Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of the Kemp and Kempe Families of Great Britain and Her Colonies: With Arms, Pedigrees, Portraits, Illustrations of Seats, Foundations, Chantries, Monuments, Documents, Old Jewels, Curios, &C I was on a visit to an elderly cousin, living near Ashford, in 1896, when, finding that the topics of modern conversation failed to interest him, I sought something to read in an old library adjacent, of which my relative was trustee. My first inspection of the Shelves inclined me to think that the ancient volumes with which they Were loaded would afford me no. Entertainment, for I was neither an antiquarian nor interested in history or genealogy. I came, however, to a copy of Hasted's History of Kent, which I took down with some curiosity as to what it might say about the places of interest around my cousin's home, and finding thati had thus dropped upon an account of a great man of my own name - Archbishop Kemp - I read page after page concerning him and his relations. This exhausted I turned to'the index for the name of Kemp in order to discover more information concerning my namesakes. Download or read book Kempe written by Adrian Barlow and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kempe offers a radical revaluation of the life, work and reputation of Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907), one of the most remarkable and influential figures in late Victorian and Edwardian church art. Kempe's name became synonymous with a distinctive style of stained glass, furnishing and decoration deriving from late mediaeval and early Renaissance models. To this day, his hand can be seen in churches and cathedrals worldwide. Drawing on newly available archive material, Adrian Barlow evaluates Kempe's achievement in creating a Studio or School of artists and craftsmen who interpreted his designs and remained fiercely loyal to his aesthetic and religious ideals. He assesses his legacy and reputation today, as well as exploring his networks of patrons and influence, which stretched from the Royal Family and the Church of England hierarchy to the literary and artistic beau monde. These networks intersected at Kempe's stunning Sussex country house, Old Place, his 'Palace of Art'. Created to embody his ideals of beauty and history, it holds the key to understanding his contradictory personality, his public and private faces. This book will appeal to everyone interested in Victorian art in general and stained glass in particular. Detailed and wide-ranging, Kempe tells a compelling story.
