Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people enter the Kingdom of God with little or no prior knowledge of the Bible or the books of the Bible. Church jargon can be very confusing and difficult to understand for many who are newcomers. This study will assist those who are especially new in the Kingdom with becoming familiar with the Bible by empowering those students with a simple but strong and powerful overview of the books of the Bible. The writer designed this study to stimulate the students' spiritual intellect without overwhelming them, but at the same time offering them the challenge of learning God's Word using a most unique and simplistic method. Queen Kirkwood-Hatchett was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi and raised in Caruthersville, Missouri. At age 16, her family relocated to Mt. Vernon, Illinois where she graduated from Rend Lake College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice. She is also a graduate of the Mega School of Theology. After graduating from SIU-C, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, but not before publishing her first book, "From the Heart." Her most famous poem, Crack, the Drug from Hell, from her first publication, opened many doors for her. She has ministered to the hurting and lost in congregations throughout northern and southern Illinois. She was inspired to write "A General Study of the Books of the Bible" after many years of studying God's Word, coupled with a strong passion for the Word of God. She served in the ministry at her local church in Illinois as Sunday school teacher, choir member, and director of a 60-children choir. She has received a host of plaques, awards, and certificates for her dedication to the community and church, her writings, and volunteer services in both Illinois and Ohio. Queen Kirkwood-Hatchett is the mother of three children, and grandmother of two. She discovered her gift to write while living in Chicago and before giving her life to Christ. She was motivated to put together such a book from teaching Sunday school in Illinois. After reading, studying, and teaching from other authors' materials, she realized that she was gifted to do the same, as God had given her the unique ability to create, write, and organize material for study.

After the sudden death of their three-year-old son, Cameron Cole and his wife found themselves clinging to Christ through twelve key theological truths—truths that became their lifeline in the midst of unthinkable grief. Weaving together their own story of tragic loss and abiding faith, Cole explores these twelve life-giving truths to offer hope and comfort to those in the midst of tragedy.

And yet, there is a surprising lack of resources written specifically for youth workers focused on viewing all aspects of youth ministry through a gospel-focused lens. Featuring contributions from a host of experienced youth workers from a wide variety of churches, this how-to manual offers guidance related to every facet of youth ministry, from planning short-term mission trips to working with parents. Theologically rooted yet eminently practical, this handbook will equip youth leaders to effectively shepherd the young people under their care—training them to live faithfully in their homes, churches, and schools.

Book excerpt: The idea of the Bible as "Holy Scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from God, has prevailed in Western society for some time. And while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of Christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of the text. Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. He argues that it must be read in its historical context-- from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. -- adapted from jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the most important writings by Mark Twain in which he used biblical settings, themes, and figures. Featuring Twain's singular portrayals of God, Adam, Eve, Satan, Methuselah, Shem, St. Peter, and others, the writings stand among Twain's most imaginative expressions of his views on human nature and humankind's relation to the Creator and the universe. Composed over four decades (1871-1910), the writings range from farce to fantasy to satire, each one bearing the mark of Twain's unmistakable wit and insight. Among the many delights in store for readers are Adam and Eve's divergent accounts of their domestic troubles; Methuselah's discussion of an ancient version of baseball, complete with a parody of baseball jargon; Shem's hand-wringing account of how material shortages and labor troubles were hampering the progress of the ark his father, Noah, was building; a description of the disruptive actions of the fire-and-brimstone evangelist Sam Jones upon arriving in heaven; Captain Stormfield's revelations of what heaven is really like; Satan's musings on our puerile concepts of the afterlife; and Twain's advice on how to dress and tip properly in heaven. Twain's humor, however, is never gratuitous. As readers laugh their way through this volume, they will find ample evidence of Twain's concerns about scriptural fallacies and inconsistencies, the Bible's rather flat portrayal of important characters, and our limited notions about the nature and meaning of our own--and God's--existence. Many of the pieces in this collection, even the most lighthearted, might still be considered controversial; of some of the darker pieces, Twain himself acknowledged that they would be heretical in any age. Moreover, these writings are valuable cultural artifacts of a time when, across the Western world, fundamental religious beliefs were being called into question by the precepts of Darwinism and the rapid advances of science and technology. Several of this volume's selections are previously unpublished; others, like Letters from the Earth, are classics. Virtually all have been newly edited to reflect as closely as possible Twain's final intentions for their form and content. For serious Twain devotees, editors Howard G. Baetzhold and Joseph B. McCullough have supplied an abundance of background material on the writings, including details on the history of their composition, publication, and relevance to the Twain canon.
