Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of modern American men want to eat better but don't have the time to count calories. They are turned off by the prospect of forever giving up burgers and fries and confused by the media's conflicting health-related messages. A Guy's Gotta Eat proves that healthy eating is a surprisingly easy option. Self-taught nutritionist and weekend warrior triathlete Russ Klettke, along with sports nutritionist Deanna Conte, provide all the tips and tools men need to start eating better, from nutrition facts to advice about cooking for a hot date. Included are shopping lists of the 60 grocery items every man should have in his kitchen—and "combinations" (rather than traditional recipes) which make whipping up good, healthy food easier than ever. The authors make smart eating automatic and simple, whether one is cooking at home or dining out. Loosely based on the immensely popular Zone diet and focusing on fruits, vegetables, proteins, and "good" carbs, A Guy's Gotta Eat is a whole-life guide for men who say, "I should eat better but don't know how."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still today, I can hear my mom telling me as a young boy, "It wouldn't hurt you to learn how to cook. Someday, you might need to cook for yourself." I don't know if she could tell back then I would spend extended periods of my life alone, or if she could see back then that there was a closet chef within me. Either way, as with most things she said, she was right. I did find myself in need of cooking for myself during various stints of being alone throughout life. But what I would find out in the end, was that I love to cook. Not only has it become a hobby, but I really enjoy trying new recipes from various cultures around the world. There are so many extremely flavorful recipes I'd never have known had I not had the courage and ability to try. Mom and I were always close from my earliest years. I remember fondly so many occasions that I was with her in the kitchen. I thought then it was because I liked being near her, or that she'd let me sample whatever she was cooking. Both were likely true, but through all that watching, I must have picked up something. I think it was a love of cooking. I'm sure many men are living alone, who think they can't cook. What a shame, being locked into eating all meals at restaurants. While it's true that I've not been too social throughout my years, I think cooking and eating at home provides so much higher culinary gratification in the enhancement of self-esteem, as well as being able to enjoy some of the best foods available - anything you want, when you want it! So, here we go, guys. A guy's gotta eat, and you can do it yourself - so much better than you might think!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chuck T-Bone is a private detective—A P.I. A gumshoe. A dick. He also happens to be a zombie, in a world where the zombies have taken over, and “fresh meat” is a rare commodity. Where you go into a diner to order an elbow joint with a side of toes. But nothing’s really changed—the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, at least until they fall apart altogether. When a curvaceous member of a famous crime family walks into his office, he’s forced to reopen a case he’d just as soon forget. It’s the one that introduced him to the dame who stole his heart—and got him killed. Trouble is, if it happens again, this time it’s for good. It’s gory goodness for fans of The Big Sleep and Shaun of the Dead, with a dash of Zombieland thrown in for good measure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted baseball historian Norman L. Macht brings together a wide‑ranging collection of baseball voices from the Deadball Era through the 1970s, including nine Hall of Famers, who take the reader onto the field, into the dugouts and clubhouses, and inside the minds of both players and managers. These engaging, wide-ranging oral histories bring surprising revelations--both highlights and lowlights--about their careers, as they revisit their personal mental scrapbooks of the days when they played the game. Not all of baseball's best stories are told by its biggest stars, especially when the stories are about those stars. Many of the storytellers you'll meet in They Played the Game are unknown to today's fans: the Red Sox's Charlie Wagner talks about what it was like to be Ted Williams's roommate in Williams's rookie year; the Dodgers' John Roseboro recounts his strategy when catching for Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax; former Yankee Mark Koenig recalls batting ahead of Babe Ruth in the lineup, and sometimes staying out too late with him; John Francis Daley talks about batting against Walter Johnson; Carmen Hill describes pitching against Babe Ruth in the 1927 World Series.
