Population growth is not solely in larger metropolitan centres - the mega cities. The numbers of small and intermediate-sized urban centres are also increasing and have an important role as links in the marketing system. This guide provides a simplified aid to understanding the physical implications of marketing linkages, based on a regional planning approach. The guide provides a simple planning methodology and framework that focuses on the issue of linking farmers to market outlets for their produce particularly identifying their marketing infrastructure needs. The users of the guide are likely to be at national, provincial or district levels and could include planners and engineers in ministries and departments of public works and transport, planning and marketing officers in ministries and departments of agriculture, local authority officers in planning, commerce and marketing departments and local authorities, communities, farmer groups and voluntary organizations, concerned to understand marketing constraints and with ensuring that rural producers have better access to markets for their products.

Book excerpt: Over approximately the past 40 years, many developing countries invested in the establishment of agricultural market information systems or services (MIS). These systems or services were initially run by government agencies, but since the turn of the millennium private organizations have shown interest in providing data on a commercial basis. To date, however, these private services, while usually being more efficient than the government-run ones, have also largely depended on donor support for their continued operation. It has proved difficult to develop a profitable business model as many of the clients are small farmers and traders. Agricultural market information systems or services (MIS) can cover staples, horticultural crops, livestock, and export commodities. They are generally designed to collect, process, and disseminate or distribute data of relevance to farmers, traders and other buyers, such as processors, but the data they generate can also be used for a variety of purposes by governments, donors, international organizations and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zambia has faced several challenges in its quest to attain economic development and as well as economic independence. One sector that the country has endeavoured to develop for a very long time is agribusiness. Agriculture besides mining is the oldest and significant industry to Zambia’s foreign exchange earnings and it contributes about twenty-five percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Since the slump in the copper prices, production of copper has gone down leading to declined exports. This has resulted in reduced forex inflows from the mining as it is the major contributor to the economy. After privatization of major industries including the mines in early 90s, Agriculture has become one of the key sectors and it is also the largest provider of employment opportunities in the country, contributing over seventy percent of jobs in the country. This book tries to profile the progression of agribusiness development in the country. It brings out some of the salient points that have led to agribusiness stagnation for over fifty years after independence. It also highlights some of the policy mistakes the country has made as a country and in some cases, provides suggestions for possible solutions. It emphasizes the fact that agriculture sector can be a cornerstone of the manufacturing sector. The book also highlights some of the great potential the country has and some other sectors that have great opportunities for investments. The book clearly points out the key sectors as being agriculture, tourism, mining and manufacturing. In the closing chapter, the book draws the readers to some of the articles that were published with three local tabloids from 2012 to 2018 to give it a practical touch of agribusiness and some of the successes achieved thus far.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that around 1.3 billion tons per year of food produced for human consumption, which is about one-third of all food produced, is either lost or wasted globally. Reduction of the postharvest losses is being considered as one of the sustainable ways to ensure world food security. Postharvest Extension and Capacity Building for the Developing World provides information on postharvest extension/outreach programs, capacity building, and practical methodologies for postharvest extension professionals and food science teachers, food processing trainers, and outreach specialists who work in the field. The book provides information on training of postharvest trainers, food loss assessment methods, capacity building in universities and agro-industry, distance education methods, models for cost effective postharvest/food processing extension work, success stories, and lessons learned from past projects and programs. The book is divided into four sections. Section I explains postharvest loss assessments methods, Section II is on capacity building, and Sections III and IV focus on training and postharvest extension models. Food loss assessment methodologies are highlighted from several high-profile institutions and it is envisioned that researchers and postharvest extension personnel will benefit from the development and field testing of a hybrid methodology, incorporating the strengths and utilizing the best practices from each of the methodologies in current use. Chapters cover postharvest extension work and capacity building in a wide range of regions.

Book excerpt: Farm management extension is concerned with the development of management strategies and skills among farmers for improved decision-making in the use of resources and linking farmers to markets. With the increasing market-orientation of farming, the decisions taken by farmers are more complex; for farms to compete they must be run as a business. This creates a demand for specialized extension support. To be successful farmers need the skills to produce what the market wants and what satisfies consumers. The growing importance of specialization in farm management is to support farmers in this work.
