Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogical Memoir of the Backus Family: With the Private Journal of James Backus, Together With His Correspondence Bearing on the First Settlement of Ohio, at Marieta, in 1788 This little volume, although primarily a family memorial, will nevertheless be interesting to the general reader, from the fact that many letters, documents and other articles are inserted, illustrating the spirit and character of the times in which they were written. Of these, the private journal and correspondence of James Backus is, perhaps, the most instructive and interesting. The journal, with a few breaks, covers a period of about three years, and was written on the spot where occurred one of the most important events in the country's history, - the settlement of Ohio, at Marietta, April 7, 1788. The journal, and also the correspondence, is full of interesting facts connected with this event, James Backus being one of the first settlers. The papers of Elijah Backus, bearing on another critical time in the country's history - the period of the Revolution and the period just before - is also very interesting. We see by these papers the character of the people who secured for us our independence, and the trying times through which they passed. Elijah Backus seems to have been very active at that time, and his papers throw a strong light on the character of the people and the times. These papers have been lying idle for a hundred years and more, and it is one of the objects of priming this book to preserve and make public these records, which, although they may not give any new points on the history of the country, yet may serve to corroborate the statements of other historians, and serve to fix some of the uncertain points. As a family memorial, this volume docs not pretend to be exhaustive. In fact, within the limits of this little book it would be impossible to even mention every member of so large and widely a scattered family So it has been thought best to follow the Norwich branch, that of the second William. Of his two children who settled in Norwich, we have followed only the line of Joseph. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The crossing of America's first great divide—the Appalachian Mountains—has been a source of much fascination but has received little attention from modern historians. In the eighteenth century, the Wilderness Road and Ohio River routes into Kentucky presented daunting natural barriers and the threat of Indian attack. Running Mad for Kentucky brings this adventure to life. Primarily a collection of travel diaries, it includes day-to-day accounts that illustrate the dangers thousands of Americans, adult and child, black and white, endured to establish roots in the wilderness. Ellen Eslinger's vivid and extensive introductory essay draws on numerous diaries, letters, and oral histories of trans-Appalachian travelers to examine the historic consequences of the journey, a pivotal point in the saga of the continent's indigenous people. The book demonstrates how the fabled soil of Kentucky captured the imagination of a young nation.

Book excerpt: Eighteenth and nineteenth century European, British and American newspapers constitute a rich and largely untapped source of contemporary, often eyewitness accounts of historical events and opinions concerning Iran from the late Safavid (1712) through the Qajar (c. 1797-1920) period. This study collects and annotates thousands of articles published in the Colonial and early Republican American newspapers, from the first mention of events in Persia in the American press (1712) to the death of Mohammad Shah (1848), unlocking for the first time a wealth of information on Iran and its place in the world during the 18th and early 19th century.

Book excerpt: After the American Revolution, land speculators in the United States desired the bottom portion of the current state of Ohio, with the full Northwest Territory being the ultimate prize. Encompassing approximately 200 million acres, gaining this territory became a priority for the developing United Colonies. This land was ceded to the United Colonies, now the United States, when the British government signed the Treaty of Peace in 1783. Focusing on the first decade after the Revolution, this book explains the United States' seizure of territory in Ohio from the Native People who had no desire or intention of parting with their land. The Northwest Ordinance is discussed as a key event influencing how the United States would develop since this act created the desirable Northwest Territory. How the young republic faced the challenge of gaining this territory from the Natives determined exactly what kind of nation it would become.
