of a hegemonic cultural dynamic. The American passion for knowability has been prolific of casualties. Acts of making visible have always entailed the erasure and invisibility of racial minorities. American society has also routinely trespassed on customary areas of reserve. A nation intolerant of the hidden paradoxically pioneered the legal concept of privacy, but it did so in reaction to its own invasive excesses.
