Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical introduction to the analysis of data collected from reliability studies offers clear, detailed explanations of the best and most up-to-date techniques available. Topics include survival analysis with covariates, the assessment of systems performance, reliability growth models, dependency (which encompasses both engineering and statistical approaches), and practical aspects of analysis. A wealth of interesting case studies appear throughout the text, lending "real-world" examples to the more theoretical discussions. Throughout, the authors stress the need for investigators to understand the background and nature of their data if they are to select the most appropriate analysis method. They also provide in-depth treatments of the mathematical and statistical bases underlying each technique. Accessible and comprehensive, the book will be welcomed by students, professionals, and statisticians who are interested in the practical aspects of reliability data analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates a number of modelling and computational techniques for addressing relevant issues in reliability and risk analysis. In particular, it provides: i) a basic illustration of some methods used in reliability and risk analysis for modelling the stochastic failure and repair behaviour of systems, e.g. the Markov and Monte Carlo simulation methods; ii) an introduction to Genetic Algorithms, tailored to their application for RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) optimization; iii) an introduction to key issues of system reliability and risk analysis, like dependent failures and importance measures; and iv) a presentation of the issue of uncertainty and of the techniques of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis used in support of reliability and risk analysis. The book provides a technical basis for senior undergraduate or graduate courses and a reference for researchers and practitioners in the field of reliability and risk analysis. Several practical examples are included to demonstrate the application of the concepts and techniques in practice.

Book excerpt: On behalf of the Organising Committee of the 11th ARTS I would like to welcome all the delegates, session chairpersons and authors. I particularly welcome new delegates, delegates from mainland Europe and from other countries. At the time of the last symposium, our tenth anniversary, we looked back on the growth of the symposium and the support it had received from so many people. Not least was the support given by Mrs Ruth Campbell who, between this symposium and the last, has retired from the National Centre of Systems Reliability. The Organising Committee would hereby like to acknowledge a very special debt of gratitude, over many years, to Ruth. Our gratitude also goes to Dr A. Z. Keller of the University of Bradford, the Organising Committee Chairman at the 10th Symposium, our President for 11th ARTS and, since the beginning, a staunch supporter of the ARTS. Our thanks go to Mme A. Camino of Electricite de France for being our after-dinner speaker and to Mr A. J. Bourne for being our keynote speaker. Their speeches have been keenly anticipated. Behind the symposium, the detailed and hard work of the administrative staff of the National Centre of Systems Reliability continues even after it has ended. Our thanks go to them, particularly, and to the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and Bradford for their consistent support to the symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of system reliability evaluation has never been so extensively and incisively discussed as in the present volume. The book fills a gap in the existing literature on the subject by highlighting the shortcomings of the current state-of-the-art and focusing on on-going efforts aimed at seeking better models, improved solutions and alternative approaches to the problem of system reliability evaluation. The book's foremost objective is to provide an insight into developments that are likely to revolutionize the art and science in the near future. At the same time it will help serve as a benchmark for the reader not only to understand and appreciate the newer developments but to profitably guide him in reorienting his efforts. This book will be valuable for people working in various industries, research organizations, particularly in electrical and electronics, defence, nuclear, chemical, space and communciation systems. It will also be useful for serious-minded students, teachers, and for the laboratories of educational institutions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Functional and Logic Programming (FLOPS 2004), held in Nara, Japan, April 7-9, 2004 at the New Public Hall, Nara. FLOPS is a forum for research on all issues concerning functional programming and logic programming. In particular it aims to stimulate the cross-fertilization as well as the integration of the two paradigms. The previous FLOPS meetings took place in Fuji-Susono (1995), Shonan (1996), Kyoto (1998), Tsukuba (1999), Tokyo(2001)and Aizu (2002). The proceedings of FLOPS 1999,FLOPS 2001 and FLOPS 2002 were published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, as volumes 1722, 2024 and 2441, respectively. In response to the call for papers, 55 papers were submitted by authors from 1 Australia (1), Austria (1), Canada (1), China (4), Denmark (2), Estonia (), 2 1 1 France (3), Germany (4), Italy (1), Japan (15), the Netherlands (1), Oman 2 4 1 1 (1), Portugal (), Singapore (2), Spain (8), UK (3), and USA (6). Each paper 2 4 was reviewed by at least three program committee members with the help of expert external reviewers. The program committee meeting was conducted electronically for a period of 2 weeks in December 2003. After careful and thorough discussion, the program committee selected 18 papers (33%) for presentation at the conference. In addition to the 18 contributed papers, the symposium included talks by three invited speakers: Masami Hagiya (University of Tokyo), Carsten Schur · mann (Yale University), and Peter Selinger (University of Ottawa).

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Reliability, Maintenance, and System Safety through Mathematical Modeling discusses the many factors affect reliability and performance, including engineering design, materials, manufacturing, operations, maintenance, and many more. Reliability is one of the fundamental criteria in engineering systems design, with maintenance serving as a way to support reliability throughout a system's life. Addressing these issues requires information, modeling, analysis and testing. Different techniques are proposed and implemented to help readers analyze various behavior measures (in terms of the functioning and performance) of systems. - Enables mathematicians to convert any process or system into a model that can be analyzed through a specific technique - Examines reliability and mathematical modeling in a variety of disciplines, unlike competitors which typically examine only one - Includes a table of contents with simple to complex examples, starting with basic models and then refining modeling approaches step-by-step

These factors cannot be considered in isolation of each other. This handbook considers all aspects of performability engineering. The book provides a holistic view of the entire life cycle of activities of the product, along with the associated cost of environmental preservation at each stage, while maximizing the performance.
