Book excerpt: From my home in San Juan, a lovely sector of central Tibas, situated just north of San Jose, Costa Rica, while the candle flickers I commence the writing of these varied glimpses. Warning! What you are about to read are personal memoirs! They are much to do about self. They amount to a large group of random thoughts, sporadic observations. I always feel I am somehow supposed to write my thoughts down what a big ego I must have because (I like to think that) if you put them all together, they form a loose-knit way of seeing the world. They are a part of my worldview. Everyone has one of these whats your view of the world look like? I am going to be a world philosopher when I grow up, you see. That is what my intention is, since I have always been preoccupied with how to see things, how to process things. How odd is life anyway. Thats why my interest in philosophy to figure out the oddness of life. Normally, I think philosophy can be pretty dry and boring. But, for me, its terribly exciting. In this book, what you are about to delve into will resemble the form of an ongoing story. It will consist of a sequence of six weeks of shadows and lights (i.e. days and nights). After that time, wherever I am at with it, I will stop, and simply and abruptly start to write another book about something else I know not what. Here though, I will (I suspect) be sharing with you a series of ideas, dreams, fears, logical thoughts, illogical thoughts, wonderings, wanderings and general psychobabble. I say that because I intend to impart thoughts and ideas about whatever might be in my ongoing existence in being. This could be anything, I assure youas of course it could be for anyone. Exactly what will appear in the pages that represent the next six weeks of my life, I do not have any idea that, for me, is going to be much of the fun of writing it!

Book excerpt: When a missionary becomes a victim of depression -author Harrison Mungal suffered from depression as a result of the death of his co-worker and friend, while living in Croatia for two years. It came as a serious blow to the mind, and he found it difficult to cope. Harrison is a man of passion who enjoys supporting individuals who may be in distress, however when his time came, he almost fell apart. For over one year he refused to draw from his source of strength, as he felt his source of strength was responsible. He had a pain no medicine in the world could cure. The battle between grief and depression struck him down. He became like the walls of Jericho and began to crumble. He returned back to Canada from Croatia and began to fight a different type of war. A war between himself and depression; after a period of time, he went back to his source of strength and was taken into a spiritual journey which brought him out of his predicament. He had a glimpse of power which transformed his life to support those who are suffering with the same or similar issues. Life is like a vapour, one minute you see it and another minute its gone. This book tells the story of a heart that was broken as a result of the death of a friend. The author shares about the strength of a wife and the power of belief. The book gives the reader hope that is built on ones spirituality. Just A Glimpse.. will change your life for a lifetime, expresses the importance of hope. A glimpse of hope brings strength and strength will transform a life to live. The depth of hope is explored which brought victory. "As we capture a glimpse, we will develop a desire to become witnesses, knowing that God is able to do the impossible.

Book excerpt: Perhaps no other word in the English language instills feelings of fear, dread, anguish, or curiosity of the unknown as "death." What happens to us when we die? Just what is death? You can ask a hundred people these same questions, and get a hundred different answers. The above questions will be answered in this book, based upon the Holy Scriptures (Holy Bible, King James Version). Even though this book deals with the subject of "death," it is not meant to be morbid. For a child of God, the stories in this book will bring hope, peace, and anticipation of that day when he/she will be reunited with Christian loved ones already deceased, and ushered into that Heavenly Home. In this book, you will read true accounts of people who have seen and heard what lies beyond this mortal life just before they died. In the story of "Ginger," you will even read of some extraordinary happenings surrounding the death of the author's beloved cat. It is the author's wish that the reader enjoy this book and, maybe, catch "A Glimpse Beyond" this life through the eyes of the people inside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Glimpse of the Chosen challenges readers to ponder the Bibles teaching of the doctrine of election. The writer begins by giving a small glimpse into the domain of the absolute holiness of God, his amazing power, his righteousness, and his love. God, who is the ultimate genius, has a divine purpose for everything that occurs in time and space, both good and evil, in order to ultimately reveal the amazing riches of his glory. A Glimpse of the Chosen unfolds a glimpse of Gods work in calling people to him, beginning in the Garden of Eden, continuing throughout history, and ending with the kingdom of Jesus Christ. The writer demonstrates that we are fallen creatures with a distorted knowledge of life. We can take comfort in the fact that no matter how things appear, God is in control and has a purpose for every human being, both saved and lost, that he creates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University is a major way that our society prepares professionals and leaders in education, health, government, business, arts, church--all components of our communal lives. Although the beginnings of the first universities were Christian, academia has become more and more adrift from these foundations. We have lost not only the union, the interwovenness of theological and academic understandings, but also the relational and communal process of learning which teaches students to be other-centered in their practice. A Glimpse of the Kingdom in Academia tells the story of the social sciences department of a small Christian university that took seriously the mandate to prepare their students to be salt and light in a secular society. Here are stories of the transformation in students' lives, as well as description of classroom practices, and the epistemological theory behind those practices. The book explores academic knowing, Christian worldview, relational epistemology, inner knowing, and wisdom--all ways of knowing that a Christian university should teach. The process of transformation, the context of community, and the bigger picture of life's journey and changing images of God are identified as important aspects of kingdom life in academia. The institutional setting is also critiqued with the recognition that power practices need to align with the kingdom of the Christ who emptied himself.

Book excerpt: Edmund Lea perpetually rides a ghost train -- except every seven years on Christmas Eve, when he is allowed to revisit his home town. Like Wagner's Flying Dutchman, Edmund is condemned to eternity alone until he determines how to lift the curse upon him. Time passes, from 1970 to 2019, but Edmund remains seventeen, unable to age and watching the world grow older. He tries in vain to break the spell by way of true love, repentance, hedonism; he tries to change the world and he tries to die. Characters move in and out of Maxwell's story like Dante's figures in Hell, but Edmund's own Virgil is a careless and unhelpful poet, a portrait of the author as a student. The tale is told in formal terza rima, but its language and tone, its humor and sense of homesickness, are decidedly contemporary. It is a brilliant achievement.

He asked His disciples the piercing question: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” His identity continues to be questioned today. The non-Christian community and church members alike struggle to know. Either Jesus Christ is God revealed in human flesh or He is not! This is the very issue that divides the entire human race. Evil powers continue to mount a steady assault upon the character of Christ. To disgrace His character is to destroy the effect of His work on the cross.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socio-environmental crises are currently transforming the conditions for life on this planet, from climate change, to resource depletion, biodiversity loss and long-term pollutants. The vast scale of these changes, affecting land, sea and air have prompted calls for the ‘ecologicalisation’ of knowledge. This book adopts a much needed ‘more-than-human’ framework to grasp these complexities and challenges. It contains multidisciplinary insights and diverse methodological approaches to question how to revise, reshape and invent methods in order to work with non-humans in participatory ways. The book offers a framework for thinking critically about the promises and potentialities of participation from within a more-than-human paradigm, and opens up trajectories for its future development. It will be of interest to those working in the environmental humanities, animal studies, science and technology studies, ecology, and anthropology.
