Book excerpt: Hard work and chance are nearly always among the deciding factors in finding new, important, and productive paleontological localities. Fossil locality predictive models have the potential to reduce unproductive field time and maximize hard work thus increasing the chances researchers have to find important localities. This study uses remotely sensed data to design and test a fossil locality predictive model for the Early Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation. Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS data from known localities were summarized, reclassified and used in a weighted suitability analysis to categorize fossil locality potential of the study area. Field work was conducted to test model functionality. Field observations were used to refine the weighted suitability analysis. Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS data alone offers a less accurate prescription of fossil locality potential. Additional physical and environmental factors play a role in determining the chance of finding fossils. Slope degree and aspect data from known localities were summarized and analyzed to further refine the model. The usefulness of fossil locality predictive models is dependent upon the quality of input data and methods used to determine fossil locality potential. In order to fully determine the quality of a fossil locality predictive model, field work testing the model must be conducted.

Book excerpt: This 20 page report describes the stratigraphy of the Cedar Mountain and Dakota formations in and around Dinosaur National Monument in northeast Utah and includes new palynology and radiometric age data. The contract between these formations is unconformable in which the Dakota formation has incised into the underlying Cedar Mountain formation. Locally, the Dakota includes a basal marine mudstone and shale unit that contains late Albian dinoflagellate cysts, which represents peak sea level during the Kiowa-Skull Creek depositional cycle and indicates the first marine incursion of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway into Utah.

Book excerpt: There appear to be significant differences among taphonomic variables of vertebrate fossils from three selected paleontological localities in the lower Cretaceous Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation in east-central Utah. The taphonomic variables include weathering, abrasion, and fracturing. The specific sites that were studied are Doellings Bowl, Dalton Wells, and Gaston Quarry. The quarries are located on federal- and state-owned land and have well established fossil collections. This work focused on assessing whether there is an association of taphonomic variables with varying lithofacies in the Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation. Analysis of the taphonomic variables was conducted, with the focus on weathering, abrasion, fracture, and breakage conditions. Utilizing Kruskal-Wallis, chi-square, and linear trend analyses, these taphonomic characters were compared 1) between localities and 2) between element classes (ex. rod-shaped bones vs. flat bones).

Book excerpt: The Early Cretaceous (Barremian-Albian) Burro Canyon Formation in Eastern Utah and Western Colorado is a dominantly fluvial system that resembles the Cedar Mountain Formation, a correlative unit that lies across the Colorado River and is famous for recent dinosaur discoveries, The Burro Canyon Formation is arbitrarily split from the Cedar Mountain Formation using the Colorado River as a dividing line. This non-stratigraphic means of splitting one unit from the other is largely due to convention and it has become entrenched in the literature. Sections measured on Hotel Mesa and Buckhorn Mesa, both in eastern Grand County, Utah, were made in order to better delineate the contact between the two formations in this remote area on the Uncompahgre Plateau. The section on Hotel Mesa is in the Poison Strip Sandstone Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation as demonstrated by correlation to nearby established measured sections. Multiple paleocurrents were taken on Buckhorn Mesa, along with three new measured sections. These measured sections and paleoflows were then used to determine whether these rocks are likely to be in the Burro Canyon Formation or the Cedar Mountain Formation. Facies were established for the outcrops, with preliminary facies associations then being developed and outlined on photographs. Analyses show that these fluvial sandstones on this edge of the Uncompahgre Plateau are all in the Poison Strip Sandstone Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation. Also, no other Early Cretaceous sediments are found on this entire portion of the Plateau, as illustrated using panoramic photographs.

Book excerpt: The fiftieth anniversary edition of a landmark publication showcasing prehistoric North American landscapes and ecosystems, from a celebrated paleontologist at Yale University's Peabody Museum The fiftieth anniversary edition of John H. Ostrom's Stratigraphy and Paleontology of the Cloverly Formation revisits his groundbreaking work pinpointing the age of the continental sequence of the Bighorn Basin area in Wyoming and Montana. The Cloverly Formation is important for understanding the development of North American terrestrial landscapes and prehistoric ecosystems, and current investigations are reinterpreting the age of the Formation with new evidence and data. The reissue of Ostrom's original benchmark research offers contemporary relevance for researchers and students today.

Book excerpt: Taphonomic characteristics were explored and described in order to understand the relationship between preservation of vertebrate fossils and corresponding lithostratigraphic units in the upper Cedar Mountain Formation of east-central Utah. This was accomplished through collection, analysis, and interpretation of taphonomic data collected from fossil specimens and their corresponding stratigraphic units from two localities: Tonys Bone Bed (Poison Strip Sandstone Member) and Lorries Site (Ruby Ranch Member). In addition to original quarry descriptions and assemblage information, taphonomic data were collected, including weathering and abrasion, which were compared by locality and element shape in order to determine their relationship. Data regarding fracturing and breakage were also collected and analyzed in order to better understand the post-depositional conditions of bone degradation. Both localities were described and characterized by weathering traits, abrasion traits, degree of articulation, preferred long bone orientation, and corresponding lithofacies. Tonys Bone Bed is characterized by less prominent degrees of weathering and differential transport abrasion by element shape, as well as preferred long-bone orientation, and corresponds to a lake margin debris flow and pedogenically altered overbank deposit. Lorries Site is characterized by more pronounced weathering, which is differentiated based on element shape, prominent long-bone orientation, and corresponds to a crevasse splay deposit with carbonate concretionary development.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To resolve the lack of age control for the basal Cedar Mountain Formation, a geochronologic zircon study was conducted near the Dalton Wells dinosaur quarry, Moab, Utah. The Dalton Wells quarry, along with numerous other fossil assemblages occurs in the basal Yellowcat Member. Zircons from the Dalton Wells quarry and a correlative eggshell site place the age of this horizon near the Barremian/Aptian boundary at ~124 Ma. Thus, the Yellowcat fauna is time equivalent with the feathered dinosaurs of the Yixian Formation, of Liaoning, China. This age constrains the Morrison/Cedar Mountain unconformity to a period of magmatic quiescence in western North America from 148 Ma-124 Ma. The basal Cedar Mountain age coincides with renewed magmatic activity at ~125 Ma. The Cedar Mountain Formation covers a period of 27 Myr and likely contains numerous small unconformities.

Book excerpt: The Cedar Mountain Formation contains the most diverse record of Early Cretaceous dinosaurs in the western hemisphere. However, analyses of its faunas have been hindered because 1) most taxa are based on incomplete/fragmentary materials or incomplete descriptions, 2) most sites and some horizons preserve few taxa, and 3) the stratigraphy and geochronology are poorly understood.
