Book excerpt: We present a new approach towards the construction of a genuinely multidimensional high-resolution scheme for computing steady-state solutions of the Euler equations of gas dynamics. The unique advantage of this approach is that the Gauss-Seidel relaxation is stable when applied directly to the high-resolution discrete equations, thus allowing us to construct a very efficient and simple multigrid steady-state solver. This is the only high-resolution scheme known to us that has this property. The two-dimensional scheme is presented in detail. It is formulated on triangular (structured and unstructured) meshes and can be interpreted as a genuinely two-dimensional extension of the Roe scheme. The quality of the solutions obtained using this scheme and the performance of the multigrid algorithm are illustrated by the numerical experiments. Construction of the three dimensional scheme is outlined briefly as well. Sidilkover, David Unspecified Center NAS1-19480...

Book excerpt: Some important advances took place during the last several years in the development of genuinely multidimensional upwind schemes for the compressible Euler equations. In particular, a robust, high-resolution genuinely multidimensional scheme which can be used for any of the flow regimes computations was constructed. This paper summarizes briefly these developments and outlines the fundamental advantages of this approach.

Book excerpt: One of the major achievements in computational fluid dynamics has been the development of numerical methods for simulating compressible flows, combining higher-order accuracy in smooth regions with a sharp, oscillation-free representation of embedded shocks methods and now known as "high-resolution schemes". Together with introductions from the editors written from the modern vantage point this volume collects in one place many of the most significant papers in the development of high-resolution schemes as occured at ICASE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general multigrid framework is discussed for obtaining textbook efficiency to solutions of the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in conservation law form. The general methodology relies on a distributed relaxation procedure to reduce errors in regular (smoothly varying) flow regions; separate and distinct treatments for each of the factors (elliptic and/or hyperbolic) are used to attain optimal reductions of errors. Near boundaries and discontinuities (shocks) additional local relaxations of the conservative equations are necessary. Example calculations are made for the quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations; the calculations illustrate the general procedure.

This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual center of this proceedings volume is the subject of conservation laws. Conservation laws are the most basic model of many continuum processes, and for this reason they govern the motion of fluids, solids, and plasma. They are basic to the understanding of more complex modeling issues, such as multiphase flow, chemically reacting flow, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Equations of this type also arise in novel and unexpected areas, such as the pattern recognition and image processing problem of edge enhancement and detection. The articles in this volume address the entire range of the study of conservation laws, including the fundamental mathematical theory, familiar and novel applications, and the numerical problem of finding effective computational algorithms for the solution of these problems.

Book excerpt: In this volume, designed for engineers and scientists working in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), experts offer assessments of the capabilities of CFD, highlight some fundamental issues and barriers, and propose novel approaches to overcome these problems. They also offer new avenues for research in traditional and non-traditional disciplines. The scope of the papers ranges from the scholarly to the practical. This book is distinguished from earlier surveys by its emphasis on the problems facing CFD and by its focus on non-traditional applications of CFD techniques. There have been several significant developments in CFD since the last workshop held in 1990 and this book brings together the key developments in a single unified volume.
