Book excerpt: The Neiare departed the Ecuadorian port on a scheduled exercise along a bearing closely straddling the equator. The ship's working crew plus a technical staff of horticulturists were soon to be pulled violently from their normal monotonous daily routines. They would be cast into a myriad of terrifying, life threatening situations that had to be overcome in order to survive. As the ship's situation turns grave the staff fight to maintain their fragile life support systems. Gerald Gross and his covert “Sustain” group must deftly manage the remaining crew to battle on in order to stay alive. The odds are increasingly against their survival with each passing minute of indecision. Unknown to the bulk of Horticulturists, the work that they dedicated their careers to was about to become much more vital. This was a fact the other major nations in the world had been well aware of. Now their determined efforts to acquire the cargo that the Neiare berthed on board were intensified to a degree of terrifying desperation. The fate of hundreds of millions may now rest in “Sustains” hands. In summary each of the staff has a differing degree of knowledge as to the scientific importance of the genetically modified seeds that they work with. None of the staff have made the connection as to what the enormous value these products could have to the entire world in the very near future.

Book Synopsis Imprisoned Fathers by : Catherine Flynn
Download or read book Imprisoned Fathers written by Catherine Flynn and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume specifically examines current concerns about imprisoned fathers and highlights best practices with a group of children and parents who present significant vulnerabilities. It brings together contemporary works in this area, to share and consolidate knowledge, to encourage comparisons and collaborations across jurisdictions, and to stimulate debate, all with the aim of furthering knowledge and improving practice in this area. Although there is considerable focus on imprisoned mothers, there is limited knowledge or understanding of the needs, experiences, or effective responses to imprisoned fathers and their children, despite men making up the vast majority of the prison population. The ongoing and negative impact of parental incarceration on children is well documented, and includes emotional and behavioural consequences, marginalisation, and stigma, as well as financial and social stresses. However, understanding of these processes, and, importantly, what can assist children and families, is poor. This book seeks to add to the understanding of paternal imprisonment by providing an in-depth exploration of how the arrest, detention, and experiences of fathers during imprisonment can affect their ability to parent and meet the needs of their children. This book was originally published as a special issue of Child Care in Practice. tly, what can assist children and families, is poor. Book excerpt: A bizarre clause in an elderly woman’s will exposes a dirty secret—and a murder—in this “intricate, witty, and thoroughly delightful” mystery (Publishers Weekly). It was an odd request, but when Octavia Garamond passed away, she left explicit instructions in her will: The police must be present at her funeral, and the coroner should be exceptionally thorough when examining her body. Amelia Kennerly is perplexed to find herself the sole executor of her great-aunt’s will, as she barely knew her. Further questions arise when the local parson, Mr. Fournier, is anything but happy to conduct Octavia’s service. Then someone breaks into Octavia’s home and tears the house apart. It seems the old lady’s words may have been eerily prescient: “Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.” From a winner of crime fiction’s prestigious Diamond Dagger, this twisting mystery featuring Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan of the Berebury CID is “a literate, surprising treat” (Publishers Weekly).
Book Synopsis Gastroenteritis: A Growing Concern by : Augustus Green
Download or read book Gastroenteritis: A Growing Concern written by Augustus Green and published by Foster Academics. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the stomach and the small intestine. It is often called "stomach flu". Its symptoms mainly include abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, fever and vomiting. Rotavirus and norovirus are two of the most common causes of gastroenteritis. The transmission of both these viruses takes place through the fecal-oral route. Lack of adequate sanitation, open defecation and poor hygiene practices are the main causes of disease transmission. The methods of prevention include proper hand washing with soap, proper disposal of human waste and drinking clean water. Rotavirus vaccine is effective in preventing rotavirus in children. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as modern approaches of diagnosing and managing gastroenteritis. It will also provide interesting topics for research, which interested readers can take up. For all those who are interested in gastroenteritis, this book can prove to be an essential guide.
Book Synopsis Race After Technology by : Ruha Benjamin
Download or read book Race After Technology written by Ruha Benjamin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From everyday apps to complex algorithms, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce White supremacy and deepen social inequity. Benjamin argues that automation, far from being a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web, has the potential to hide, speed up, and deepen discrimination while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to the racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encode inequity by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies; by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions; or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of technology, designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice in the architecture of everyday life. This illuminating guide provides conceptual tools for decoding tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold but also the ones we ourselves manufacture. Visit the book's free Discussion Guide here.
