This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1921, A Gallant of Lorraine: Franois, Seigneur de Bassompierre, Marquis D'harouel, Marchal de France (1579-1646) [Volume 1 of 2] contains the first 24 chapters of this two-volume book. A SHORT BIOGRAPHY of FRANOIS DE BASSOMPIERREFranois de Bassompierre (12 April 1579 - 12 October 1646) was a French courtier. The son of Christophe de Bassompierre (1547-1596), he was born at the castle of Harou in Lorraine. He was descended from an old family which had for generations served the dukes of Burgundy and Lorraine, and after being educated with his brothers in Bavaria and Italy, was introduced to the court of King Henry IV of France in 1598. He became a great favourite of the king and shared to the full in the dissipations of court life. In 1600, he took part in the brief campaign in Savoy, and in 1603 fought in Hungary against the Turks for emperor Rudolf II.- Wikipedia EXCERPT FROM A Gallant of Lorraine: Franois, Seigneur de Bassompierre, Marquis D'harouel, Marchal de France (1579-1646) PREFATORY NOTE ALTHOUGH the Mmoires of the Marchal de Bassompierre are acknowledged to be one of the chief authorities for the history of France during the early part of the seventeenth century, they have never been translated into English, nor, if we except the charming but all too brief sketch of the marshal by Comte Boudet de Puymaigre in his Potes et Romanciers de la Lorraine (Paris, 1848), has any biography of their author yet been attempted. That such should be the case is certainly very surprising, since seldom can a man have led so eventful a life, or played so many different parts with distinction, as did Franois de Bassompierre. Soldier, courtier, diplomatist, gallant and wit, he was to the Courts of Henri IV and Louis XIII very much what the celebrated Marchal de Richelieu was to that of Louis XV, and when on that fatal February day in 1631 the gates of the Bastille closed upon him, not to reopen for twelve long years, one of the most interesting careers in French history practically terminated. In my endeavour to give a full and authentic account of this career, I have naturally found my chief source of information in Bassompierre's own Mmoires, which he wrote, or rather arranged and revised, during his imprisonment in the Bastille; but I have also consulted a large number of other works, both contemporary and modern. Most of these are mentioned either in the text or the footnotes, but I desire to take this opportunity of acknowledging my great indebtedness to the admirable notes of the Marquis de Chantrac, who so ably edited the edition of the marshal's Mmoires published by the Socit de l'Histoire de France.H. Clayton and published by TINSLEY BROTHERS. This book was released on 1879 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Female Warriors (Volume 1 of 2) : Memorials of Female Valour and Heroism, from the Mythological Ages to the Present Era The exception is supposed to prove the rule. A woman may be forgiven for defying Popular Prejudice, if she is very pretty, very silly, and very wicked. Popular Prejudice has the natural instinct of yielding to any little weakness that may be imagined to flatter a Man. But Popular Prejudice is superbly angry with a woman who is perhaps not pretty, yet ventures to claim good sense and personal will, and who may be innately good. Popular Prejudice is the fast friend of lean-faced Envy; and woe betide the woman (or even the man) who would presume to sit down at the board of these allies uninvited. Popular Prejudice, having decided that woman is a poor, weak creature, credulous, easily influenced, holds that she is of necessity timid; that if she were allowed as much as a voice in the government of her native country, she would stand appalled if war were even hinted at. If it be proved by hard facts that woman is not a poor, weak creature, then she must be reprimanded as being masculine. To brand a woman as being masculine, is supposed to be quite sufficient to drive her cowering back to her 'broidery-frame and her lute. Popular Prejudice abhors hard facts, and rarely reads history. Yet nobody can deny that facts are stubborn things, or that the world rolls calmly round even when wars, rumours of wars, revolutions, and counter-revolutions, are raging in every quarter and sub-division of its surface. War is, undoubtedly, a horrid alternative to the average woman, and she shrinks from it—as the average man shrinks. But, walking down the serried ranks of history, we find strange records of feminine bravery; as we might discover singular instances of masculine cowardice, if we searched far enough.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gallant of Lorraine, Vol. 2 of 2: Francois, Seigneur De Bassompierre, Marquis D'harouel, Marechal De France (1579-1646) Offer of Schomberg, Saint-Geran and Marillac to take Montauban within twelve days - Advice of Pere Arnoux - Diplomacy of Bassom-pierre - A humiliating fiasco - A second attempt meets with no better success - Bassompierre counsels the King to raise the siege, and it is decided to follow his advice - General exasperation against Luynes - Louis XIII begins to grow weary of his favourite - Conversation of the King with Bassompierre - The latter warns Luynes that he " does not sufficiently cultivate the good graces of the King " - Reply of the Constable - Louis XIII twits Luynes with the love of the Due de Chevreuse for his wife - Puisieux, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Pirc Arnoux, the King's Jesuit confessor, conspire against the Constable - Disgrace of the latter - Bassompierre, at the head of the bulk of the Royal forces, lays siege to Monheurt - A perilous situation - Bassompierre falls ill of fever - He leaves the army and sets out for La Reole - He is taken seriously ill at Marmande - His three doctors - Approach of the enemy - Refusal of the townsfolk to admit him and his suite into the town - A terrible night - He recovers and proceeds to Bordeaux - Death of the Constable before Monheurt. During the next few days some progress was made by the Guards at Ville-Nouvelle; but the other two divisions seemed able to do little or nothing; while the garrison, strengthened by the accession of several hundred first-class fighting men, harassed them incessantly. On October 4, Louis XIII summoned another council of war at Picqueos, to which Bassompierre went. On his arrival he was met by Pere Arnoux, the King's Jesuit confessor, who said to him: "Well, Monsieur, Montauban is going to be given, so they say, to him who offers the lowest price for it, as they give the public works in France. In how many days do you offer to take it?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
