Book excerpt: A Georgian Pageant is a late 1700s romance about a young woman. The novel begins with Miss Burney on a walk through the Kew Gardens when she suddenly finds herself in a chase with His Majesty, the king. His unfortunate state puts her in a difficult position that she must find a way out of. Excerpt: "She realized, all too painfully, the feelings of the poor hare at that moment. She longed for friendly earth to open up before her. They were behind her—those wild huntsmen, one hoarsely yelling to her she knew not what, the others, more shrill, shouting to her to stop."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A World Wide Pageant I had long recognized the latent desire that is in most people for "play acting," and felt the failure of the church in making use of this, seeming natural, instinct for the glory of the Kingdom. But when I began to cast about I found a dearth of suitable material. What I found was too difficult, too complicated in scenery or costuming, required too many rehearsals, or was in itself unappealing. The result was "The World Wide Pageant," in which I believe I have overcome all of these objections. This Pageant was written for use in my own church with no thought of its publication; but I have received so many requests for copies that I have decided to put it in print. In offering it to the public I must make certain grateful acknowledgements. To John Oxenham and Hugh Moss for certain verses adapted from their "Pageant of Darkness and Light." To Robt. W. Service for certain lines and phrases. To Rev. Herman C. Weber of the New Era Movement of New York for his encouragement in the publication. And last, but not least, to my faithful wife, Gertrude D. Campbell, whose knowledge of missions, customs and dress has enabled me to make the production a success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Produce a Pageant in Honor of George Washington A natural amphitheatre is greatly to be desired, but in any case the site should be chosen for beauty, for space and for the excellence of its acoustics. A lake or stream adds to the acoustic advantages, as well as to the beauty of scene. The ground must be firm and level for the dances and dramatic action. If possible, the prevailing breeze should blow from players to spectators. Temporary seats may be used, a grandstand erected, or the audience may sit on the grassy hillside. Unstable weather conditions can be met either by providing an alternate day or an alternate place within doors. In their preparation the school festival idea predominated. This means two things - first, that the work was made sub jective as far as possible, so that the emphasis was on the preparation rather than on the final per formance; and second, that the various departments of the school cooperated in making contributions to the work. For instance, when the Columbus cele bration was planned the classes in history studied that period, looked up sources, and then submitted their findings to the English classes, Where the plot was constructed and the words were written. Meanwhile the music department was training the school for the appropriate songs, the classes in domestic arts were planning and making the Cos tumes, art Classes were drawing posters, in the manual training rooms stage properties were being made, and in the gymnasium-dances Were devised and rehearsed, The reading and speaking depart ment coordinated the work and directed the produc. Download or read book A Beautiful Pageant written by D. Krasner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harlem Renaissance was an unprecedented period of vitality in the American Arts. Defined as the years between 1910 and 1927, it was the time when Harlem came alive with theater, drama, sports, dance and politics. Looking at events as diverse as the prizefight between Jack Johnson and Jim 'White Hope' Jeffries, the choreography of Aida Walker and Ethel Waters, the writing of Zora Neale Hurston and the musicals of the period, Krasner paints a vibrant portrait of those years. This was the time when the residents of northern Manhattan were leading their downtown counterparts at the vanguard of artistic ferment while at the same time playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Black nationalism. This is a thrilling piece of work by an author who has been working towards this major opus for years now. It will become a classic that will stay on the American history and theater shelves for years to come.
