Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research, funded by the Department of Energy's Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative Fellowship, was focused on developing a new approach to studying the nuclear fuel cycle: instead of using the trial and error approach currently used in actinide management studies in which reactors are designed and then their performance is evaluated, the methodology developed here first identified relevant fuel cycle objectives like minimizing decay heat production in a repository, minimizing Pu-239 content in used fuel, etc. and then used optimization to determine the best way to reach these goals. The first half of this research was devoted to identifying optimal flux spectra for irradiating used nuclear fuel from light water reactors to meet fuel cycle objectives like those mentioned above. This was accomplished by applying the simulated annealing optimization methodology to a simple matrix exponential depletion code written in Fortran using cross sections generated from the SCALE code system. Since flux spectra cannot be shaped arbitrarily, the second half of this research applied the same methodology to material composition of fast reactor target assemblies to find optimal designs for minimizing the integrated decay heat production over various timescales. The neutronics calculations were performed using modules from SCALE and ERANOS, a French fast reactor transport code. The results of this project showed that a thermal flux spectrum is much more effective for transmuting used nuclear fuel. In the spectral optimization study, it was found that a thermal flux spectrum is approximately five times more effective at reducing long-term decay heat production than a fast flux spectrum. This conclusion was reinforced by the results of the target assembly material optimization study, which found that by adding an efficient moderator to a target assembly designed for minor actinide transmutation, the amount of decay heat generated over 10,000 years of cooling can be reduced by over 50% through a single pass in a fast reactor without exceeding standard cladding fluence limits.

Book Synopsis An Optimization Method for Matched Abundance-ratio Cascades by Varying the Key Weight by : Richard Dale Harvey

This book was released on 2017 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of multicomponent isotope separation in matched abundance-ratio cascades (MARC) has been well established by Cohen, de la Garza, von Halle, and others. Because separation factors of different isotopes vary in the same separator, isotopic weight fractions cannot be matched in the same sense as in a two-component ideal system. Therefore, the abundance ratios of the desired isotope and a selected key isotope are matched, hence the name. These ratios are matched by choosing a key weight between the two selected components of separation. Desirable stable isotopes for separation can exist as minor components of a natural, multicomponent isotope system. Behaviors of these isotopes vary within the cascade depending on the relative weight, relative fractions, and relative location in the sequence of isotopes. Various theoretical methods have been developed to simplify analysis and to optimize isotopic separation within a cascade. The possibility of varying key weights within a cascade for optimization was first proposed as future work by de la Garza in 1963, but only a few results have been published showing that varying the key weights can improve efficiency in a theoretical cascade. This dissertation will review the theory of matched abundance-ratio cascades; examine the behavior of individual isotopes within the cascade; and propose concepts and a methodology for optimizing a cascade by varying the key weight within the cascade.
Book Synopsis Optimization of Rastered Beam for Increased Isotope Production at LANSCE by : Nicholas Ha
Download or read book Optimization of Rastered Beam for Increased Isotope Production at LANSCE written by Nicholas Ha and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Isotope Production Facility (IPF) receives pulsed H+ beam from the accelerator at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) to produce isotopes for various research and medical uses. Work over 2 summers has been conducted to improve diagnostics, reliability, and control for equipment on the IPF beamline, as well as to optimize beam delivered to IPF to increase isotope yield. This second goal is the subject of this document. Specifically, it is desired to maximize beam delivery onto a target without risking damage to the target window or spill too much beam outside a specified aperture. A specified beam profile and repeating beam raster pattern of concentric circles is currently being used to achieve this. The goal addressed here is to determine an improved beam profile and raster pattern. While a specific answer is needed for certain operation conditions, a general method is even better. A constrained optimization problem is formulated, and several approaches for solving it are discussed. It is found that with appropriate design of cost function, a Gradient Descent algorithm is effective at making improvements to a good initial guess. A bounded Extremum Seeking algorithm also shows some effectiveness, while some unbounded versions did not show effectiveness for this problem. The problem formulation, models, methods, results, are presented. They show significant potential to advance IPF's goals of higher isotope production yield.
