It is truly a worthwhile accomplishment as all of Hoyles books are now out of print. Francis Andrews work therefore offers a great service in preserving the thoughts of one the twentieth centurys greatest minds. Gihan, Weerasekara. Dompe, Sri Lanka. A Great Man of Great Science covers all of Sir Fred Hoyles publications from his fi rst in 1950 to his last in 2001. Francis Andrews appraisal of each of these works is the next best thing to reading the original works of Hoyle himself. After reading these appraisals, one could well be tempted to take the next step and read the actual works of Hoyle. Siddhant Bahuguna. Uttar Pradesh, India. Francis A. Andrew has truly done a magnificent job in writing appraisals for each of Sir Fred Hoyles works. As Francis style of writing has done so much to make Hoyle come alive and inject into his works a relevancy for the twenty fi rst century, so it would be that even if readers of this volume were unacquainted with any of Hoyles books, they would surely be tempted to procure for themselves the original works of Hoyle. Ajinkya Bhede. Maharashtra, Nagpur, India.

BUT THE TRUTH IS that many of the major scientific contributions were made by scientists who were dedicated men of God. In Men of Science, Men of God, Dr. Henry Morris presents 101 biographies and Christian testimonies of scientists who believed in the Bible and in a personal Creator God - scientists who were pioneers and "founding fathers" of modern scientific disciplines.

Book excerpt: This early work by Jerome K. Jerome was originally published in 1892 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Man of Science' is a classic Victorian ghost story. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and best-remembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.

Book excerpt: This edition first published in 1970. Francis Galton has been honoured as the founder of biostatics and one of the creators of modern psychology. His principal aim was to establish a body of statistical knowledge about mental heredity which would result in a new pattern of behaviour for society. The relationship between outstanding men had led him to conclude that mental traits are inherited, and that an ideal society would take advantage of this "fact". In this particular work, which he termed a "Natural History of the English Men of Science of the present day", he examined at great length the antecedents, environment, education and hereditary features of the most prominent men of science in order to establish certain laws relating to heredity. It is a landmark in the transition from introspective to objective methods in biological and psychological research, and the author’s statistical, nonanecdotal approach was to prove immensely fruitful for the development of psychology. Indeed the questionnaire included in the work is probably the earliest in existence. As Professor Cowan points out in her introduction, historians as well as scientists intent upon a deeper understanding of the Victorian mind will find much of interest in this remarkable book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Men of Science: A History of Scientific Progress I count it an honour to be allowed to write a few words of introduction for the English edition of Professor Lenard's historical studies of the great men of science. It is now over twenty years since I worked as a research student in his laboratory, and time has dulled many memories, but the recollection of his inspiriting and wholehearted devotion to the service of science, of his generous enthusiasm forthe work of men of genius, living and dead, and of his wonderful experimental skill and resource, is still bright. Ramsauer, Hausser and Kossel, whose names have since become famous, were among his research students at that time, and the physics colloquium, with Professor Lenard's illumin ating and significant interjections, comments and questions, made the pursuit of scientific truth seem an exciting and supremely desirable quest. It was on such occasions that Professor Lenard's interest in the history of science came particularly to our notice. Who had first shown the way here, what had he actually done, how was he led to do it? Such questions, to which our professor too often had to supply the answer himself, brought before us the great ness of past workers and the significance of their achieve ments. Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Hertz (who was Lenard's teacher): such men became living figures for us, and their tasks and successes appeared as part of an organic structure, and not as an empty record of past times.
