Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fool's Errand Quentin dillon was back in London again, suffering from a sense of general atness. There seemed to be no more ups and downs or tremendous moments left in life. The waves of war had receded, and the feverish exalta tions, the queerly inconsequent intricacies, and all the horror, as well as much of the zest of the past, had vanished quietly and was no longer there. If fete days ask for to-morrow, it is also true that misery, and the terrible intoxication of a long ordeal, makes its demand for some thing further, to stir the soul. Though he had once longed for a renewal of the old order of things, he did not know then that change had touched him with a strong, formative hand, and a gap wider than years alone separated the old Quentin Dillon from the man who stared out of the window of his club in Pall Mall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fool's Errand: By One of the Fools Gentlemen, - Your demand that I should write a "Preface" to the book you have printed seems to me utterly preposterous. It is like a man introducing himself, - always an awkward, and generally a useless piece of business. What is the use of the "prologue to the epic coming on," anyhow, unless it be a sort of advertisement? and in that case you ought to write it. Whoever does that should be "Wise enough to play the fool; And to do that well craves a sort of wit." That is not the kind of Fool I am. All such work I delegate to you, and hereby authorize and empower you to say what you please of what I have written, only begging you keep in mind one clear distinction. There are two kinds of Fools. The real Fool is the most sincere of mortals: the Court Fool and his kind - the trifling, jesting buffoon - but simulate the family virtue, and steal the family name, for sordid purposes. The life of the Fool proper is full of the poetry of faith. He may run after a will-o'-the-wisp, while the Wise deride; but to him it is a veritable star of hope. He differs from his fellow-mortals chiefly in this, that he sees or believes what they do not, and consequently undertakes what they never attempt. If he succeed in his endeavor, the world stops laughing, and calls him a Genius: if he fail, it laughs the more, and derides his undertaking as A Fool's Errand. So the same individual is often both fool and genius, - a fool all his life and a genius after his death, or a fool to one century and a genius to the next, or a fool at home and a prodigy abroad. Book excerpt: Subtitled "A Novel of the South During Reconstruction," this 1879 bestseller, by a participant in that great social experiment, is the barely fictionalized account of the career of a Northern lawyer in North Carolina after the Civil War. A champion of the poor and landless of any race, and a keen observer of the dilemmas facing uneducated Negroes in the postwar period, Tourge offers us an important eyewitness account of one of the most tumultuous eras of American history, one that continues to influence the course of the American experiences of race and class to this day.

Book excerpt: Robin Hobb’s most popular hero, assassin and “beast magic” master FitzChivalry Farseer, returns in this stunning trilogy—an epic of sacrifice, salvation, and untold treachery. For the first time, this convenient eBook bundle brings together all three of the Tawny Man novels: FOOL’S ERRAND GOLDEN FOOL FOOL’S FATE For fifteen years Fitz has lived in self-imposed exile, assumed to be dead by almost all who once cared about him. But now, into his isolated life, visitors begin to arrive: Fitz’s mentor from his assassin days; a hedge-witch who foresees the return of a long-lost love; and the Fool, the former White Prophet, who beckons Fitz to fulfill his destiny. Then comes the summons he cannot ignore. Prince Dutiful, the young heir to the Farseer throne, has vanished. Fitz, possessed of magical skills both royal and profane, is the only one who can retrieve him in time for his betrothal ceremony, thus sparing the Six Duchies profound political embarrassment . . . or worse. But even Fitz does not suspect the web of treachery that awaits him—or how his loyalties will be tested to the breaking point. Praise for Robin Hobb and the Tawny Man Trilogy “Fantasy as it ought to be written . . . Robin Hobb’s books are diamonds in a sea of zircons.”—George R. R. Martin “[Robin] Hobb has created a world brimming with detail and complexity [and] once again proves herself a full master of the epic fantasy.”—Tulsa World, on Fool’s Errand “Splendid . . . Despite some truly wrenching twists, there is a welcome sense of new beginnings.”—Locus, on Fool’s Errand “[Robin Hobb] ranks near the top of the high fantasy field. . . . [She] juggles all the balls with aplomb, besides providing spot-on characterizations.”—Publishers Weekly, on Golden Fool “Solid storytelling with warmth and heart.”—The Kansas City Star, on Golden Fool “[Robin] Hobb’s rich, vibrant and unique world [is] filled with sentient ships, magical beasts, and fascinating characters. . . . Highly recommended.”—Library Journal, on Fool’s Fate “Rich, enchanting fantasy from one of today’s best practitioners . . . reminiscent of Ursula Le Guin’s The Other Wind [and] Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series.”—BookPage, on Fool’s Fate

The Red Wraith is born.Cast into exile by his tribe for being spawn of human and spirit, Naysin is lost in a world of change as pale men from the sea arrive to plunder the riches of the New World. Guided only by the devious facets of his spirit father, Naysin has no choice but to master his powers to survive the destruction of his people. But the nature of those talents is both light and dark. And so the legend of the Red Wraith begins. On the island of Bimshire, Naysin inspires a slave rebellion before abandoning it; near his former home, he marches European settlers to their deaths; and in the forests of Edgeland, he ends a battle by massacring both sides. Such acts cause much of the New World to see him as an indigenous monster who delights in butchering white innocents. The infamy is well-earned, but when Naysin encounters a group of fellow magic-users, he realizes he may yet have a chance to set things right. He just has to conquer the only thing that ensures his survival: the dual facets of his father.
