Download or read book A Review of the HHS Family Planning Program written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-08-07 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Review of the HHS Family Planning Program provides a broad evaluation of the Title X family planning program since its establishment in 1970. The program successfully provides family planning services to its target audience of low-income individuals, but there is room for improvement. While the program's core goals are apparent, a secondary set of changing priorities has emerged without a clear, evidence-based strategic process. Also, funding for the program has increased in actual dollars, but has not kept pace with inflation or increased costs. Several aspects of the program's structure could be improved to increase the ability of Title X to meet the needs of its target population. At the same time, the extent to which the program meets those needs cannot be assessed without a greater capacity for long-term data collection. A Review of the HHS Family Planning Program recommends several specific steps to enhance the management and improve the quality of the program, as well as to demonstrate its direct contribution to important end results, such as reducing rates of unintended pregnancy, cervical cancer, and infertility. The book will guide the Office of Family Planning toward improving the effectiveness of the program. Other parties who will find the research and recommendations valuable include programs receiving Title X funding from the Office of Family Planning, policy makers, researchers, and professional organizations.

This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither legalization of abortion nor scientific and political advances in contraception and abortion ensure that training and research in family planning are routinely integrated into medical education. Without integration, subsequent generations of healthcare professionals are not prepared to incorporate evidence-based family planning into their practices, teaching, or research. Omission of this crucial component prevents the cultural and professional normalization of an often stigmatized and embattled aspect of women's health. Taking the successful US-based Ryan and Family Planning Fellowship programs as templates for training, teaching, and academic leadership, this book describes the integration of family planning and pregnancy termination into curricula with an international outlook. With an evidence- and systems-based approach, the book is a unique and practical guide to inspire and train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of information gathered from 116 countries to provide technical assistance for family planning and reproductive health programs. The topics chosen embrace a continuum from the demographic context to past and future contraceptive use, service burdens, and a selection of alternative action objectives. Chapter 1 provides an overview showing the disparate geographic pattern of reproductive health problems as a backdrop to the rest of the volume. Chapter 2 uses over 220 national surveys to describe contraceptive use, including trends by method and source. Chapter 3 introduces a special projection method to anticipate future contraceptive use, again by method, with estimates of commodity needs. Chapter 4 summarizes demands on services due to growing population numbers, regarding safe motherhood services and the burdens of maternal mortality, abortion, and HIV/AIDS. Finally, chapter 5 considers four action goals, including full access to contraception, satisfaction of unmet need and intention to use a method, achievement of the desired fertility level, and attainment of replacement fertility. Tables and charts support these various topics.

Documenting a revolution in both theory and practice, Johns Hopkins University experts show that communication leads the way to healthy reproductive health and family planning behavior. They explain why communication makes so much difference and how communication programs can be made to work. This book presents a compilation of lessons learned by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and its partners over 15 years of developing and implementing family planning communication projects campaigns in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Near East. An introductory essay provides an overview of family planning and communication worldwide and outlines the role of theory-based communication programs. The main part of the book presents lessons learned in the field about the process of designing and carrying out family planning communication projects. More than 60 lessons are presented, with descriptions and analysis of projects illustrating each lesson. A final essay explores the current and future challenges confronting family planning educators and other public health communicators.
