Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If one street in America can claim to be the most infamous, it is surely Forty-second Street. Once known for its peep shows, street corner hustlers, and movie houses, Forty-second Street has been overwhelmed by the quest for safety - from safe sex and safe neighborhoods to safe cities and safe relationships. Now defined by corporate theme stores and large, neon-lit cafes, Forty-second Street has, in effect, become a family tourist attraction for visitors from Berlin, Tokyo, Westchester County, and the New Jersey suburbs." "Samuel R. Delany sees a disappearance, not only of the old Times Square, but of the complex social relationships that developed there; the points of contact between people of different classes and races in a public space. In Times Square Red, Times Square Blue, Delany tackles the question of why public restrooms, peep shows, and tree-filled parks are necessary to a city's physical and psychological landscape." "Times Square Red, Times Square Blue paints a portrait of a society dismantling the institutions that promote communication between classes and disguising its fears of cross-class contact as "family values"." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: Twentieth anniversary edition of a landmark book that cataloged a vibrant but disappearing neighborhood in New York City In the two decades that preceded the original publication of Times Square Red, Times Square Blue, Forty-second Street, then the most infamous street in America, was being remade into a sanitized tourist haven. In the forced disappearance of porn theaters, peep shows, and street hustlers to make room for a Disney store, a children’s theater, and large, neon-lit cafes, Samuel R. Delany saw a disappearance, not only of the old Times Square, but of the complex social relationships that developed there. Samuel R. Delany bore witness to the dismantling of the institutions that promoted points of contact between people of different classes and races in a public space, and in this hybrid text, argues for the necessity of public restrooms and tree-filled parks to a city's physical and psychological landscape. This twentieth anniversary edition includes a new foreword by Robert Reid-Pharr that traces the importance and continued resonances of Samuel R. Delany’s groundbreaking Times Square Red, Times Square Blue.

Voiced and performed by a plethora of actors’ who details Americas transforming events. What is fashioned is an American population both angelic and diabolical too often unable to discern one from the other. Americans a pampered people for whom more is never enough, easily roused to anxiety and reconciled to the paradoxical belief that God loves America but Satan keeps us safe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The toughest, most darkly comic, consistently superior American procedural on the market” takes on the greatest mystery of all: the death of Jimmy Hoffa (Booklist). When an eager young historian asks Detroit police detective “Fang” Mulheisen for the real story of Grootka—his legendary law-enforcement mentor—the question leads him to uncover his late friend’s notebooks. And with them, Mulheisen may also have stumbled upon the answer to one of the biggest unanswered questions in American history . . . What happened to Jimmy Hoffa? The notebooks tell an incredible story in which the supposedly late labor leader was, in fact, about to meet his end when he was rescued by a gifted musician and spirited into hiding in the wilderness of northern Michigan. More than that, the past Grootka describes may be related to a deadly mystery in present-day Detroit. With this action-packed novel spanning decades of cops and criminals, “Jackson remains a master of irreverent, hard-boiled comedy” (Publishers Weekly).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the significance of late twentieth century and early twenty first century American fiction written in response to the AIDS crisis and interrogates how sexual identity is depicted and constructed textually. Pearl develops Freudian psychoanalytic theory in a complex account of the ways in which grief is expressed and worked out in literature, showing how key texts from the AIDS crisis by authors such as Edmund White, Michael Cunningham, Eve Sedgwick – and also, later, the archives of The ACT UP Oral History Project - lie both within the tradition of gay writing and a postmodernist poetics. The book demonstrates how literary texts both expose and construct personal identity, how they expose and produce sexual identities, and how gay and queer identities were written onto the page, but also constructed and consolidated by these very texts. Pearl argues that the division between realist and postmodern, and gay and queer, respectively, is determined by whether the experience expressed and accounted is mediated through the psychoanalytic categories of mourning or melancholia, and is marked by a kind of coherence or chaos in the texts themselves. This study presents an important development in scholarly work in gay literary studies, queer theory, and AIDS representation.
