Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of Commerce In writing this book I have had constantly in mind the needs of the student. I have tried, therefore, to tell the story of commerce in a systematic manner, in order that the reader may get clear-cut and accurate pictures of the commercial growth and decay of separate nations, and an understanding of the forces, industrial, racial, and climatic, which have contributed to the steady expansion of the world's trade. A history of the world's commerce is a story of much more than international barter and sale. A nation's commerce is born of its industry and is part of its struggle for the necessaries, the comforts, and the luxuries of life. It prospers in peace and is destroyed by war. A historian of the world's commerce, therefore, has no lack of material possessing the greatest human interest. Every war changes the current of his narrative and every period of peace adds to the importance of his subject. If this book is dull, it will be because I have failed to grasp the dramatic elements which the subject presents. The growth of industrial power in the United States on account of its efficient and enlightened labor, its natural resources, its accumulating capital, and its inventive genius, is making the subject of commerce of present and vital significance in this country. In response to a popular demand it is being given a place in the curricula of our high schools and colleges. I have accordingly revised the part Of this book covering the recent'period to close the narrative at that date, and have added another part, covering the history Of commerce in the war and in the two or three years Of peace immediately following. The commerce Of the great nations of the world has departed since 1914 far from its accustomed paths and forms. In my attempt to make intelligible the commercial changes Of the time I have had to take account Of matters in public finance, currency and foreign exchange which are usually treated apart from the history Of international trade. I have thought it better, by touching on these outside subjects, to show the reasons for the course which commerce has followed, rather than to omit the reasons because they are hard for the student Of the history of commerce to understand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Commerce and Industry This book is an outgrowth of eleven years' experience in teaching history to commercial classes at the Philadelphia Cen tral High School. In preparing it the aim has been the same as the aim Of the teaching: viz., to present the essentials of his tory from the commercial and industrial point of view. The purpose has been to furnish the history Of a great movement or tendency rather than the history of nations. It will be Obvious to those who use the book that the 'writer's interests have been primarily in commercial history. The writer accepts as true a recent statement Of Canon Hen son, that knowledge Oi the past is a great emancipating power Of the present, and that ignorance Of the past is one of the present's greatest curses. History treated as a record of social progress may become one of the great cementing forces Of society. With what aspect of the past shall history deal? It is quite correct to say that history is the outgrowth of the age in which it is written and that the various interpretations which have been given it are but reflections Of the varying and dominant interests Of society. Not many years ago, Edward A. F ree man's famous dictum, history is past politics and politics are present history, found general acceptance; but this sentiment is no longer generally approved. Clearly there is at present a desire to select those interests Of the past which most bear on the present. For a considerable time, the tendency has been Obvious for both writers and teachers to emphasize economic and social history rather than the history Of war or Of the evolu tion Of governmental systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commerce and the Empire After working many years for Free Trade in Australia I feel emboldened to make an effort in the wider field of the Empire. The time has arrived when, in my judgment, Free Traders in all the self-governing Colonies should make an effort to bring their respective parts of the Empire into line with British fiscal policy. The task is by no means so difficult as some people think; race sympathy is making it easier every year; and the very need of revenue makes the task less instead of more difficult, since it is easier to obtain revenue without than it is with restriction. The necessity of dealing with the preferential phase of the subject has caused me to hurry the publishing, and consequently the book is less complete in many respects than I intended. The controversy with regard to preferential duties will have one good result: it will lead to a better general knowledge of the whole subject, and will, therefore, pave the way for the Self-Governing Colonies, one after another, to raise the Free Trade flag. A British Free Trade Empire is a noble object for which to fight. During a period of about nine months, in 1900-1901, immediately preceding the first Federal Election in the Australian Commonwealth, I published a weekly paper, under the title of Our Country, dealing solely with the fiscal controversy. The greatest educational step of the colony was taken in 1705, when Andrew Clark, an Englishman, came over and Opened the first public school. There were then persons in New York. The Upas-tree of the century was planted in 1709, when the first slave-mart was Opened at the foot of Wall Street slip, on the site Of the old block house. This same year may also be said to have been the first plank in the financial history of this city, paper money having then been introduced. Broadway, between Maiden Lane and what is now City Hall Park, was laid out in 1712. The negro oppression riot also burst forth again in that year. There were six city policemen (they were known as watchmen). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Commercial History Tins small volume is the outcome of several years' experience in the teaching of commercial history to adults at the Polytechnic School of Commerce, Regent Street. London. It is an attempt to provide a concise account of the way in which. From very simple beginnings, commerce has attained to its present astounding magnitude, and how, in the course of tirne, it has passed through various stages of development which. In turn, have led to the transference from one nation to another of commercial supremacy. To-day, when so much interest is being taken in commercial education, it seems unnecessary to emphasize the importance to the commercial aspirant of the combination of general education with technical kiiowlc'jl'e. It is not sufficient for a business man to know merely the routine of his branch of work: he must also aspire to become a good citizen who has reflected upon the historical connec tion of things he must also learn to form an (pinion of his own, and be able to draw from the past conclusions concerning the future. Especially should we expect the educated business man to possess clear ideas as to the nature, development, and general economic significance of his own calling. In this case, he will be able to judge more exactly the phenomena of modern business life, since he will have already observed the conditions of their origin in far distant periods of commercial history Moter yer, the last few generations have witnessed an enormous grows; of specialization, so that it now requires great effort to beromefax -'ar with a single branch of commercial activity. Tho study of commercial history has thus become more essential for the fixture business man if he is to keep in touch with, am is retain iust conception of, the ever-changing forms of comrm c'ial intercourse. In conclusion, it is my pleasant duty to thank my friend and colleague, Mr. W. J. Bradley, e.sc., for his kind assistance in reading the proofs for me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Foreign Affairs Best Book of the Year: “Tells the history of American trade policy . . . [A] grand narrative [that] also debunks trade-policy myths.” —Economist Should the United States be open to commerce with other countries, or should it protect domestic industries from foreign competition? This question has been the source of bitter political conflict throughout American history. Such conflict was inevitable, James Madison argued in the Federalist Papers, because trade policy involves clashing economic interests. The struggle between the winners and losers from trade has always been fierce because dollars and jobs are at stake: depending on what policy is chosen, some industries, farmers, and workers will prosper, while others will suffer. Douglas A. Irwin’s Clashing over Commerce is the most authoritative and comprehensive history of US trade policy to date, offering a clear picture of the various economic and political forces that have shaped it. From the start, trade policy divided the nation—first when Thomas Jefferson declared an embargo on all foreign trade and then when South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union over excessive taxes on imports. The Civil War saw a shift toward protectionism, which then came under constant political attack. Then, controversy over the Smoot-Hawley tariff during the Great Depression led to a policy shift toward freer trade, involving trade agreements that eventually produced the World Trade Organization. Irwin makes sense of this turbulent history by showing how different economic interests tend to be grouped geographically, meaning that every proposed policy change found ready champions and opponents in Congress. Deeply researched and rich with insight and detail, Clashing over Commerce provides valuable and enduring insights into US trade policy past and present. “Combines scholarly analysis with a historian’s eye for trends and colorful details . . . readable and illuminating, for the trade expert and for all Americans wanting a deeper understanding of America’s evolving role in the global economy.” —National Review “Magisterial.” —Foreign Affairs
