Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of Heraldry Within the last twenty years there have been published some of the very best works that have ever appeared, connected with the subject of Heraldry, and its kindred science genealogy. Rolls of arms of undoubted authenticity, accompanied by notes devoid of those flights of imagination with which the old annotators were wont to lard their works upon these subjects; treatises upon particular branches of the science, and many excellent works on the peerage and different ranks, and some genealogies of the best kind have appeared. From this we might be led to believe that a revival of the ancient taste in these matters had taken place, yet I am inclined to think that this supply, so good too of its kind, falls far short of that upon most other subjects, which the increased demand for information has created. Yet it were a pity that a science so cherished by our forefathers, and so useful to the historian, the architect, and the lawyer, should be so neglected, and I might even say despised, in this utilitarian age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Heraldry: A Concise Description of the Several Terms Used and Containing a Dictionary of Every Designation in the Science The great revival which has taken place in the study and appreciation of the Science of Heraldry, and the wider and more intelligent interest now taken in armory, has induced the publisher to issue a new and revised edition of this work. This opportunity has been taken to enlarge and improve the Dictionary of Heraldic Terms, and to cut out much of the repetition which was contained in the opening chapters of the previous editions. The space thus gained has been used to give a larger and, in the light of modern research, more correct view of the Origin of Arms, and to add chapters on the Law and Right to Arms and on the Heraldic Executive. The chapter formerly given on Precedence has been entirely superseded by inserting the tables now in use in England and in Scotland, and the whole book has been so revised and rewritten as to form practically a new work. Though in the past the science has suffered much from the absurd and pedantic origins assigned not only to it but to the armorial achievements of various families, its use as an aid to historical research has been long proved and recognised. How often has the date of the foundation of some ancient castle or abbey been discovered or a portrait identified from the armorial bearings thereon, and many an important point in genealogy elucidated, by the charges borne by the individual members of the family explaining their matrimonial alliances, their position as cadets, or even the origin of the house itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry; Ancient and Modern: Including Boutell's Heraldry We are taught that a single word spoken, a mere articulate syllable thrown into the air, reverberates through space for ever, seeing that there is no rim against which it can strike, no end at which it can possibly arrive. Similarly I would hope (not as an ingenious speculation) that those who have enjoyed the study of Heraldry may, each in turn, contribute in some measure to extend the knowledge of this delightful science and help to remove the ignorance and confusion which exists, until every person knows, and ceases to violate, its simple rules. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Heraldry, Historical and Popular Historical Heraldry occupies a position of such impor tance in Histories of England, that a certain amount of heraldic knowledge has become indispensable to the. Student of English History. Every Gothic Architect ought to be a thorough Herald. Heraldry alone can enable him to render his works, in the noblest and most perfect sense, historic monuments. Without Heraldry, no lover of the great Art, which has been so happily revived amongst us, is able either to feel the full power of what the Gothic has transmitted to him from the olden time, or to realise all that it is now able to accomplish as a living art. In presenting the eighteenth to the Public, it is only necessary to say, that in order to secure a continuance of such popularity, the book has undergone complete revision; and by the omission of some exploded theories, and the correction of a few erroneous Opinions, been rendered, it is hoped, a still more trustworthy Hand-book to an Art as useful as it is ornamental - to a Science, the real value of which is daily becoming more apparent in this age of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of Heraldry for Americans IT is usual to commence American books on heraldic and genealogic matters with a half apology for introducing such subjects to the notice of the citizens of a republic. The writer believes apologies to be entirely unnecessary. Such topics deserve their due Share of attention (though it may not bo a large share) in a country which con tains millions of descendants of good fami lies of England and the Continent. General George Washington inherited a coat of arms from reputable English ancestors, and used it on appropriate occasions. Ben jamin Franklin applied for and obtained a grant of armorial bearings, and his motto was, Exemplum adest ipse homo (conduct marks the Where two such Repub licans led, Americans need not fear to follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Heraldry This little Volume, specially prepared for the use of students at an early period of their study of English Heraldry, commends itself also to those inquirers who may desire to obtain some general information on the same subject, without having any intention to devote to Heraldry much either of their time or of their serious regard. The success, no less extraordinary than gratifying, of my larger work on Heraldry, led me to hope that a not less favourable reception might be extended to a simpler and much shorter essay, more decidedly elementary in its aim and character, and yet as far as possible within its limits complete. Such a treatise I have endeavoured to produce in this Volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A Complete Guide to Heraldry: Look inside the book: But doubtless the inclusion of such instances is due to an attempt, conscious or unconscious, on the part of the writers who have taken their stand on the side of great antiquity to so frame the definition of armory that it shall include everything heraldic, and due perhaps somewhat to the half unconscious {3}reasoning that these mythical animals, and more especially the peculiarly heraldic positions they are depicted in, which nowadays we only know as part of armory, and which exist nowhere else within our knowledge save within the charmed circle of heraldry, must be evidence of the great antiquity of that science or art, call it which you will. ...'The old Asiatic style, so highly figurative, seems, by what we find of {11}its remains in the prophetic language of the sacred writers, to have been evidently fashioned to the mode of the ancient hieroglyphics; for as in hieroglyphic writing the sun, moon, and stars were used to represent states and empires, kings, queens, and nobility—their eclipse and extinction, temporary disasters, or entire overthrow—fire and flood, desolation by war and famine; plants or animals, the qualities of particular persons, &c.; so, in like manner, the Holy Prophets call kings and empires by the names of the heavenly luminaries; their misfortunes and overthrow are represented by eclipses and extinction; stars falling from the firmament are employed to denote the destruction of the nobility; thunder and tempestuous winds, hostile invasions; lions, bears, leopards, goats, or high trees, leaders of armies, conquerors, and founders of empires; royal dignity is described by purple, or a crown; iniquity by spotted garments; a warrior by a sword or bow; a powerful man, by a gigantic stature; a judge by balance, weights, and measures—in a word, the prophetic style seems to be a speaking hieroglyphic.'

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Decorative Heraldry: A Practical Handbook of Its Artistic Treatment Heraldry as a system, has been copiously written about in a series of works extending from the fifteenth century, when Nicholas Upton wrote his treatise, until now; and the subject has therefore been well examined from the scientific point of view. From its artistic side, on the other hand, it appears not to have attracted that amount of attention which the interesting and decorative character of the subject might have been expected to secure. Except for short incidental references in general works on heraldry, and in papers read to certain learned and artistic societies, its decorative aspect has been treated as of comparatively minor importance. Many of those who have desired to practise the art have had to approach it anew by independent study, and to re-discover by patient research the examples of good work on which to base their own; an excellent method, but susceptible of simplification. It was with a view to assist in some measure the efforts that in so many directions are being devoted to the adequate presentation of heraldry that the present work was undertaken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heraldry for the Craftsman Many writers give the Crusades, 1096 - 1270, as the beginning of the science of heraldry. During these enterprises great changes took place in the weapons and armours used. These changes and the various forms of crosses that were adopted (see chapter V) without doubt had their influence on the heraldry of a later date. Yet the only relation that any of these may claim to heraldry is that they were symbolical devices carried by warriors to distinguish one group from another they were in no sense a shield of arms, as they possessed no hereditary character. Although there are depicted in the Bayeaux Tapestry, illustrating the Norman conquest, knights with banners and shields charged with various emblems, most authorities agree that at this period no form of heraldic science existed; indeed, it was not until the second half of the twelfth century that coats of arms, as we know them, came into being; and it was not until the thirteenth century that they were governed by a code of rules and the Science of Heraldry definitely established. At this period heraldry held such a place in the hearts of the popu lace that even those oi little education were well acquainted with its language and meaning, they, having so to speak, grown up together.
