Book Synopsis Composition, Structure, and Dynamics of Six Forest Community Types in North Central Wisconsin by : Keri J. Teal
Download or read book Composition, Structure, and Dynamics of Six Forest Community Types in North Central Wisconsin written by Keri J. Teal and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1927, when strict fire control laws were passed, northern Wisconsin forests had been severely cut and burned, producing a number of successional forest community types. Beginning in 2001, successional patterns were examined in forest communities on sand and loamy sand soils. Stands were sampled using nested plots: 0.4 ha for trees, 0.002 ha for seedlings, and 0.004 for saplings. Tree diameter was converted to basal area and importance values (relative basal area) developed for each species. Sapling and seedling counts were converted to a per hectare basis and an importance value (relative density) developed for each species. Forest communities were organized by classification and ordination in PC-ORD analysis. Comparisons were made between the overstory composed of shade-intolerant species and the understory of more shade-tolerant species. These comparisons were made using index of similarity and stratum analyses. The six forest community types that were indentified on the sand and loamy sand soils were Hills oak ( Quercus ellipsoidalis ), jack pine (Pinus banksiana ), red pine (Pinus resinosa ), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides ), white birch (Betula papyrifera ) and white pine (Pinus strobus ). The first three communities, Hills oak, jack pine and red pine, were found on the soils containing more than 90% sand and have similar understory conditions dominated by Quercus spp. , A. rubrum and P. strobus , with little to no regeneration of the overstory species P. resinosa and P. banksiana . Quercus ellipsoidalis , P. banksiana and P. resinosa are disturbance species that need fire to regenerate or a disturbance that removes the overstory canopy. Quaking aspen, white birch and white pine communities are found on the loamy sand textures. The white pine community is jointly dominated by Quercus and Acer species. Understory conditions among these three community types indicates a shift in composition to a community dominated by Quercus spp. , P. strobus , A. rubrum and A. saccharum , with little regeneration of P. tremuloides and B. papyrifera . Abies balsamea also persists in large numbers throughout the understory of the communities. It appears that the white pine community will most likely be the endpoint community given that no major disturbance occurs. Analyses indicate a new cohort of future forest communities composed of Pinus strobus , Quercus spp , and Acer spp. suggesting convergent succession is taking place, therefore, causing an ultimate loss of biodiversity within these six community types.

Whether examining the national war on soil erosion, Amish migration, a Corps of Engineers dam project, or Native American land claims, Lynne Heasley traces the history of modern American property debates. Her book holds powerful lessons for rural communities seeking to reconcile competing values about land and their place in it.

Book Synopsis The Emerald Horizon by : Cornelia F. Mutel
Download or read book The Emerald Horizon written by Cornelia F. Mutel and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Emerald Horizon, Cornelia Mutel combines lyrical writing with meticulous scientific research to portray the environmental past, present, and future of Iowa. In doing so, she ties all of Iowa's natural features into one comprehensive whole. Since so much of the tallgrass state has been transformed into an agricultural landscape, Mutel focuses on understanding today’s natural environment by understanding yesterday’s changes. After summarizing the geological, archaeological, and ecological features that shaped Iowa’s modern landscape, she recreates the once-wild native communities that existed prior to Euroamerican settlement. Next she examines the dramatic changes that overtook native plant and animal communities as Iowa’s prairies, woodlands, and wetlands were transformed. Finally she presents realistic techniques for restoring native species and ecological processes as well as a broad variety of ways in which Iowans can reconnect with the natural world. Throughout, in addition to the many illustrations commissioned for this book, she offers careful scientific exposition, a strong sense of respect for the land, and encouragement to protect the future by learning from the past. The “emerald prairie” that “gleamed and shone to the horizon’s edge,” as botanist Thomas Macbride described it in 1895, has vanished. Cornelia Mutel’s passionate dedication to restoring this damaged landscape—and by extension the transformed landscape of the entire Corn Belt—invigorates her blend of natural history and human history. Believing that citizens who are knowledgeable about native species, communities, and ecological processes will better care for them, she gives us hope—and sound suggestions—for the future.
Book Synopsis Common Sense Forestry by : Hans W. Morsbach
Download or read book Common Sense Forestry written by Hans W. Morsbach and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Sense Forestry relates thirty years' experience of an environmentally conscious woodland owner. Much of the book is devoted to starting a forest and how to maintain it. It answers such questions as: What seedlings to buy? Should your forest be monoculture or a mixed forest? What is the payback for planting and maintaining a forest? Is seeding a good way to start a forest? What kind of seeds work best? Does it pay to hire a consultant? What should he/she do for you? Does it pay to do much maintenance in your forest? How should I prune? Is timberland improvement worthwhile? How, when and whether to thin? How to herbicide and when? Can the damage done to nature by chemicals be justified by the benefits to your seedlings? What are the economics of woodland ownership? The success and history of German forestry methods is discussed and suggests what can be learned from these age-old practices. It will tell you how to file your income taxes, what equipment to buy, what works--and does not work--and why. It also provides guidance on how to deal with state and federal programs. Although intended for private woodland owners, the book is used as a classroom text in universities. The book is more practical than technical, yet still imparts knowledge of basic forestry, explaining terms such as succession and shade tolerance and how to apply these concepts in practice. Even sophisticated concepts are covered in plain, non-technical terms. Hans Morsbach, the author, believes that forestry is an art more than a science. Competent foresters may apply different methods of managing their forests and achieve comparable results. Still, it is important to be guided by natural forest principles. Doing nothing may sometimes be a better course of action than doing too much. The book suggests ways to gauge your involvement with your woodland to time available and your personal preference. It is most important that you enjoy your forest.
