Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elinor M. Brent-Dyer was born Gladys Eleanor May Dyer on April 6, 1894 in South Shields, in the northeast of England. She wrote over a hundred books of children’s literature during her life. From lower middle-class roots, she went to a small private school and became a teacher after attending the City of Leeds Training College. As a teacher, she worked at both public and private schools, and even as a governess. She had an interest in the theater, and her first book Gerry Goes to School (the first in her La Rochelle series) was written in 1922 --for the child actress Hazel Bainbridge. About this time, inspired by a vacation to the Austrian Alps, she wrote The School at the Chalet in 1923 (the first in her Chalet School series). Brent-Dyer continued to teach and tried rather unsuccessfully to run her own school from 1938 to 1948. After this, she quit teaching but continued writing until her death on September 20, 1969 in Redhill, Surrey.

Throughout his career, Corrigan has established a look that is layered and detailed, while always suitable for the way people live today. His distinctive approach encompasses practicality as well as beauty, merging European refinement with California comfort. Here, Corrigan shares homes in which he has defined a new contemporary elegance, including a John Fowler-inspired London townhouse, a Hollywood Regency-inspired Los Angeles Colonial, an art-filled Chicago apartment in the sky, and Corrigan's own Paris pied-à-terre. Corrigan includes advice throughout on how to adapt classic design principles and traditional forms to make them work for busy modern lives. Between each chapter are instructive interludes in which Corrigan outlines the building blocks of successful decoration, with fundamental topics such as scale and proportion, symmetry, architectural details, and working with color.

Book excerpt: When Nan, Robert, Timothy, and Betsy's father went off to explore in Egypt, he left the children with their grandmother who lived in the English countryside. Unfortunately she did not much like children, much less their dog, Absalom. So the children ran away to stay with their Uncle Ambrose, an eccentric, strict, and loveable retired school teacher who was determined to give them an Education, but in addition to Greek, Latin, and Literature, the Linnet children learned much more — about nature and magic, the power of the past and Pan, and, of course, the importance of the bees. They used their knowledge to find the lost Valerians, undo some very wicked, ancient spells, and reunite a divided family. The word "enchanting" is overused, but in this case it applies.

Book excerpt: Featuring interiors by today’s top designers, The Power of Pattern shows how wallpaper and fabric designs can be used to elevate and personalize every room. Both a beautiful interiors book and a resource guide, it features a diversity of interiors and styles, showcasing the patterns themselves in full-page splendor. Best-selling interiors author Susanna Salk turns her focus to patterns, celebrating their versatility and creative possibilities, from a dash of colorful pattern in the entryway to the whimsy of a uniquely upholstered chair in the dining room or a luxuriously textured bedroom curtain. A practical primer on the many motifs available—“Nature”, “Animal”, “Floral”, “Ikat”, “Chinoiserie”, “Stripes”, and “Toile” are some of the chapters—this volume presents myriad versions of each, with inspiring examples of how to decorate with them. Salk also provides tips on how to use pattern in a particular space—for example, stripes create the illusion of a bigger room, and floral patterns look modern and bold (not fussy) when used on a big scale in bright colors. Presenting rooms by design stars such as Alessandra Branca, Miles Redd, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, and Mary McDonald, among others, The Power of Pattern teaches how to mix and match to make a house look effortlessly decorated. And Salk’s encouraging design tips give inspirational ideas and practical tips, opening up a world of decorating creativity.
