Book excerpt: A foreman set in his ways and a hardheaded journalist with a mind of her own can’t abide by the conditions set forth in her father’s will. But they also can’t abide with the notion of being in the same country, much less the same ranch. Foreman Lewis Sutton’s been like a son to Richard Reed. Except he’s not his son. So when Richard dies and Lewis has to contact his estranged daughters to come claim the ranch that Lewis loves, he’s left with a bitter taste in his mouth. Sure that the estranged princesses from the east coast will send a lawyer to sell the property, Lewis finds himself in the unenviable position of knowing he’ll lose the only home he’s ever known. Molly Reed’s got a good life in Baltimore. She’s just taken a position that she’s been pursuing for what seems like forever. A journalist spot. She’s been trying to get that job for so long, and she’s written her heart out to get it. She can’t even use her own name. She can’t even conduct interviews. She’s had to ask her friend Cory Weston to go to the interviews and ask the questions she comes up with while she plays secretary and takes notes. Cory’s in love with her, so he’d agree to just about anything. She tells Cory she’ll be back, and she has to go settle some affairs at her father’s ranch. She doesn’t know the conditions yet. Little do either Molly or Lewis know, the conditions of the will are that Richard’s daughters must live on the ranch for a year before doing anything with it. Then there are more conditions, but the lawyer won’t tell anyone what those are until the year is up.

So when Richard dies and Lewis has to contact his estranged daughters to come claim the ranch that Lewis loves, he’s left with a bitter taste in his mouth. Molly Reed’s got a good life in Baltimore. Or maybe it was lying about the stolen wallet the saloon girl slipped her. A series of mistakes have left her in hot water with the town’s hunky sheriff, Rance Connelly. Rance knows this woman’s lying to him. He just can’t peg why. He also knows she’s not a saloon girl. Why won’t she tell him her name? Why won’t she confess to stealing the wallet? An Undercover Detective’s Bride Rachel Reed left Baltimore with a secret that none of her sisters are aware of. A secret so sinister she fears that drastic means need to be taken to protect herself and the ones she loves. She’d hoped she’d left the secret behind in Baltimore, until one fateful day a presence on the streets of Carson City brings the whole matter full circle. Mason Murphy’s on a mission to protect a witness from a group of criminals with one intent—leave no witnesses. An Inconvenient Bride Kidnapped and held for ransom, Holly Reed escapes and makes a run for it. Half Indian, half Scottish, Roan MacIntosh’s just another mountain man. One who wants to be left alone. He doesn’t want company, especially not some yappy female he saves from a blizzard. He also doesn’t need anyone. Until he’s got new set of unexpected visitors. A Bargain for a Bride Cate Reed has one ambition. One dream. One goal. A theatre in Carson City. How can they not have one? So uncivilized. This dream of hers goes against the grain of her sisters, and it seems ,of most polite society. Polite society be damned, Cate Reed’s going to get her theatre, come hell or high water. Or a man who has a bargain. Cate Reed’s made a deal with a devil. A devilishly handsome stranger named Landon Jenkins.

Not just for herself, but for the baby she’s carrying, a baby she has to save from John Carter’s cruelty. Expecting a baby has changed the stakes for Melissa. She must provide a safe and loving home for the child. Time if of the essence if she is to marry in time to convince her new husband that the baby she’ll give birth to is his. A stagecoach robbery is a deterrent she did not count on, nor need. When the robbers learn her husband is a wealthy rancher, she’s taken hostage, costing her precious time in a plan that hinges on timeliness. She hates the leader of the highwaymen. Hates him with a passion and is beyond angry that the time is ticking while he negotiates her ransom. Jed Cunningham’s a highwayman, certainly, but one with honor. And a heart, it seems. She refuses all the men’s efforts at flirtation and offers to go upstairs for a tryst. This woman’s got upper crust class and a shrew’s temper. Maybe he shouldn’t have tried to help her. Maybe he wouldn’t have been kicked out of the saloon and she wouldn’t have been fired. Now she’s his responsibility. This new turn of events is giving his ideas. Book excerpt: From the Edsel to Eisenhower, from Mau Mau to Doris Day, and from Ayn Rand to Elvis, contributors to The Other Fifties topple the decade's already weakened image as a time of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and conformity. Representing the fifties as a period of cultural transformation, contributors reveal the gradual "unmaking" of traditions and value systems that took place as American culture prepared itself for the more easily observed cultural turbulence of the 1960s. Well known contributors demonstrate how television, the novel, the Hollywood movie, the Broadway musical, and rock and roll assaulted midcentury American attitudes toward sexuality, race, gender, and class, so altering public sensibilities that what was novel or shocking in the fifties seems tame or even downright difficult to grasp today. They also rebut the widely held view that 1950s consumerism led to cultural homogeneity, replacing this view with a picture of robust popular markets that defied conservative controls and actively subverted conventional norms and values. Brushing away the haze of an era, The Other Fifties will help readers understand the decade not as placid or repressed, but as a time when emancipatory desires struggled to articulate themselves.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award “Extraordinarily moving . . . a powerfully drawn survival epic.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] one-in-a-billion story . . . designed to wrench from self-respecting critics all the blurby adjectives we normally try to avoid: It is amazing, unforgettable, gripping, harrowing, chilling, and inspiring.”—New York “Staggering . . . mesmerizing . . . [Hillenbrand] has crafted another masterful blend of sports, history and overcoming terrific odds; this is biography taken to the nth degree, a chronicle of a remarkable life lived through extraordinary times.”—The Dallas Morning News “An astonishing testament to the superhuman power of tenacity.”—Entertainment Weekly “A tale of triumph and redemption . . . astonishingly detailed.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “[A] masterfully told true story . . . nothing less than a marvel.”—Washingtonian “[Hillenbrand tells this] story with cool elegance but at a thrilling sprinter’s pace.”—Time “Hillenbrand [is] one of our best writers of narrative history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal policy toward hardrock mining remains largely unchanged since the passage of the General Mining Law of 1872. That legislation was originally intended to promote settlement and economic development of the American West. A century and a quarter later, the region no longer requires congressional coddling, yet more than half a million mines and mill sites remain abandoned throughout the western states. These sites have created 180,000 acres of polluted lakes and reservoirs and 12,000 miles of contaminated streams and rivers. Montana?s Blackfoot River, made famous by Norman Maclean?s A River Runs through It, is one such battered body of water. Not only did the 1872 law essentially give the land and minerals to miners and mining companies?and it continues to do so today?the law also required no mine reclamation or water quality protection. State mining laws likewise required little or no reclamation. Wounding the West traces the role of hardrock mining and its relationship with the American West by following the environmental history of one Montana mine, the Mike Horse, from its 1898 discovery, through its heyday in the 1940s, subsequent abandonment, and eventual cleanup under the coercion of a state law that many would consider ill-suited for abandoned mines. David Stiller argues that taxpayers should treat mining companies like the for-profit enterprises they are and insist that the hardrock mining industry pay a fair royalty for extracted minerals and then put this funding to work correcting the industry?s worst historical abuses.
