However, the Ministry of Transportation for Ontario permits the use of CKD only in non-frost-susceptible zones since CKD may cause heaving due to a high proportion of silt size particles in the CKD. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the freeze-thaw behaviour of CKD-treated soils. The experimental procedure consisted of two unidirectional freeze-thaw cycles over a period of five days. The test material was Halton till treated with CKD at different dosages. The results indicate that the addition of CKD up to 30% by dry weight does not alter the frost susceptibility of CKD/soil mixtures. At 40% CKD, mixtures show an increase in frost heave.
