This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outcome of a research project on "Sustainable Forestry and the Environment in Developing Countries". The project has been run by Metsantutki muslaitos METLA -the Finnish Forest Research Institute since 1987 and will be completed this year. A major output by this project has so far been a report in three volumes on "Deforestation or development in the Third World?" The purpose of our multidisciplinary research project is to generate new knowl edge about the causes of deforestation, its scenarios and consequences. More knowledge is needed for more effective, efficient and equitable public policy, both at the national and intemationallevels in supporting sustainable forestry in develop ing countries. Our project has specifically focused on 90 tropical countries as one group and on three subgroups by continents, as well as the three case study countries, the Philippines, Ethiopia and Chile. The University of Joensuu has been our active partner in the Philippine study. We have complemented the three cases by the analyzes of Brazil and Indonesia, the two largest tropical forest-owning countries. Some other interesting country studies were annexed to complement our book both by geography and expertise. The United Nations University, World Institute for Development Economics Research, UNUIWIDER in Helsinki Finland has also been partly engaged. Most of the results from its project on "The Forest in the South and North in Context of Global Warming" will, however, be published later in a separate book.

The Handbook of Research on Sustainable Development and Governance Strategies for Economic Growth in Africa provides emerging research on the strategies required to promote growth in Africa as well as the implications and issues of the expansion of prosperity. While highlighting sustainable education, pastoral development pathways, and the public-sector role, readers will learn about the history of sustainable development and governmental approaches to improving Africa’s economy. This publication is a vital resource for policy makers, research institutions, academics, researchers, and advanced-level students seeking current research on the theories and applications of development in societal and legal institutions.
Book Synopsis Forest Conservation Policy by : V. Alaric Sample
Download or read book Forest Conservation Policy written by V. Alaric Sample and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind introduction to the major issues and controversies dominating the heated debate over U.S. forest policy today. Forest Conservation Policy: A Reference Handbook chronicles the dramatic history, current status, and global influence of U.S. forest policy. Beginning with the foundations of early forest law during the colonial period through the rise of the Conservation Movement in the wake of 19th century massive forest exploitation, this reference also discusses the environmental challenges that have rewritten recent U.S. forest policy and explores future policy directions. What are the effects of forest destruction on biological diversity? Has the sustainable forest management movement been effective? Given the fact that individual landowners control the greatest share of U.S. forestland, how are forests on private lands regulated? Students and concerned citizens alike will discover answers to these and other critical questions regarding what is left of the nation's dwindling forests.
Book Synopsis Participation in Sustainable Forest Management by : Weltbank
Download or read book Participation in Sustainable Forest Management written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This forest policy note was prepared to provide input to the ongoing forest sector reform in Kenya on participation in sustainable forest management. It offers recommendations on possible priority forest policy actions within the forthcoming Natural Resource Management (NRM) Project. The latter focuses enhancing the capacity of Kenyans to manage the natural resource base and resources available to poor and vulnerable communities. By outlining priority actions, such as improving the forest information base and establishing accountability mechanisms, while at the same time seizing the opportunities for engagement of local communities and private investors, the policy note outlines a set of actions critical for increased participation in sustainable forest management. In this respect the policy note supports the World Bank's Country Assistance Strategy (CAS) and the more recent CAS progress report. The latter emphasizes the Bank's strategy on growth and poverty reduction, but gives enhanced attention to equity and governance. The forest policy note complements previous the World Bank-supported analytical work in the forest sector since 2004, including a strategic environmental assessment of the 2005 Forests Act. Taking into account the importance of forests and woodlands in rural areas and the opportunities offered in the 2005 Forest Act for increased stakeholder participation the policy note as well as the forthcoming NRM Project are closely aligned the Bank Group's strategic emphasis on growth and poverty reduction with enhanced attention to equity and governance.
