Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides historians and genealogists with a one-stop guide to every Civil War–related manuscript collection stored in Georgia’s many repositories. With this guide in hand, researchers will no longer spend countless hours pouring through online catalogs, emailing archivists, and wondering if they have exhausted every lead in their pursuit of firsthand information about the war and the experiences of those who lived through and were impacted by it. In assembling the first state-specific bibliography to be compiled since the Indiana and Illinois bibliographies were assembled for the Civil War Centennial in the 1960s, David Slay has expanded the scope of this survey to include works relating to women, African Americans, and social history, as well as the letters and diaries of soldiers who fought in the war, reflecting society’s evolving understanding and interest in this defining period of American life. In addition, this compilation is not confined to material produced from 1861 to 1865, but also includes collections spanning the lives of prominent Civil War figures, making it an invaluable source for biographers. Organized by institution, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections has many time-saving features, all designed to increase efficiency of research. Each collection description contains the title and catalog number used in the holding institution. Where possible, collection descriptions have been improved upon, providing the researcher with information beyond what is listed in the holding institution’s card catalog and finding aid. It also cross-references duplicate collections that are held in two or more institutions as microfilm or photocopies. Simply put, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections takes the mystery out of Civil War research in Georgia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the Civil War, Georgia ranked third among the Confederate states in manpower resources, behind only Virginia and Tennessee. With an arms-bearing population somewhere between 120,000 and 130,000 white males between the ages of 16 and 60, this resource became an object of a great struggle between Joseph Brown, governor of Georgia, and Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Brown advocated a strong state defense, but as the war dragged on Davis applied more pressure for more soldiers from Georgia. In December 1863, the state's general assembly reorganized the state militia and it became known as Joe Brown's Pets. Civil War historians William Scaife and William Bragg have written not only the first history of the Georgia Militia during the Civil War, but have produced the definitive history of this militia. Using original documents found in the Georgia Department of Archives and History that are too delicate for general public access, Scaife and Bragg were granted special permission to research the material under the guidance of an archivist and conducted under tightly controlled conditions of security and preservation control.

Book excerpt: Composed almost entirely of Midwesterners and molded into a lean, skilled fighting machine by Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, the Army of the Tennessee marched directly into the heart of the Confederacy and won major victories at Shiloh and at the rebel strongholds of Vicksburg and Atlanta.Acclaimed historian Steven Woodworth has produced the first full consideration of this remarkable unit that has received less prestige than the famed Army of the Potomac but was responsible for the decisive victories that turned the tide of war toward the Union. The Army of the Tennessee also shaped the fortunes and futures of both Grant and Sherman, liberating them from civilian life and catapulting them onto the national stage as their triumphs grew. A thrilling account of how a cohesive fighting force is forged by the heat of battle and how a confidence born of repeated success could lead soldiers to expect “nothing but victory.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the works relating to the War Between the States, not one is designed to record the camps of the men who spent most of their time in bivouac or encampments. More men died in various camps of disease and wounds from battle than died on the battlefield. Thousand of letters were written in these camps. Many have survived fires, floods, and the indifference of generations since they reached the homes of anxious friends and relatives. They record family history, the battles, the mood of the army, troop movements, activities in camp, the sickness, the death, and the sad and happy times whenever a letter was received form home. This book is an attempt to record the camps of Georgia's troops that were named in honor of the martyrs for the lost cause, prominent citizens, past and present leaders and those who gave of their time and resources to assist the men and boys in camp. Some were named for their location, and others reflected their moods or environment.

Book excerpt: Released just this year, this fascinating recount and examination of life and survival in United States Prison Camps endured by Confederate Soldiers, this book gives rich enhancement of one's understanding of our nation's civil war history. As the title suggests, James Stallings takes the angle of focusing genealogical prison records to his home state of Georgia. However, the letters and recounts mentioned in this book, along with its historical aspects of the prisons themselves, allows the reader an excellent cross-section of Confederate Prisoners of War that suffered and died (as did their fellow countrymen in Confederate camps) in P.O.W. camps set up by the United States Army.
