Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General English and German Glossary, or Collection of Words, Phrases, Names, Customs, Proverbs, &C., Which Occur in the Works of English and Scotch Poets: From the Time of Chaucer to the Present Century This work being only a glossary, and not a dictionary, it was thought unnecessary to indicate the parts of speech, since but few readers of english poetry think of grammatical definitions on meeting with obsolete or obscure words, and the learned need no such indications. As many words were formerly used in a sense very different from that found in the dictionaries of the present time, (for example, the word the obsolete sense is here given, which will enable the reader to understand the early writers of english poetry. In order to render the work more compendious, the english adjectives and adverbs are mostly placed together, they being most commonly expressed in german in the same terms: the verbs and substantives, as likewise the adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions, of the same form in english are not separated, but have their german explanations together: for the sake of brevity also no etymology has been added. The abbreviations refer to the authors, who have used the words and phrases, or to the works in which they occur. This glossary being compiled, not only for the learned, who usually have access to the same sources and authorities, which I have consulted, but rather with a view to assist readers of every description in the perusal of english and scotch poetry, my only wish in making the necessary researches has been merely to render my efforts generally useful, as the sole reward for the atten tion I have devoted to this collection during a period of sixteen years.
