Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new voice in this stunning portrait of a daughter's love for her father and her near-unravelling after his death. My Father's Glass Eye is Jeannie's struggle to honour her father, her larger-than-life hero, but also the man who named her after his daughter from a previous marriage, a daughter who died. After his funeral, Jeannie spends the next decade in escalating mania, in and out of hospitals - increasingly obsessed with the other Jeanne. Obsession turns to investigation as she plumbs her childhood awareness of her dead half-sibling and hunts for clues into the mysterious circumstances of her death. It becomes a puzzle she must solve to better understand herself and her father. Jeannie pulls us into her unravelling with such intimacy that her insanity becomes palpable, even logical. A brilliant exploration of the human psyche, My Father's Glass Eye deepens our definitions of love, sanity, grief, and recovery. AUTHOR: Jeannie Vanasco is the highly acclaimed author of Things We Didn't Talk About When I Was A Girl. Her writing has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, The New York Times, and the New Yorker. She lives in Baltimore where she is an Assistant Professor of English at Towson University.

Little by little, she finds solace in writing about the losses in her life, about her person, and about indifference and freedom, and in sharing the doubts that arise in her creative process with a 'you' whom she imagines to be on the other side of the paper.

Book excerpt: "Showing how photo interpreters and intelligence analysts used aerial reconnaissance photographs to discover, identify, and expose enemy camouflage, To Fool a Glass Eye presents more than 350 U.S., British, and German photographs taken during World War II, many of which have never before been published. The book explains camouflage and photo interpretation techniques in detail, documenting successful and failed efforts by the United States, Australia, Britain, the Soviet Union, Germany, and Japan to conceal a range of objects - from soldiers and battleships to munitions factories, airfields, and bridges." "Author Roy M. Stanley II, head of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency's photography lab during the review and declassification of World War II photographs in the early 1980s, reveals a remarkable cat and mouse game, in which ground forces tried to conceal sensitive military targets from reconnaissance photographers, and photo analysts learned to spot camouflage and to distinguish decoys from the real thing. He also persuasively demonstrates how, in the long run, it was nearly impossible to fool the glass eye of the reconnaissance camera."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: There are many things that make Bruno special. He loves riding his bike and playing soccer, he is a great brother and is passionate about animals. He also has a prosthetic eye and in this book he tells you all about it. You will discover why Bruno got his special eye, how does he take care of it, how to protect eyes from accidents and what is a visit to the ocularist like. Having such a special eye is just one of the many things that make Bruno unique. This positive book will be a great resource for any child with vision in one eye, with or without a prosthetic eye, scleral shell or cosmetic lens. My Special Eye is also available in Spanish (Mi ojo especial: Un libro para niños sobre prótesis oculares) and Italian (Il mio occhio speciale: Un libro per bambini sulle protesi oculari). For more information, visit facebook.com/MySpecialEye/ From the Author: The story behind My Special Eye book My Special Eye was created a few years after my son lost vision in his left eye when he was 2 years old. One year later he had surgery to replace his eye with a prosthetic eye. It is an understatement to say that this affected our family deeply. Apart from the shock and pain for the suffering of our child and the anxiety for his future, we found ourselves dealing with something completely unexpected that we knew nothing about. Ocular prosthesis, scleral shell, hydroxyapatite implant, uveitis, phthisis bulbi, band keratopathy, evisceration, enucleation... suddenly all these terms became part of our day-to-day vocabulary. My Special Eye is the children's book we would have liked to have at that time. It will be a useful resource for any child with vision in one eye, a prosthetic eye or a scleral shell. Explaining a child that he or she needs an ocular prosthesis is not easy. However when the time came we found that our son and his sibling were way ahead of us in terms of acceptance, resilience and positivity. Also we soon realised that losing vision in one eye didn't limit our child in any way. For him his prosthesis meant that now he had a special eye that could be taken in and out. Nothing more and nothing less. I hope My Special Eye book will help monocular children and their families to realise that having a prosthetic eye is just one of the many things that make them so special and unique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From monocles to pince-nez and goggle-eyes, a cultural and technological history of glasses in fact and fiction. This book examines those who wore glasses through history, art, and literature, from the green emerald through which Emperor Nero watched gladiator fights to Benjamin Franklin’s homemade bifocals, and from Marilyn Monroe’s cat-eye glasses to the famed four-eyes of Emma Bovary and Harry Potter. Spectacles are objects that seem commonplace, but In the Blink of an Eye shows that because they fundamentally changed people’s lives, glasses were the wellspring of a quiet social, cultural, and economic revolution. Indeed, one can argue that modernity itself began with the paradigm shift that transformed poor eyesight from a severely limiting disease—treated with pomades and tinctures—into a minor impairment that can be remedied with mechanisms constructed from lenses and wire.

Book excerpt: 'By poetry we - we the masses - mean something vague, something untrue, something uplifting, something beautiful, something so eloquent it isn't for everyday. The word "poetry" is up there with "soul". And I am against it.' My Grandmother's Glass Eye deploys its considerable learning, its intelligent expertise, wittily, memorably. It is an exercise in demystification and clarity. If you want to know how poetry works on the page, here are sure-footed accounts of particular poems. There is something Johnsonian in Craig Raine's common sense - an elegant wrecking ball used with precision and delicacy to pick off the pretentious, the platitudinous, the over-promoted. Here, poetry is well read, attentively read, by a practitioner whose range runs from Bion to John Lennon, from Bishop to Balanchine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook to offer a comprehensive account of ocular prosthetics and the evidence used to underpin and support this field of healthcare. It does so by bringing together information from ophthalmology, prosthetic eye and contact lens literature, and from experts actively engaged in these fields. The book describes the psychological, anatomical and physiological aspects of eye loss as well as surgical procedures for removing the eye, patient evaluation, constructing prosthetic eyes (including prosthetic and surgical techniques for dealing with socket complications), the socket’s response to prosthetic eyes, prosthetic eye maintenance and the history of prosthetic eyes. Though primarily intended for prosthetists, ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and students in the fields of ocular medicine, maxillofacial medicine and anaplastology, the book also offers a useful resource for other health workers and family members who care for prosthetic eye patients, and for those patients seeking a deeper understanding of the issues affecting them than they can find elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century's first major academic reassessment of Impressionism, providing a new generation of scholars with a comprehensive view of critical conversations Presenting an expansive view of the study of Impressionism, this extraordinary volume breaks new thematic ground while also reconsidering established questions surrounding the definition, chronology, and membership of the Impressionist movement. In 34 original essays from established and emerging scholars, this collection considers a diverse range of developing topics and offers new critical approaches to the interpretation of Impressionist art. Focusing on the 1860s to 1890s, this Companion explores artists who are well-represented in Impressionist studies, including Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cassatt, as well as Morisot, Caillebotte, Bazille, and other significant yet lesser-known artists. The essays cover a wide variety of methodologies in addressing such topics as Impressionism's global predominance at the turn of the 20th century, the relationship between Impressionism and the emergence of new media, the materials and techniques of the Impressionists, and the movement's exhibition and reception history. Part of the acclaimed Wiley Blackwell Companions to Art History series, this important new addition to scholarship in this field: Reevaluates the origins, chronology, and critical reception of French Impressionism Discusses Impressionism's account of modern identity in the contexts of race, nationality, gender, and sexuality Explores the global reach and influence of Impressionism in Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, North Africa, and the Americas Considers Impressionism's relationship to the emergence of film and photography in the 19th century Considers Impressionism's representation of the private sphere as compared to its depictions of public issues such as empire, finance, and environmental change Addresses the Impressionist market and clientele, period criticism, and exhibition displays from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century Features original essays by academics, curators, and conservators from around the world, including those from France, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, and Argentina The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Impressionism is an invaluable text for students and academics studying Impressionism and late 19th century European art, Post-Impressionism, modern art, and modern French cultural history.
