Book excerpt: Assessments of local housing need are becoming increasingly common and, indeed, most new developments either in policy or on the ground will have been informed in some way by a piece of needs research. However, not all needs identified in such assessments lead to any action on the ground or to a positive response from local policy makers. This study sets out to extend our understanding of both the organization of needs assessments and their role in the broader processes of policy development and service planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online via SciVerse ScienceDirect, or in print for a limited time only, The International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home, Seven Volume Set is the first international reference work for housing scholars and professionals, that uses studies in economics and finance, psychology, social policy, sociology, anthropology, geography, architecture, law, and other disciplines to create an international portrait of housing in all its facets: from meanings of home at the microscale, to impacts on macro-economy. This comprehensive work is edited by distinguished housing expert Susan J. Smith, together with Marja Elsinga, Ong Seow Eng, Lorna Fox O'Mahony and Susan Wachter, and a multi-disciplinary editorial team of 20 world-class scholars in all. Working at the cutting edge of their subject, liaising with an expert editorial advisory board, and engaging with policy-makers and professionals, the editors have worked for almost five years to secure the quality, reach, relevance and coherence of this work. A broad and inclusive table of contents signals (or tesitifes to) detailed investigation of historical and theoretical material as well as in-depth analysis of current issues. This seven-volume set contains over 500 entries, listed alphabetically, but grouped into seven thematic sections including methods and approaches; economics and finance; environments; home and homelessness; institutions; policy; and welfare and well-being. Housing professionals, both academics and practitioners, will find The International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home useful for teaching, discovery, and research needs. International in scope, engaging with trends in every world region The editorial board and contributors are drawn from a wide constituency, collating expertise from academics, policy makers, professionals and practitioners, and from every key center for housing research Every entry stands alone on its merits and is accessed alphabetically, yet each is fully cross-referenced, and attached to one of seven thematic categories whose ‘wholes' far exceed the sum of their parts

Book Synopsis Developing a local housing strategy by : United States Conference of Mayors
Download or read book Developing a local housing strategy written by United States Conference of Mayors and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook is written to assist local government officials in coping with the Community Development Block Grant program , in particular with its requirement that communities must develop a formal Housing Assistance Plan. To do so , the community has to determine its future housing needs and figure out ways to meet them--an appropriate procedure even if a community happens not to be seeking federal grants. In describing how to develop a housing strategy appropriate to all segments of the local population , the guide moves clearly, in a step-by-step way, from a discussion of the basic structure of the housing market to an analysis of goal-setting, always reminding the reader that a housing strategy can hardly be successful unless it is related to population, to jobs, and to economic development. We recommend the guide not only for its thoroughness and clarity but for its insistence on balance and informed decision-making.

Book Synopsis Housing Need and the Need for Housing by : Richard Fordham
Download or read book Housing Need and the Need for Housing written by Richard Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book addresses a central issue in housing: that of ‘need’ and how to meet it. Need refers either to individual household circumstances or to the aggregate requirement for new (social and market) housing. The book develops a new policy mechanism to address the present fragmented policy situation. The mechanism now used to allocate finance and new social housing numbers is complex and ineffective in terms of meeting needs. The book’s proposals are rooted in clear definitions of the key terms, especially that of housing need, which suffers from lack of any clear definition. The analysis is developed using a large database of survey information covering England and Wales. The proposed policy mechanism should be of great interest at a time when radical change to local government are being considered. The proposed mechanism would greatly increase value for money of public time and expenditure on (planning for) social housing.
Book Synopsis Assessing Housing Need by : Great Britain. Scottish Development Department
Download or read book Assessing Housing Need written by Great Britain. Scottish Development Department and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is primarily intended to be one of technical guidance, directed mainly at the officers in local authorities who carry out the work of housing needs assessment or who are responsible for initiating, organising or monitoring the work. This objective was not an easy one to meet satisfactory, for a number of reasons: -- the level of technical knowledge and experience of needs assessment varies widely; a number of local authorities in Scotland have carried out quite detailed assessments but there are many where first hand experience of the approach, methods and techniques recommended here is limited -- housing needs and issues vary widely from one part of the country to another and a particular technique or combination of techniques which may apply in an urban area may not necessarily do so in a rural one and vice versa.

Book Synopsis Home Ownership. Getting In, Getting From, Getting Out. by : P. Boelhouwer
Download or read book Home Ownership. Getting In, Getting From, Getting Out. written by P. Boelhouwer and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home ownership sectors in most European countries have grown in size. Whatever assets European households have acquired in recent decades, real estate appears to form a significant element in wealth portfolios. Frequently, national governments have been active in promoting the shift-in tenure balance. The general question pursued in this book is about the gains and losses accruing to individual households by virtue of their position as home owners. The focus, here, is on financial gains and losses. This book is also concerned with the losses, in the form of repayment risk, related to, difficulties that some households may experience in meeting housing loan repayment schedules. The immediate background to this volume is the Conference on Housing Growth and Regeneration. Hosted by the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, it was held under the auspices of the European Network of Housing Researchers.
